Our prayer:
O Sovereign Lord, Creator of the heavens and the earth, we come before You with a heart full of yearning for Your presence in our life and for the life of Your people. Your word teaches us the importance of holy time, reminding us of our need to cease from our labors and to dedicate space for reflection, worship, and renewal. LORD God, we ask that You forgive us for our Sabbath transgressions. We have traded peace for productivity, rest for routine, and, in doing so, we have unintentionally silenced the voice of the Spirit that calls us to stop and be still in Your presence. We agree that this verse reveals a sobering picture of how easily commerce and the pursuit of provision can crowd out devotion to God. As you noted, the people from Tyre were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it. Exodus 20:8-10

While we as believers in Christ are not under the Mosaic Law as a means of justification, for the law was a shadow and Christ is the substance, the principle behind the Sabbath remains vital. God lovingly designed us for rhythms of work and rest, for worship and trust. When we allow work, financial anxiety, or the constant pressure to produce and consume to take precedence over our relationship with God, we exchange peace for productivity and we silence the Spirit's call to be still and know that He is God. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to be still and know that He is God.

Jesus speaks directly to this struggle. He said The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27 He did not abolish the gift of rest, He fulfilled it and became our rest. He invites us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. Hebrews 4:9

This is why we love your reflection that Jesus is the Bread of Heaven and the Word of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 And The Word became flesh, and lived among us. John 1:14 When we make time to feed on Christ the living Word, we are truly keeping the deeper Sabbath, ceasing from our striving to earn favor and resting in His finished work.

So we ask ourselves along with you, are we allowing the Tyre traders of our age, the endless emails, overtime, online shopping, financial fear, and desire for more, to set up shop in our hearts on the Lord's Day and even in our daily quiet time with Him. The Lord calls us to examine this and to repent where we have put mammon before Him. For you cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24 Instead we are called to But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33 To trust His provision frees us from the constant need to strive.

We encourage you and ourselves to be intentional about creating space for rest and worship. This may mean guarding Sunday as a day set apart for corporate worship, fellowship, and family rest, turning aside from unnecessary commerce and labor when possible. It also means daily withdrawing to pray and hear His Word, bringing our financial concerns to Him rather than carrying them alone, for in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 And it means guarding our hearts from the world's influence that tells us our worth is in our wealth or productivity.

We pray together for you and for all who read this, that we would learn the blessedness of holy rest.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, for there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved and have access to Your throne. The question you have brought from Nehemiah is a searching one, and it rightly presses upon the conscience. Those men of Tyre brought fish and all kinds of merchandise into Jerusalem on the Sabbath, and the people of Judah bought. The evil was not only without but within. The traders who knew not God cared nothing for His holy day, but the professed people of God forgot that the Sabbath was His gift and sold their rest for gain.

You have understood the matter well. The Sabbath was given not as a burden but as a mercy. Six days shalt thou labour, but the seventh is rest unto the Lord. By it Israel confessed that bread comes not by toil alone but by the faithful hand of God. When they turned the holy day into a market day they declared that they trusted their nets and their bargains more than their God. And is it not so still. There are some who make idols of their wealth, and getting money becomes the main purpose of their lives. The ivy of worldly care clings and chokes the soul until there is no space left for worship, for prayer, for stillness before the Lord.

Yet hear the sweeter teaching of the Sabbath. Our Lord Jesus showed that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. When He healed on the Sabbath He was doing Sabbath work, the very work for which the day was set apart, that God might be honoured and the weary might find rest. What a blessed thought that Jesus works His miracles of mercy on His own day. The man who had lain thirty and eight years found true rest when Christ bade him take up his bed and walk. So still on the Lord's Day heaven's gates seem to stand more widely open, and many a bowed soul has been lifted up while the Word was preached.

Do not think that rest is idleness. The rest to which we are called in Christ is present rest, rest now, not only rest after death, and it is perfect rest to the soul that comes to Him. Come unto me, He says, and I will give you rest. That is the given rest of forgiveness, when we cease from our own works as God did from His and trust the finished work of our ascended Lord. Then He says, Learn of me and ye shall find rest. That is the found rest of daily discipleship, rest on the wing, rest in motion, rest with the yoke on, when the heart is made like Christ and learns to serve without striving. The one is rest from sin, the other is rest in service, and both are the gift of Jesus.

How then shall we keep this principle in a busy age.

First, confess where work or money has become an idol. Ask the Lord to forgive Sabbath transgressions, not only of open labour on His day but of that inward trading which goes on in the heart even when the hands are still.

Second, keep a holy appointment with God. Work during the six days, for it is your duty, but on the Sabbath enjoy perfect rest both in body and in soul. Gather with the people of God, hear the Word, break bread, and let the smoke of the week clear that you may get a glimpse of heaven. If your calling requires labour on that day, as some must labour for God and for mercy, yet redeem another season for worship and stillness.

Third, live in a perpetual Sabbath by trusting the provision of God. The fish of Tyre could not feed Judah so well as God could. Nor can your anxious toil add one cubit to your life. Trust and you shall rest. Cast your care upon Him who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows, and you shall find that you need not sell your soul to keep your purse.

May the Lord teach you that each moment spent away from Him is a loss, and each moment spent in communion is gain. Take His yoke upon you voluntarily, learn of Him who is meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls, a deep rest, a growing rest, an abiding rest which you shall go on to find more and more till you enter that glorious Sabbatism which remaineth for the people of God.

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, forgive us for trading peace for productivity and rest for routine. We have silenced Thy still small voice with the noise of buying and selling, and we have trusted our own hands more than Thy faithful provision.
