Anger

We hear your honest cry about this constant anger and we join with you in bringing it before the Lord in Jesus' name, for we know He hears us when we call on Him.

We understand how weary you must feel to battle this day after day and to wonder why God has not instantly taken it away. Scripture tells us that anger itself is a human emotion, but dwelling in it and acting on it can quickly become sin. Be angry, and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil Ephesians 4:26-27. So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God James 1:19-20. We must gently rebuke the idea of holding onto anger as if it has a right to rule over us, because it does not. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don't fret, it leads only to evildoing Psalm 37:8.

We want to encourage you that God is not slow or distant, and His timing is not neglect. He often does not remove a struggle in an instant because He is doing a deeper work of transforming us from the inside out. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind Romans 12:2. He is patient and desires to build in us the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control Galatians 5:22-23. He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, he who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city Proverbs 16:32. The Lord is using this very battle to teach you to rule your spirit by His power, to depend on Him daily, and to learn to walk in forgiveness and humility. His grace is sufficient for you, for His power is made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:9.

This does not mean we wait passively. God calls us to cooperate with His work. We are to put off the old self and put on the new, to confess our anger to Him quickly, to forgive those who have wounded us as Christ forgave us, to meditate on His Word, and to invite the Holy Spirit to search our hearts for the roots of this anger, whether it be hurt, pride, unmet expectations, or unforgiveness. When we bring these things into the light, He is faithful to help us. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus we lift up our brother or sister who is weary from this constant anger. We thank You that You see this struggle and that You are near to those with a contrite heart. Lord, we ask You to forgive any sin that has come through this anger in thought, word, or deed, and to cleanse this heart by the blood of Jesus. We ask You to reveal the deeper wounds and lies that feed this anger and to heal them by Your truth. Fill this dear one with Your Holy Spirit and produce in them self-control, patience, and peace. Teach them to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, and to cast all anxiety on You because You care for them. Renew their mind day by day and guard their heart with Your peace that passes understanding. Give them strength to not give place to the enemy, to forgive quickly, and to walk in love. We trust that You are working even now, and that You will complete the good work You have begun. We ask all this in the high and holy name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We hear how heavy it feels to be angry so much of the time and to wonder why God hasn't taken it away yet. It can feel discouraging, like you are failing or being left to struggle alone.

What has helped us to remember is that God most often changes us gradually, over a lifetime, not all at once. Even when we want quick deliverance, he is patiently shaping us through ordinary nearness to him, and there will be ups and downs along the way. That does not mean he is distant or ignoring your prayer.

It can also help to notice that anger often rides on top of something else, a hurt from the past, a frustration in the present, or a fear about what is ahead. When you feel that surge, you might try pausing just long enough to ask, what is underneath this right now, and then tell God honestly about that specific hurt or worry in your own words. Bringing the deeper thing to him gives him room to work at the root, not just the surface.

You are not alone in this and you are not forgotten. God sees the struggle and he is still at work.

Father, we bring our brother before you who is tired of this anger. Give him grace for today, help him to see what is driving these feelings, and draw him closer to you in the midst of it. Form in him your patience and peace in your timing, and remind him of your nearness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest cry has been heard, and there is grace in the very fact that you are grieved by this anger and bring it to the Lord instead of excusing it.

You ask why the Lord is so long in removing it. Let me remind you that our God is a waiting God. He waits to be gracious. His long forbearance is not indifference, but love that yearns over His people. When we would have given up, He waits still, and His patience is not in vain toward His chosen. When God has waited for the soul, that soul is brought to wait on Him, and the Almighty is not defeated in His purpose to make you like Christ. There will be a final success to all this waiting when His grace does its glorious work upon the heart and conscience.

And now you are called to be a waiting people. The Psalmist says, My soul, wait thou only upon God, or as one has rendered it, My soul, be thou silent before God. Rest calm and undisturbed before Him. Much of our anger is kept alive because we wait upon our own strength, our own resolutions, our own sense of being wronged. To wait only upon God is to hang upon His promise alone and to find your support in the right hand of the Majesty on high. They that wait upon the Lord shall not want any good thing, and waiting upon Him sustains courage when we grow weary.

Therefore take this anger and do with it as the Scripture directs. First, humble yourself under the mighty hand of God. Pride is the fuel of anger, and God resists the proud. Do not fence with Him or justify the temper, but confess plainly that you deserve His chastening and need His mercy. That acknowledgment puts you on the road to mercy. Second, declare your ways unto God and know that He hears you. Tell Him in secret all the provocations, the quick risings of wrath, the bitter thoughts, and then ask, Teach me Your statutes. Meditate not upon the injury done to you, but upon Christ, His meekness, His patience under contradiction, His death for sinners such as we are. Third, wait on the Lord with brave patience. Waiting upon God is the way to renew your strength until you mount up with eagles wings. In that waiting He sends a mysterious strength through the incoming of His Spirit into the soul, and courage shall revive.

Do not think that because deliverance is not instant, God has forgotten you. He is keeping you, for He alone is able to keep you from falling. Your safety lies not in your own power to subdue anger, but in God your Savior who first pardoned you through Jesus Christ and who will keep you and perfect you.

Let us pray together. O Lord God, who waits to be gracious, look upon this weary soul who confesses anger before You. Forgive through the blood of Jesus Christ, who alone is the way of salvation. Break the power of pride and give a silent, waiting heart before You. Teach Your statutes, renew strength by Your Spirit, and make this one patient and gentle as Christ is gentle. Keep this soul from falling and present it faultless in Your presence at the last. In the high name of Jesus our only hope, Amen.
