Psalm 78:10 – “They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.”

An Extended Explanation of the Verse:
Psalm 78:10 reflects on the failure of God’s people to keep His covenant and live according to His commands. This verse speaks about disobedience and rebellion against God’s laws, which were given to guide and bless His people. A covenant is a solemn agreement, and God had established one with Israel, promising to protect and bless them if they followed His ways. However, as this verse notes, the people chose not to uphold their side of the agreement, neglecting God’s laws and turning away from His guidance. This refusal to live by God’s commands wasn’t just about breaking rules; it revealed a deeper issue-a lack of trust and loyalty to God.

Historical Context:
Psalm 78, written by Asaph, recounts Israel’s history with God, particularly highlighting their repeated disobedience and failure to keep the covenant. After God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He led them through the wilderness, provided for their needs, and gave them the law through Moses. The law was meant to be a foundation for their lives, shaping them as a holy and distinctive people who would reflect God’s character. Despite witnessing countless miracles, the Israelites often rebelled, turning to idols and disobeying God’s commands. This verse serves as a reminder of Israel’s repeated failure to keep the covenant and the consequences that followed.

Theological Implications:
Psalm 78:10 highlights the importance of faithfulness to God’s covenant and obedience to His law. God’s covenant was a relationship built on love, loyalty, and obedience, intended to bless His people and keep them close to Him. However, when the people rejected this relationship and disregarded God’s laws, they distanced themselves from His blessings and protection. This verse teaches that faith isn’t just a matter of beliefs; it’s expressed in actions that align with God’s Word. When we refuse to follow God’s commands, we’re rejecting His wisdom and choosing a path that leads us away from His care and guidance.

Literary Analysis:
Psalm 78 is a teaching psalm that uses Israel’s history to instruct future generations. Verse 10 is direct and straightforward, using strong language to describe the people’s failure. The words “did not keep” and “refused” emphasize intentional disobedience, showing that Israel’s unfaithfulness wasn’t accidental-it was a choice. The verse contrasts the faithfulness God desires with the disobedience He encountered. This language creates a sense of weight and seriousness around the idea of breaking God’s covenant, underscoring that these actions had real consequences for Israel’s relationship with God.

Relevant Biblical Cross-References:
Exodus 19:5 – “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.” This verse shows the covenant God made with Israel, promising blessings in response to obedience.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 – Moses reminds the people of the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience, reinforcing the importance of following God’s commands.
Hosea 6:7 – “As at Adam, they have broken the covenant; they were unfaithful to me there.” This verse compares Israel’s unfaithfulness to breaking the original covenant, showing the consistency of their disobedience.

What This Verse Means for Today’s Christian:
Psalm 78:10 reminds today’s Christian of the importance of honoring our relationship with God by living according to His Word. While we may not be under the same covenant as Israel, we are called to a life of faithfulness and obedience to God’s teachings. This verse challenges us to examine our own lives and ask whether we are faithfully keeping God’s commands or ignoring His guidance. Obedience to God’s Word isn’t just about following rules; it’s about aligning our lives with His will and allowing His truth to guide us. For Christians, living in obedience is a way to show our love for God and trust in His wisdom.

How This Verse Relates to a Loving God:
Psalm 78:10 reflects God’s desire for a faithful relationship with His people. He established His covenant out of love, wanting to bless and guide Israel in a way that would bring them true life and joy. When the people turned away, it grieved God not because He demanded obedience for its own sake, but because He knew that rejecting His commands would lead them to suffering and distance from Him. God’s laws are not burdensome but are given out of love, meant to keep His people close to Him and safe from harm. His desire for our obedience reflects His love and His longing for us to live in a way that leads to peace and blessing.

