Anxiety/self worth

Thank you for sharing so honestly about the anxiety and the way you are feeling about yourself right now. Feeling like you cannot communicate well, that you are doing more harm than good, and carrying the fear that a relationship will end and leave you unlovable and alone is a heavy burden. It makes sense that your heart feels unsettled and your sense of worth feels shaken.

Your worth is not measured by how smoothly a conversation goes or by whether this relationship continues. Scripture teaches that through faith in Jesus Christ, God adopts those who trust in Him into His own family. Jesus alone is the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth, and through Him you can become an adopted child and an heir of all that God has. Even while you are still growing and maturing, you are already His. He is training you and caring for you as a Father, and He wants you to know how deeply you are loved. God is not looking for a legal, performance based relationship where you earn His approval. He desires a loving relationship with you, where you love Him and live in the confidence of His love for you.

At the heart of our struggles is often our relationship with God. When that relationship is put first, other relationships begin to find their proper place. Jesus taught that we are to abide in Him as a branch abides in the vine. Fruit is not produced by straining and striving, but is the natural consequence of that living connection. A right standing before God does not come from our works, it was given to us by Jesus. Because you are joined to Him, your life can then bear fruit in time, love with its companions of joy and peace and patience and gentleness and goodness and self control. That includes the way we speak and listen to others, with a self sacrificing, understanding and forgiving love that covers and builds up rather than tears down.

That is why effective prayer and real fellowship begin with relationship. You cannot have meaningful fellowship with God until the relationship is established through Christ, and that fellowship is where prayer becomes real. You can come to Him simply as your God, seek Him early and honestly, and bring this anxiety, this fear of being hard to love, and this worry about the future into His presence.

The cure for fear and anxiety is the conscious awareness that the Lord is with you. As the psalm says, the Lord is my shepherd, and even when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for You are with me. His presence is what quiets fear. Wisdom itself begins with a reverent awe of who God is, His greatness and power and nearness, and that awe puts our other fears into perspective. You do not have to find your value in self esteem or in whether another person finds you easy to love. Your greatest need and your greatest security is to rest in what Christ has done for you and to submit your life to Him.

In this relationship that is weighing on you, pray that God would give you wisdom to honor Him in how you communicate and how you love. Ask Him to help you abide in Christ first, so that patience and kindness can grow naturally rather than being forced. Ask Him to guide you according to His will and His design for relationships, which from the beginning He established as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, with purity and self giving love belonging within that covenant. Whether He leads this relationship toward that kind of covenant marriage or leads you on a different path, you can trust that being single does not mean being unlovable or forgotten. You are already fully loved and kept by God, and He is faithful to lead you in the way that is best.

May the Lord bind your heart to His in love, quiet your anxiety with the knowledge of His presence, and teach you more deeply how precious you are as His adopted child. May He give you grace to communicate with honesty and gentleness, to extend and receive forgiveness, and to trust your future to the Shepherd who is with you wherever you go.

Praying that you will sense His loving presence today, that He will strengthen you to abide in Christ, and that He will give you clear wisdom and peace for each step ahead.
