You speak rightly to call these afflictions light and to see them as grooming you in patience and obedience. Hold fast to that, but take care: leave the full weight of your financial needs and your healing entirely in God’s hands. For when you carry the care of them too closely, you do so as a mere man; but if you surrender them completely and seek first the greater things, then God Himself provides as God. Do not let this waiting strangle your pursuit of closeness with Him. If, while you wait for money and health, your soul grows anxious and you let go of spiritual diligence, you tie the Lord’s hands. He will not make much provision for the things you clutch so tightly.

You are not a monastic alone in the desert. The command to watch in all perseverance and to make no provision for the flesh was spoken to every soul in the city, whether married or single. The trial of your finances and your body is the very furnace where patience is forged. Patience, in turn, produces proven character, and character produces a hope that does not put to shame. You are being trained to endure as Christ endured, who for your sake allowed a slave to be called His father, that He might make the Lord your own Father. So this is no small thing: your light affliction is working for you an eternal weight of glory.

Let no one tell you that these trials are beneath God’s notice. The God of patience and consolation is using them to grant you to be like-minded with Christ Jesus. And if at times the waiting seems long and the provision scanty, remember that to be hungry a little while is nothing compared to the undying torment from which He saves you. Count up the benefits: you learn obedience, you receive the great reward of patience, and by your steadfastness you show regard for the One who suffered for you. All this redounds not to your credit but to the glory of God, that the grace multiplied through your need might cause thanksgiving to overflow. Therefore, keep glorying in Jesus your Lord and in Abba the Father. Let your patient hope invite His full provision, and do not exchange the spiritual riches of this grooming for the world’s fleeting ease. Amen.

The trust you are expressing is exactly the posture that pleases God. You believe these light afflictions are grooming patience, perseverance, and obedience in you, and that is true. Scripture makes it plain that faith and patience are the two things necessary to inherit the promises of God. Faith reaches out and grasps that He is able to do what He has promised. Patience rests in the fact that He does not always answer the moment we ask. When we introduce God into the equation, we have to eliminate the word impossible, because nothing is impossible with Him. But His timing works outside our limited dimension, so waiting upon Him takes great faith. You are learning to trust that He is in control and that He is working, even when you cannot see it.

Consider how patient God is. He is the God of patience, long-suffering in working out His purposes. He was patient with Abraham as year after year passed before the promised son arrived. He is patient with you in ways far beyond what you can imagine. The very afflictions that test you are being used by Him to develop that same patience deep within your soul. This is not a legal arrangement where you earn His response by making promises to pray more or by bargaining for blessings. That kind of transactional thinking misses the heart of what God wants. His desire is not a relationship based on your performance or obedience to a set of rules. He wants a loving relationship, an intimate communion where you cry out to Him as your Father. The Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are His child.

In that communion, He gently teaches you to listen more and to speak less. When the waiting stretches long, the temptation is to murmur against His provisions, but murmuring only reveals an impatient heart. You see, you are learning something vital here. The Lord often allows these tests because patience is foundational to your whole walk with Him. How many problems are created because we will not simply wait? Abraham ran ahead and created trouble by not waiting on God’s timing for a son. But your declaration of glory and honor to Jesus and to the Father shows a heart that is not cursing the delay but is, instead, being established in hope. You are finding that your relationship with God is now based on faith in Christ, not on an impossible attempt to reach an infinite being by your own finite strength.

As you wait for financial provision, healing, and that deeper closeness, remember that the God of patience and consolation is also the God of peace. He receives your joyful trust even in the middle of the affliction. Let that peace rule in your heart while you continue with this glad disposition, because He is faithfully finishing the work He started in you. The husbandman is simply waiting for the complete fruit of harvest, and He has great patience for it. Rest in His promises.
