Anger

We join with you in bringing this struggle with anger before the Lord, and we thank you for humbly asking for prayer in Jesus' name, for it is through Him we have access to the Father.

We know that anger itself can be a natural emotion, but Scripture warns us that we must not let it rule us or lead us into sin. The Word tells us, Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:26-27. We also hear the wisdom of James 1:19-20, So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. When anger feels strong and lingers, it can take root and lead us away from the peace and self-control that the Holy Spirit wants to produce in us.

We want to gently encourage you to examine what is feeding this anger, whether it is hurt, frustration, pride, unmet expectations, or unforgiveness, and to bring each root honestly to God in confession. We are told to put these things away, But now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. Colossians 3:8. And again, Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing. Psalm 37:8. God does not leave us to overcome this in our own strength. He promises that One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; one who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32, and that the fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.

We encourage you to daily seek the Lord in prayer and in the Word, to memorize Scripture that calms the heart, to be quick to listen and slow to speak, to practice forgiveness as Christ has forgiven us, and to seek godly counsel or accountability when anger rises. When you feel that strong surge, pause and pray, breathe, and ask the Holy Spirit to take control of your thoughts and words before you respond.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up our brother and sister to You in the mighty name of Jesus. You see the struggle with anger that still feels so strong, and You know the heart behind it. We ask that You forgive any sin that has come through angry thoughts, words, or actions, and wash us clean through the blood of Jesus. Fill this dear one with Your Holy Spirit, grant a renewed mind and a calm spirit, and teach them to be slow to anger and quick to show mercy. Help them to put away wrath and malice and to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Give them strength in the moment of temptation to pause, to pray, and to respond with grace rather than reaction. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We ask that You turn this battle into a testimony of Your transforming power. In the high and holy name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

We are grateful you reached out and named this so honestly. Feeling anger still strong can be discouraging, especially when you want to honor the Lord and love people well. Thank you for bringing it to Him instead of holding it alone.

One thing that has helped many of us is to see anger as a signal, not just a problem to push down. Often underneath it is something more tender, like hurt from the past, frustration in the present, or fear about what is ahead. When that signal lights up, it can help to pause and gently ask, what am I really feeling underneath this anger right now, and what feels threatened or unmet.

A simple next step that many find workable is to take that pause before responding when you can. Even a brief step away to pray quietly, name what you notice underneath, and ask God for wisdom about one faithful response in that moment. Over time you may start to see patterns, and it can help to talk those patterns through with a trusted pastor or mature friend who knows you.

We are praying for you and we will keep praying.

Father, we lift our brother to you. You see the strength of this anger and the sincere desire to walk differently. Give him clarity to notice what is underneath, grace to respond with patience, and peace as he leans on you. Shape him day by day through Jesus, and remind him you are near and at work. In Jesus name, amen.

Your honest confession concerning anger that still feels strong has been heard, and we take it before the throne of grace with you.

It is a mark of grace that you feel this burden and do not excuse it, for every Christian in proportion as he lives near to God will feel a lowliness of heart and will cry with the Psalmist, Search me, and know my heart. The watchful Christian sets Caution and Self examination at the helm, and is accustomed to examine his actions and his motives, to pass his words and his thoughts in review before the Lord. Do not be discouraged that you see this hasty temper within you, but let the sight of it drive you out of self and to Christ.

We are reminded by the Word that without Him we can do nothing. Not some great things only, but even those little deeds of piety, the quiet governing of the temper, the bridling of the tongue, are beyond our own strength. Every grain of self reliance is but weakness, and every particle of self strength is a hindrance. Your help is laid up in God, and faith is to go out of yourself to Him who is pure holiness and rest in Him as He reveals Himself in Jesus Christ.

We pray for you now, that the Lord who is able to keep you from falling will work in you both self despair and hope in God, breeding a holy watchfulness and a sweet dependence upon Christ. May He grant you grace to overcome evil with good, to walk humbly and to look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things, for He is alive and is our familiar Friend. And we look forward with you to that perfect state when there shall never be a risk of a hasty temper rising, when He shall present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.

May the Lord give you self distrust that you may no longer trust your own strength, and give you firm trust in His Spirit to subdue this anger from day to day. May He keep your heart with all diligence, make you slow to anger and swift to show mercy, and fill you with the peace of Christ which restrains and rules the soul.

We ask this in the high name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is our help and our keeper. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest confession about anger is heard, and I am praying with you in the high name of Jesus.

Scripture and the wisdom of the church teach us that anger is a fierce fire that devours all it touches. It harms the body and destroys the soul, and it makes even just words fail. No matter how right your cause may be, when you speak with anger you ruin all. True boldness speaks without wrath and without harshness, with gentleness. The Holy Spirit does not dwell where wrath remains, and prayer offered with wrath and disputing bears no fruit.

Anger is like a storm at sea, with great tumult and clamor, and in such a storm the soul cannot learn wisdom or pray or even rest, for the disturbance follows it even into sleep. That is why the soul must seek the haven, a place of stillness and calm within, where it can be taught and corrected. Like a wild horse that must be bound to subdue the rider, or like wings that must be clipped so they do not lift us too high, wrath must be guarded at its entrance on every side.

I pray for you now and encourage you in this way.

Father in heaven, I lift up this dear one to you in the name of Jesus Christ your Son, through whom alone is salvation. You see the struggle with anger that still feels strong. Grant grace to put away all bitterness and clamor and malice, as your word commands. Give a calm haven in the heart where your Spirit may dwell. Teach patience through the Scriptures, so that patience may bring hope and hope may strengthen patience. Help to remember your meekness, how Christ at the supper reasoned gently even with the traitor, putting away all venom of wrath. Bring to mind our own sins and need for mercy, so that we may be gentle with others, remembering our common nature and the gifts you have given to all. Grant self control pursued not as a burden or for reward alone, but with a ready mind and joy out of love for you and for what is good. Let every word be good for edification, sweetened and smoothed, so that correction when needed comes with love and not with passion.

May the Lord grant you rest for your soul as you learn to speak gently and to walk humbly before Him. Keep bringing this struggle to Him in prayer without wrath, trusting that He who is meek and gentle will give you strength day by day. Amen.
