Anxiety

I started a new job about ### weeks ago after not working for years because of anxiety. I sent hundreds of resumes and after prayer I got this job which I thought was a blessing,, well, It’s been anything but a blessing. My anxiety at work has been worse as it’s ever been, I spend the whole day in a state of panic and confusion, I’ve made so many mistakes and have heard coworkers talking about me on a number of occasions, I feel so humiliated. I’m about to be fired. I don’t know why God would allow me to be put shame like this, I trusted Him. Please pray for me

We have heard your heart and we are lifting you up together before the Lord in Jesus name, seeking His will for you in this difficult season. We thank you for sharing so honestly with us and we want you to know that your courage in stepping out after years of not working because of anxiety is seen by God, and He is not distant from your panic and confusion. You prayed and God opened this door, and now you feel humiliated and afraid, wondering why He would allow you to be put to shame when you trusted Him. We want to assure you that God has not put you to shame and He has not abandoned you in this workplace trial.

The Word tells us, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. And also, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7. For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7. What you are experiencing, spending the whole day in a state of panic and confusion, is very real and painful, and God invites you to cast every moment of that fear on Him because He cares deeply for you. He says, Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10. And, Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18.

We understand the added pain of making mistakes and hearing coworkers talk about you. That humiliation cuts deeply, but your worth before God is not measured by your performance on the job. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. Colossians 3:23. We encourage you to continue to do your best as unto the Lord, and to humbly seek help where you can, perhaps asking a trusted supervisor for clarity on tasks or for grace as you are still learning, and seeking godly counsel or wise support for your anxiety. God does not shame His children. The psalmist says, Yes, no one who waits for you shall be disappointed. Psalm 25:3. If this job becomes a place where you are let go, that is not shame before God, it is a circumstance He can still redeem.

We gently want to correct the thought that God allowed this to shame you because you trusted Him. He allows trials not to humiliate us but to refine us and draw us closer to Him. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. James 1:2-3. Sometimes a blessing from God still includes a difficult season of learning and dependence on Him, and His purpose may be to show you His strength in your weakness, to teach you to lean on His peace day by day, and to lead you to the next step He has for you, whether that is remaining in this job with His help or opening another door.

We also noticed that your request mentions God and prayer but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, and calling on His name, that we are saved and that our prayers are heard. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your full trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and to bring every anxious thought to God in His name.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up this dear one to You. You see the years of anxiety, the hundreds of resumes, the hope when this job was received, and now the daily panic, confusion, mistakes, and humiliation. Lord, we ask You to pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Calm the panic, clear the confusion, and remind this dear one that You are near to the brokenhearted. Help them to cast every worry on You because You care for them. Give wisdom and steadiness for each task at work, give favor with coworkers and supervisors, and give words to speak if correction or help is needed. If it is Your will for this job to continue, establish their steps and help them grow in skill and confidence. If You have another path, make it clear and provide faithfully. Most of all, draw them closer to Jesus, deepen their trust in You, and let them know they are not put to shame when they wait on You. Show Yourself as their strength, their provider, and their comfort. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, Amen.

We encourage you to stay in prayer throughout the day, even with short breath prayers in Jesus name when panic rises, to meditate on these scriptures, and to reach out for personal support from a pastor, a trusted believer, or a counselor who can walk with you. God has not forgotten you, He is with you in this workplace, and He will continue to work for your good as you keep trusting Him.

We hear how heavy these past weeks have been for you, and how confusing it feels to have prayed so hard for this job and now spend each day in panic and wondering where God is in it.

Coming back to work after years away took real courage, especially after sending hundreds of resumes. That you kept showing up even while feeling overwhelmed says a lot about your perseverance. It makes sense you would feel humiliated hearing coworkers talk and worrying about mistakes, and that you would be asking why God would allow you to feel exposed like this after you trusted Him for this open door. Struggling at work does not mean He is shaming you or that your trust was misplaced.

When anxiety stays at that panic level all day and makes it hard to think clearly, it can help to have more support around you alongside prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to reach out soon to your primary care doctor or a counselor to talk through what you are experiencing, and to a trusted pastor or mentor who knows you personally. If there is a kind supervisor or HR person, a brief, honest check in about how you are settling in and what success looks like in these first weeks can also give you clearer footing than trying to guess what others are thinking.

We are praying for you and we will keep praying.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift this dear one to You. You see the panic and confusion at work and the ache of feeling humiliated and afraid of losing this job. Give steady wisdom for next steps, provide caring help and counsel, and remind this heart daily that You are near and not against them. Lead them to the right support and to Your peace as they keep walking forward. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest words about panic and confusion have been heard, and they have moved us to pray for you with much tenderness. To come back to work after years away, to have sought the Lord in sending out hundreds of resumes, and then to find the very place you hoped would be a blessing become a place of daily fear, mistakes and humiliating whispers, is a sore trial. It is no wonder you ask why the Lord would allow such shame when you trusted Him.

Hear first what the Psalmist says, and what we would have you say with him, When I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. You need not be ashamed that you are afraid, but you are called to trust while you are afraid. Faith does not at first always still the trembling of the hands, but it turns the heart to the One who can still it. Deal with God as you would have your children deal with you. If He says He will save you if you trust Him in Christ, then trusting Him, He will save you. He who begins a good work does not ask you to finish it, He completes His own work. Your salvation rests not on your steadiness at work, but on the blood of Jesus Christ received by faith from Headquarters, and there can be no mistake about it.

You are spending the whole day in a state of panic, and that panic makes confusion and mistakes to multiply. Hear another word of our Lord, You go and do the right thing and then be no longer anxious about it, but leave the result with God. Do what lies before you faithfully in the moment, as unto the Lord, and leave the outcome with Him who performs all things for you. Cry unto God most high, unto God that performeth all things for you, and make your refuge in the shadow of His wings. Though clouds may surround you, your God is your light, though storms rage around you, your God is your might. He is not the God of the vessel only, but also of the stormy sea.

You write that you feel humiliated and that you have heard coworkers speak against you, and that you fear being put to shame. Our blessed Lord knows that shame. He was despised and rejected of men, and His glory was turned to shame for us, that we might be lifted from shame to glory. Shame itself, though bitter, has often been made by God to drive a soul to seek His name. Fill their faces with shame that they may seek Thy name, O Lord. Not that God delights to humiliate you, but He may allow the loss of your own good opinion of yourself and even the good opinion of others, that you may flee more wholly to Christ and find in Him a better confidence than any workplace can give. Your failure does not cast you away from Him, it may be the very means to press you closer to Him.

And when you feel forsaken, as if God has turned from you, do as your Lord did on the cross. He cried, My God, My God, and though forsaken for our sakes, He still said My God. If God seems absent, do not give up prayer, but pray more earnestly. Do not give up faith, but cry again, My God, My God. True sonship clings to Him even in the dark. He will sooner send help from Heaven for His people than allow a calamity beyond what His mercy and truth can overrule for good.

We will pray for you, that the Lord would quiet your anxious heart with present peace and the hope of future rest, that He would give you steadiness of mind for each task, humility to own mistakes and wisdom to learn, grace to bear the unkind words of others without retaliation, and guidance for those over you. If it is His will to keep you in this place, that He would establish you there, if not, that He would open another door and show you that He has not forgotten your trust. Above all we pray that you would know more deeply that you are His child through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and that whether in employment or out of it, you are kept by Him.

Cast your burden upon the Lord, do the next right thing set before you, and leave the rest with Him who loves you and will not forsake the work of His hands.
