Autistic & sick

My son has the flu & he's been up all night. Went to his Dad's room & threw on the light at 4, woke him up & started screaming to go shopping. His Dad had to get up then & leave for work to avoid being screamed at forever. Autism is just so hard, it's always something.

We hear your exhaustion and your heart in this and we are lifting you up together before the Lord. Caring for a sick child through a sleepless night while also navigating the unique challenges of autism is deeply draining, and we want you to know that God sees every moment, every interrupted hour of sleep, and every act of love you give even when you are running on empty.

We are reminded that your son is fearfully and wonderfully made and that children are a gift from the Lord. Psalm 127:3 says Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward. His autism does not diminish his value in God's eyes, and your faithful care for him, even in the hardest moments like being woken at 4 in the morning and facing screaming when you are sick and tired yourselves, is precious to the Father. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up. God knows you are weary and He does not expect you to carry this in your own strength.

The Lord invites you to bring this weariness directly to Him. Matthew 11:28 says Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. And Psalm 46:1 reminds us God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When your heart feels overwhelmed from the broken sleep and the constant demands, you can cry out as in Psalm 61:2, From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. He also promises in Isaiah 41:10 Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share why we always pray in His name. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus we come before You and lift up this precious family to You. We ask for Your healing touch upon this little boy, that You would ease his flu symptoms, bring down any fever, calm his body, and grant him peaceful and restorative sleep. We pray You would calm his mind and help him to feel safe and comforted when he is sick and overwhelmed, and give him words or peace instead of distress. Lord, we lift up his mother and father who are exhausted from being up all night. We ask You to strengthen them, to give them supernatural patience and grace in the difficult moments, and to provide rest for their bodies even in small windows. We pray for his dad as he has gone to work without proper sleep, that You would sustain him through the day and guard his safety. We ask for Your peace to fill their home, as Philippians 4:6-7 promises, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Remind them that Your grace is sufficient and Your power is made perfect in weakness as You say in 2 Corinthians 12:9, and that Your mercies are new every morning as Lamentations 3:22-23 declares. Help them to lean on You and on each other, and to find support and encouragement in Your body, the church. We ask all of this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to keep casting every care on Him, to take moments to breathe and pray even for a minute when the screaming feels endless, and to allow each other grace on the sleepless days. The Lord is with you in this always something season, and He will not leave you to walk through it alone.

We can imagine how depleted you feel after being up all night with a sick little boy, then having that 4 a.m. wake up and screaming. When he is ill and also autistic, everything is amplified and there is no simple way to soothe him or explain why he cannot go shopping right then. It makes sense that his dad needed to leave for work early just to get a break from the intensity, and that you are left feeling like it is always something.

Caring around the clock like this, especially with broken sleep, wears down anyone. Please try to give yourselves grace today and not expect to function at full capacity.

If you can, see if you and your husband can trade a short protected rest window today, even an hour or two each, or ask a trusted family member or friend to sit with him so you can nap. Keep watching his flu symptoms and stay in touch with his pediatrician alongside prayer if fever or other symptoms worsen or linger.

Father, we lift this mom and dad and their son to You. You see this tired family and love this boy deeply. Give them rest where possible, wisdom for the next hours, and comfort for their son as he recovers. Sustain them with Your nearness today. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is a weariness that only those who watch through the night can fully know, when the body is spent and the spirit is faint, and your sorrow has been laid very tenderly before the Lord.

Human strength, even at its best, will spend itself in due time. Though a man had the strength of a lion and an ox combined, he would one day fail, for all strength apart from God is derived strength and must come to an end. You have felt this in these broken nights, with a sick child restless with fever, and the trial that autism brings, which is indeed always something. It is not to your shame that you feel weak, for we have no strength of our own, but have need of strength from above.

Hear then the promise which is meant to meet such weakness, As thy days, so shall thy strength be. The Lord does not give strength to lay by for tomorrow, but strength enough to bear your sufferings and to do your duty this day. A day of little service, little strength, a day of little suffering, little strength, but in a tremendous day, a day that needs you to play the Samson, you shall have Samson's strength. He gives strength just where the strength is needed, and of that peculiar kind which the trial demands. When there remains no strength in you, nor any ability of any kind or sort, then fling yourself upon the Divine strength and lay hold upon it.

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. To wait upon Him is to look to Him, to trust Him, to cry to Him in the moment when the leap seems too wide. Whenever you feel that you have something to do that is beyond you, stop a moment and breathe a prayer for more strength. He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might He increases strength. The glory of your strength, dear soul, lies not in yourself, not in unbroken sleep or in quiet days, but in God alone, who is the Author of all strength and who has promised, I will strengthen them.

You have heard of the patience of Job, and you are called now to a like patience. It was not the patience of one who did not feel, but the patience of a tried man, imperfect and full of infirmity, yet upheld. Job could not have exhibited patience if he had not endured trial, and the Lord who tried him also sustained him. In some, this strength from God takes the form of great patience. They have been severely tried, but they are not overcome. They have been cast down, but they have not been destroyed. So may it be with you. This patience is not the patience of a brute that cannot complain, but the patience of a child who believes in his Father's love, and it is wrought in us as we feed upon the Scriptures in meditation and prayer.

The joy of the Lord is your strength also. Not a light mirth, but that inward quiet which comes from knowing that Christ died for the ungodly, even when we were yet without strength. You need not first gather strength to come to Him, but come without strength and lay hold upon His.

I will pray for you, that the Lord will lay His healing hand upon your son and give him relief from this fever, that He will grant you and his father renewed strength for each day as it comes, and that He will give you that patient endurance which He so graciously supplies to those who wait upon Him. May He keep your home in peace, and make His own strength perfect in your weakness.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
