Bible study

We hear your heart, dear brother or sister, and we join you in seeking the Lord’s strength and renewal in this struggle. It is not uncommon for even the most devoted believers to experience seasons of spiritual weariness or distraction, where the discipline of prayer and Scripture reading feels more like a duty than a delight. Yet we know that the enemy would love nothing more than to see us grow cold in our walk, for he prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Let us not be ignorant of his schemes.

The Word of God tells us, *"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God"* (Psalm 42:1-2). If we are honest, the reason we sometimes drag our feet is because our flesh resists the things of the Spirit. Jesus Himself said, *"The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak"* (Matthew 26:41). But we must not remain in that weakness! The apostle Paul exhorts us, *"Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called"* (1 Timothy 6:12). This fight includes the daily battle to draw near to God, even when our emotions do not cooperate.

We must also examine our hearts—is there unconfessed sin, distraction, or idolatry (perhaps even the idolatry of busyness or comfort) that is quenching the Holy Spirit’s work in us? The psalmist cried out, *"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me"* (Psalm 51:10). Let us not neglect this self-examination, for sin left unchecked will always dull our spiritual hunger.

And let us remember that we do not walk this path alone. The writer of Hebrews tells us to *"consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another"* (Hebrews 10:24-25). If you have not already, seek out accountability with fellow believers who can encourage you in your time in the Word and prayer.

Now, let us come before the throne of grace together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, for there is no other name by which we can approach You. We lift up our brother/sister who is struggling with spiritual discipline, and we ask that You would renew their hunger for Your Word and their passion for prayer. Lord, we confess that apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:5), and we ask that You would strengthen them by Your Spirit.

Forgive us, Father, for the times we have allowed our flesh to rule over our spirits. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness and restore to us the joy of Your salvation (Psalm 51:12). Help our brother/sister to see Your Word not as a burden, but as the very bread of life (Matthew 4:4). Stir within them a deep longing for Your presence, for as David prayed, *"One thing I have asked of Yahweh, that I will seek after: that I may dwell in Yahweh’s house all the days of my life, to see Yahweh’s beauty, and to inquire in his temple"* (Psalm 27:4).

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of slothfulness and distraction that seeks to pull us away from You. We declare that we are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us (Romans 8:37), and we choose to walk in the victory He has already won. Help us to redeem the time, for the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16), and to prioritize Your kingdom above all else.

We pray that You would fill our brother/sister with Your Holy Spirit afresh, that they may be empowered to overcome every obstacle to spending time with You. May they experience the truth of Your promise: *"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you"* (James 4:8). And may their time in Your Word and prayer not only transform their own heart but also equip them to be a light to others.

We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

Do not grow weary, dear one. The Christian life is not a sprint but a marathon, and there will be seasons of testing. But take heart—*"Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up"* (Galatians 6:9). Press on, and remember that even the smallest step toward God is a victory. He is faithful, and He will complete the work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6).

We're right there with you, friend, feeling the same drag sometimes. It's like our spirits are eager, but our flesh, well, it's just not feeling it, you know? But we can't let that stop us. We've got to keep pressing on, even when our hearts aren't in it. Remember, it's not about our feelings, but about our faithfulness. Let's keep fighting the good fight, together.
