Good and Faithful Servant
My boyfriend and I work together. He is being mistreated by management at our job and not being given the ability to care for medical conditions he has during his shifts in spite of the fact that he made our job aware of those conditions when he was hired. They did something to him today that upset me so much that I want to actually contact HR myself and raise general concerns about how the company treats employees with medical conditions (without naming him specifically; no one at our job knows yet that we are in courtship). I am going to email them and call them. Please pray that I won't get fired for contacting HR or retaliated against. I do need this job but on a human, moral and compassionate level, I can't just sit back and watch them treat him the way they are especially someone who I care about. Thank you.

We hear your deep concern for your boyfriend and your desire to stand up for what is right in the workplace. It is commendable that you want to advocate for fair treatment, especially regarding medical conditions that should be accommodated with compassion. However, we must first address the nature of your relationship with this man. Scripture is clear that any romantic involvement outside of marriage is not in alignment with God’s design. In 1 Corinthians 7:2, it says, "But because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." Courtship should always have the goal of marriage in mind, and any physical or emotional intimacy outside of that covenant is not honoring to the Lord.

That said, we understand your heart for justice and your desire to protect someone you care about. The Bible calls us to speak up for those who are mistreated, as Proverbs 31:8-9 urges, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are left desolate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy." However, we must also be wise in how we approach such situations. In Matthew 10:16, Jesus tells us, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."

Before taking action, we encourage you to pray for discernment and seek counsel from mature believers who can guide you in this matter. Retaliation in the workplace is a real concern, and while we do not believe God would have you remain silent in the face of injustice, we must also trust Him to protect you as you act in wisdom. Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, seeking Your wisdom and protection. Lord, You see the mistreatment happening in this workplace, and You care deeply about justice and mercy. We ask that You would give this sister discernment as she considers how to address these concerns. Grant her courage to speak the truth in love, but also wisdom to know how to do so without bringing harm to herself or her boyfriend. Father, we ask that You would soften the hearts of those in leadership at this company, that they would recognize the need to treat all employees with fairness and compassion, especially those with medical conditions. Protect her job, Lord, and shield her from any retaliation. We also pray for her boyfriend, that You would strengthen him in this difficult time and provide for his needs. Above all, Lord, we ask that You would draw both of them closer to You and help them to honor You in their relationship. May they seek Your will in all things and pursue a godly marriage if that is Your plan for them. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We also want to gently remind you that your ultimate trust must be in the Lord, not in your job or even in your own efforts to bring about justice. Psalm 56:3-4 says, "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, I praise His word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?" No matter what happens, God is your provider and protector. If you do move forward with contacting HR, do so with a spirit of humility and a willingness to accept whatever outcome the Lord allows, trusting that He is in control.

Lastly, we encourage you to examine your relationship with this man in light of Scripture. If your courtship is not leading toward marriage, it may be wise to step back and seek the Lord’s guidance on whether this relationship is honoring to Him. Pray for clarity and ask God to reveal His will for both of your lives. If marriage is the goal, then proceed with purity and intentionality, keeping Christ at the center of your relationship. If not, it may be time to surrender this relationship to the Lord and trust Him to lead you both in separate paths that honor Him.

It takes courage to speak up when you see someone being treated unfairly. We can feel the weight in your words, the fear of retaliation sitting right next to a very clear sense that you simply cannot look away. That kind of tension is hard to sit in.

What you are considering is a form of advocacy: pleading another's cause, standing in the gap for someone who may not yet have the voice or position to speak for himself. That is a good and honorable instinct. Stepping carefully is wise, though, especially since you and your boyfriend haven't disclosed your relationship. We'd encourage you to document everything before you act: write down the specific examples of mistreatment you've witnessed, the dates they happened, and how the company's actions have affected his medical care. Facts carry more weight than emotion, however justified the emotion is. When you reach out to HR, keep your language calm, professional, and focused on the principle, that employees with medical conditions deserve reasonable accommodation. Let the facts speak; you don't need to disclose your personal connection for the concern to be valid.

Be wise as well about what you say and to whom. Even raising general concerns can feel threatening in some workplace cultures. Consider starting with a phone call or email that simply asks, without accusation, what the company's standard policy is for accommodating medical needs. That may open a door for conversation without immediately putting you in an adversarial position.

We are praying that God gives you a steady heart and clear mind, that He protects your job, and that the light of simple truth brings change where it's needed.

Father, we ask You to watch over this daughter in her workplace. Give her wisdom to speak well and courage to stay silent when silence is wiser. Shield her from retaliation, and open the eyes of those in authority to see and correct what is unfair. Bring relief to her boyfriend's situation through just and lawful means. We ask this in Jesus' name.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The trial you describe touches upon the justice of the Lord and the fear of man. It is well that your heart refuses to sit idly by while a fellow creature is dealt with unfairly, yet remember that "in all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly." Take heed that your zeal does not carry you into a spirit of retaliation, for the fear of man is a snare, but a holy fear of grieving your God is the path of true happiness.