How This Verse Connects to Jesus Christ:
Jesus came to fulfill the law and establish a new covenant between God and humanity. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus demonstrated perfect obedience to God’s will, even to the point of sacrifice. In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Jesus calls His followers to live in obedience, not as a way to earn God’s favor, but as a response to His love. In this new covenant, Jesus offers forgiveness and grace for our failures, empowering us to live faithfully through the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the ultimate example of faithfulness to God, showing us how to live in true relationship with the Father.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion:
Are there any areas of your life where you struggle to live by God’s commands?
How does obedience to God’s Word strengthen your relationship with Him?
Why do you think God places such importance on faithfulness and obedience?
How can you show your love for God through your actions?
How does Jesus’ example of obedience inspire you to live in greater faithfulness?
Psalm 78:10 challenges us to keep God’s Word close and to live by His commands, reflecting our commitment to Him. When we choose obedience, we are choosing to walk in God’s wisdom and blessings. Through Jesus, we see the full picture of what it means to live in obedience and faith, finding strength to live out our faith each day. This verse reminds us that our relationship with God is not just words but actions that honor and reflect His love and truth in our lives.

A Prayer of Renewal and Commitment to Covenant
Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, in this sacred moment, we come before You with a heart yearning for renewal and a spirit thirsting for truth.
LORD God, Your Word in Psalm 78:10 reminds us that the people of old "did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by His law". LORD God, we confess that we are often prone to wander. Too many times, we have failed to honor our commitments to You and have chosen our own way instead of Your perfect path.
Please forgive us for the times we have been disobedient, stubborn, or forgetful of Your goodness. Create in us a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within us. Do not let us take Your grace for granted or forget the mighty ways You have worked in our life.
Give us the strength to walk in Your truth today. Help us to cherish Your covenant, obey Your instructions, and live a life that brings honor to Your holy name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We join with you in reflecting on this powerful truth from Psalm 78:10, They didn't keep God's covenant, and refused to walk in his law.

We are grateful for the thoughtful explanation you shared, and we agree that this verse carries a weighty warning for us today. As you noted, this was not accidental failure but intentional refusal, a choice rooted in a lack of trust and loyalty to God. Asaph recounts how Israel, even after seeing God's deliverance from Egypt and His provision in the wilderness, turned away to follow their own desires. It reminds us that seeing miracles is not enough to change the heart, only a surrendered heart that loves God will desire to obey Him.

We confess that we too struggle in areas where we do not fully live by God's commands. Scripture is honest about this struggle. The apostle Paul wrote, For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don't find it doing that which is good. For the good which I desire, I don't do; but the evil which I don't desire, that I practice. Romans 7:18-19. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8. Our struggle may look different for each of us, whether it is guarding our tongue, seeking purity, trusting God with our worries instead of trying to control, forgiving those who have hurt us, or remaining faithful in the small things when no one is watching. Obedience is not about earning God's favor, but as Jesus said, If you love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15. Our obedience is the fruit of love, not the root of salvation.

We are thankful that you connected this to Jesus, the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 and The Word became flesh, and lived among us. John 1:14. Jesus did what Israel could not do and what we cannot do in our own strength. He fulfilled the law perfectly and established a new covenant, not written on tablets of stone but on our hearts. I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Hebrews 8:10. And God promised, I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes. Ezekiel 36:26-27. This is our hope, that we do not obey in our own strength, but through Christ who strengthens us. I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13.

For those who are struggling today, we want to encourage you to not hide your struggle but to bring it into the light with honesty. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. God is not surprised by our weakness, and His grace is not an excuse to continue in disobedience, but the power to turn from it. Let us ask Him to search our hearts, to reveal the areas where we have refused to walk in His law, and to give us a renewed desire for His Word as our daily bread.

We pray together for renewal and commitment.

