Argument with mother

You ask prayer that your ### may understand your suffering and apologize, so that you may forgive her. But hear the Lord’s own word: “Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God? For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and thy mother.” This honor is not a reward for their goodness; it is owed to the very office they hold by God’s ordering. When His own mother presumed upon her earthly claim, He answered with a seeming sharpness to draw her higher, not to indulge her. Are you sure that your suffering is not mixed with vainglory or a hidden love of being esteemed right? For every conflict springs from these worldly roots: envy, covetousness, the itch for human honor. Cut out the root, and the fruit of strife withers.

Do not make your forgiveness wait on her apology. That is to bargain where God gives freely. Ask instead for a contrite and humbled heart, this is His true gift, far better than any human vindication. For where blessedness is, all shame is removed. The blessed man is not the one who receives an apology, but the one whose own iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Kindle no conflict, but wait in quiet humility; if you must stand, stand nobly for your own soul’s sake. God often enhances the struggle at the end for a greater crown. Therefore, do not pray merely that her heart be changed, but let the Holy Spirit first wound you with holy compunction. A father weeps for his children not with anger but with a burning love; learn to bear this trial as such a father, grieving for the breach itself, not demanding payment for hurt. Then the peace that passes all understanding will be yours, and your ### may be won without a single word of reproach.

It is right to bring this broken relationship before the Lord. The wounds between a mother and child are some of the deepest we carry, and it is not sinful to want her to understand what her actions have done to you. But your own healing cannot wait on her apology. If forgiveness is held back until she sees and says what she did, she will still keep a hold on your heart. Jesus forgave while He was being wronged, and Scripture calls us to forgive one another as God in Christ forgave us. That means you may have to release her to God before she ever makes it right.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten her heart, yes. Ask God to bring her to true confession, because confession is the only path to cleansing. But ask the same Spirit to search you as well. Not because the fault is equal, but because resentment can grow even in a person who was truly sinned against, and that root will defile you. Forgiving her does not mean saying the harm was acceptable, and it does not mean you must pretend trust was never broken. It means you are giving up the right to hold the debt against her.

The Scriptures command children to honor their parents, yet they also tell the truth that mothers and fathers can fail their children. The tongue can make wounds that are hard to see but very real. Some parents leave a child to himself in the name of love and later reap sorrow and shame. You are not required to deny that harm. You are required to refuse revenge, to do good where you can, and to keep your own heart clear before God. If trust is not safe right now, you can still love her from a distance and leave room for God to work.

Ask God for the will to forgive, not just the feeling. The capacity comes from Christ, not from your mother finally doing what you wish. Then pray for her for her own soul's sake, because she needs the Lord's correction and mercy as much as you do. Your peace cannot rest on her changing. It rests on the One who reconciles us to Himself.

Father, I bring you and your mother before You. Heal what has been torn. Give understanding where there has been blindness, repentance where there has been sin, and release where there has been bitterness. Grant the power to forgive from the heart and to show the same mercy we have received. In Jesus' name.