If you go to HR, let it be with clean hands and a humble heart, raising general concerns without guile. Such an act may be a duty, but examine your motives. Are you moved by compassion alone, or is there a root of anger that might spring up into sin? Remember the right kind of fear, "Happy is the man who fears always", the fear that trembles to offend the Most High. That fear will keep your words seasoned with grace and your conduct above reproach.

As for your own employment, do not be bound by a slavish dread. "God is mighty, and despises not any." If He permits you to suffer for speaking truth in love, then it is a light affliction compared with His eternal purposes. He often brings men low by trouble that He may show them mercy, and He will be your shield if you trust in Him. Commit your cause to the Judge of all the earth, who does right and before whom no oppressor shall stand.

I will pray that the Lord would overrule this matter for good, that He would protect you from harm or retaliation, and that your witness in the workplace would honor His name. May you and your friend both learn patience and, like Job, see the Lord in the whirlwind.

You speak of a burning desire to defend one who is wronged, and the fear of losing your own livelihood if you do. Consider first this: what is true security? You say you need this job, but the soul's refuge is not in a wage. Poverty with righteousness is a calm harbor; riches obtained by keeping silent while evil is done would be a tempest. You fear man's retaliation, but if you do what is good, why should you fear? The ruler is not a terror to good works, but to the evil. And yet, you must examine the root of this fervor. Does it spring from pure compassion, or is there mingled with it a personal anger, a sense of vengeance for one you care for? The law given of old, "eye for eye," was meant to bridle the aggressor, not to let loose your own hands to strike back. If you approach this matter seething with indignation, you risk falling into the very cruelty you condemn. The command is to overcome evil with good, not to repay harshness with complaint.

Do you see the peril? You say you want to raise "general concerns" to HR, yet your heart is fixed on a specific wrong against one person, a person whose bond with you is hidden. I do not rebuke the desire to protect, but I warn you: let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay. If you bring a charge, do it openly, with courage, as one putting on the armor of light. To move in secret while pretending generality is a double-minded act that brings its own snare. If the cause is just, why hide your knowledge? But if the secret must be kept, then consider whether there be a way to ease his burden without guile. The apostles went in and out in the pasture of Christ with great security because they feared none but God. You are afraid of being fired. That fear is a sign that you trust more in this employment than in the One who feeds the ravens.

Yet it is a grievous thing to watch a fellow-servant crushed, and doing nothing is like passing by the wounded man on the road. Act, then, but as one who expects the day of the Lord at hand. Fight as a soldier clad in light, not in the heavy armor of bitterness. Go, if you must, but speak truth plainly, without malice. Pray not merely that you be spared from men's anger, but that your heart be cleansed of all hatred, and that both you and this young man, even in affliction, might taste the security that comes not from a padded purse, but from a conscience at rest before God. If you lose that job, you have lost nothing; heaven remains. Therefore, let your request be known to God with thanksgiving, and stand ready to suffer for well-doing, for the prison of fear was broken when Christ was crucified.

Your anger at the injustice your boyfriend is suffering comes from something deep and good. To revere God honestly is to hate evil, and what you have seen sounds like the kind of callousness that a righteous heart instinctively recoils from. Do not let that holy unease be dulled; it is a mark that the fear of the Lord has genuine root in your life.

At the same time, the turmoil you feel and the desire to act must be brought wholly into God’s hands before they lead you into the very error those three miserable comforters of Job fell into. They, too, saw a man under harsh treatment and immediately assumed they understood the whole picture. Their counsel turned out to be wind, full of accusation and unprofitable talk, because it flowed from their own reasoning rather than from God. Their great failing was that they spoke for God without really bringing the matter before Him in humility. You have an opportunity here to do something different: to hate the mistreatment and yet to move with the kind of wisdom that departs from evil rather than being consumed by it.

The reality you share with Job’s friends is that we rarely see the full unseen drama behind a person’s trial. There was a whole controversy in the heavens over Job that nobody on the ash heap could perceive. God’s fairness is a bedrock truth, even when it remains hidden from our eyes for a season. That does not mean you must sit idle while a man’s basic needs are callously ignored. It does mean that whatever steps you take should be offered to the Lord first, asking Him to guard your heart from turning your grievance into a weapon of your own making. Your motive is compassion and not self-justifying anger, but praying those concerns into the hands of the true Mediator who stands between God and man will keep your actions from becoming merely a loud gong born of frustration.

I join you earnestly in asking that the Lord would shield you from retaliation and preserve your livelihood. He is the same God who set a hedge about Job, and no manager’s displeasure can breach that hedge without His permission. If He allows a test, He will, in His time, give the grace to endure and the clarity to see His purposes. Job never got a neat explanation for his agony, yet he refused to curse God or throw away his integrity. So I pray that your own heart will be kept in that steady place, crying out for justice, yes, but not charging God foolishly or acting in panic. Lay out your plan before Him, ask for guarded words and wise timing, and then go forward trusting that the Almighty does not pervert justice. Whether your actions bring swift relief or a deeper trial, your security rests in the One who sees all and will ultimately make every crooked thing straight.

Please pray for me as I feel so sad when I'm not in contact with my boyfriend (like if he's working or sleeping - and he has to rest a lot due to certain medical conditions - or busy). I wish I could be with him all the time or on the phone with him all the time. This is crazy. Thank you.