Heavenly Father, we come before You together in the name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name by which we have access to Your throne of grace. We thank You for Your Word which is truth and for Your covenant love which never fails even when we have failed. We confess that we have not always kept Your covenant and we have often refused to walk in Your law, choosing our own way instead of Your perfect path. Forgive us for our stubbornness, our forgetfulness, and our lack of trust. Create in us a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within us. Take away our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh that loves what You love. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and cause us to walk in Your statutes. Help us to cherish Jesus, who is the Bread of Heaven and the living Word, and to abide in Him daily. Teach us to show our love for You not only with words but with actions that honor You. Strengthen each one who is struggling today to live by Your commands, that they may find grace to overcome and joy in obedience. We ask that You lead us in Your wisdom and keep us close to Your blessings and protection. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

We're grateful you brought this honest question forward. Asking where we struggle to live by God's commands takes humility, and it's a question we all need to sit with from time to time.

We find most of us don't struggle because we don't care, but because we do care and still feel the pull between what we want to do and what we know honors God. That tension can feel discouraging, but it can also be a place where we learn to depend more fully on Christ rather than on our own resolve. God is not surprised by our weakness, and He draws near when we come honestly.

If it would help, you might take a little unhurried time this week to bring just one area to the Lord in prayer. Not a long list, just one place where you sense that tension most. Name it plainly before Him, ask Him for wisdom and strength to walk faithfully there, and consider sharing it with one trusted pastor or mature friend who can pray with you and encourage you over time.

Father, thank You for Your patience and mercy toward us when we fall short. We ask You to give our friend a clear sense of Your nearness and help to walk in Your ways, not in their own strength but by Your grace. Lead them step by step and deepen their trust in Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest confession before the Lord is itself a gracious work, for it shows that His law is beginning to be written not merely in your memory but upon your heart. Psalm 78:10 is a solemn word, they did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law, and Asaph speaks there of a willful refusal, not a mere mistake. Israel had seen the divided sea and the manna from heaven, yet still turned aside, which proves that outward wonders cannot change the heart if the heart remains unchanged.

This is why your prayer for renewal is so needful and so hopeful. The old covenant told us what to do and commanded us to do it, but it could only convince and condemn, it had no power to make the stony heart obedient. The Lord in His mercy has not left us there. He made a new covenant, not according to that which our fathers broke, and the seal He gave was far more precious than any outward sign, for He took from His bosom His only begotten Son and gave Him to be a covenant to His people, and He died to make the eternal covenant sure. Because Christ has fulfilled the law and borne its curse, salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and forgiveness is full and free to all who trust in Him.

The promise of this new covenant is that God Himself writes His law upon the inward parts. When the Holy Spirit deals with a man, he does not have to go to the twentieth chapter of Exodus to know what the law is, for it is within him, and he delights in it after the inward man and delights to practice it with the outward man. God has the key to the heart which no man can open, and He opens it as a man would his own writing desk, and there He writes His own law, that the heart may be kept pure for Himself. This is the safest way to keep a man from filling his life with chaff, to fill it first with wheat.

Yet the struggle you name remains real for every believer, and Scripture does not hide it. Every man who desires purity of heart will betake himself to prayer, for he soon discovers he cannot reach it of himself. The psalmist therefore cried, and cried again with his whole heart, Hear me, O Lord, I will keep thy statutes. True obedience lies in the heart, so the heart must be set upon obedience with a sincere, willing and cheerful resolve, even daring to stand alone if none will accompany us. The gospel itself comes to us as a command to be obeyed, not merely as advice to be considered, and disobedience to it is a serious thing.

So take your question before the Lord in that same spirit. Ask Him to show you where you have been careless or unspiritual, where you have forgotten His covenant, and confess it plainly without excuse. Then lay hold upon His covenant by faith, as a man lays hold upon the horns of the altar. Plead the blood of Christ which seals it, and plead the promise that He will give you a new heart and put His Spirit within you to cause you to walk in His statutes. Resolve in His strength, not your own, to love Him with all your heart and soul and to love your neighbor as yourself, aiming in every place to do whatever He says unto you.

We join our prayer with yours, that the Lord would create in you a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within you, that He would not let you take His grace for granted, but would make sin bitter to you and Christ precious to you. May He sprinkle you afresh with pardoning blood and then write His law so deeply within you that your daily life is made to be in accordance with His will, to the praise of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the covenant keeping God.
