Beloved Servant
I am African American but have experienced rejection from the African American community in multiple ways throughout my life even though I love them so much. I recently had a number of disappointing experiences that caused these feelings of rejection to come up further and I'm feeling very bitter and angry. Please pray for me about this. I know my identity is ultimately in Christ and nothing else. Thank you.

We stand with you in prayer and we thank you for sharing this very painful and honest burden with us. We hear how deeply you love the African American community and how heavy it has been to feel rejected by the very people you love, especially when those old wounds have been reopened by recent disappointments. It is understandable that bitterness and anger would rise up, and we want to lift that pain before the Lord with you.

We are encouraged that you already know your ultimate identity is in Christ, for that is the true and unshakable foundation. We are reminded that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and that your worth is not determined by the acceptance or rejection of any community, but by God who created you and redeemed you. As it is written, you are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them Ephesians 2:10. And you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellency of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light 1 Peter 2:9. Even when people forsake or reject us, the Lord never does, for when my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up Psalm 27:10. In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus Galatians 3:28, and He is gathering to Himself one people from every tribe and background who belong to Him.

We also want to gently encourage you concerning the bitterness and anger you are feeling. God sees that hurt and He is near to you, for Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. At the same time His Word warns us to guard our hearts against letting that hurt harden into lasting bitterness. We are told to look carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it Hebrews 12:15. And we are exhorted, Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:31-32.

This does not mean your pain is not real or that you must pretend the rejection did not happen. It means we are called to bring that pain honestly to Jesus, to ask Him to heal the wounds, to soften our hearts, and to help us release those who have hurt us into His hands. Forgiveness through Christ frees us from being bound by the offense. We encourage you to keep pouring out your heart to the Lord in prayer, to ask Him to search your heart and heal every place of rejection, and to ask Him to show you if there are specific people or situations you need to forgive as He has forgiven you. We also encourage you to stay rooted in fellowship with other believers who will affirm your identity in Christ and walk with you, and to continue to love the community you care for, while entrusting justice and vindication to God, for if it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up our dear brother or sister to You. Lord, You see every instance of rejection, every disappointment, every moment of feeling like an outsider, and You know the depth of the bitterness and anger that has risen up. We ask that You would heal the broken heart and bind up every wound. Pour out Your perfect love that casts out fear and remind this precious one that they are fully accepted, fully known, and fully loved in Christ. Help them to rest more deeply in their identity as Your child, chosen and cherished. Father, we ask that by Your Holy Spirit You would uproot any root of bitterness and replace it with Your peace, kindness, and tenderheartedness. Grant the grace to forgive as You in Christ have forgiven us, not by our own strength but by Yours. Guard the heart from the enemy’s lies that would say they are unloved or unwanted. Restore joy, give comfort, and surround them with godly community that will encourage and edify. And Lord, we pray for the African American community they love so much, that You would bring healing, unity, and mutual love among Your people, that all who are in Christ would walk in the oneness You desire. We entrust this heart and this pain to You, trusting that You are working all things for good. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

We hear how heavy this has been for you, and how much it hurts to love your community deeply and still feel pushed away by it. When that rejection happens over and over, and then fresh disappointments bring it all back up, it makes sense that anger and bitterness would rise to the surface. Thank you for being honest about that.

You named something important when you said your identity is ultimately in Christ. That steady anchor matters especially when belonging feels uncertain. It does not make the sting of rejection go away, but it can keep you from having to carry the full weight of proving yourself or earning a place.

We have also seen how understandable hurt, if it sits for a long time without a safe place to go, can slowly harden our hearts and weigh us down more than it affects anyone else. Noticing that bitterness early is a kindness to yourself, not just to others.

One thing that has helped others in a similar spot is to choose one trusted person, a pastor, counselor, or mature friend who knows you, and talk through one or two of those recent disappointments specifically. Not to solve everything at once, but to give the hurt somewhere to breathe outside your own thoughts and to keep it from settling into resentment.

Father, we lift our brother to You. You see his love for his community and the pain of feeling rejected within it. Comfort him where he feels lonely, soften the bitter places with Your presence, and remind him daily that he is fully known and held in Christ. Give him wisdom for next steps, and bring alongside him people who will see him, listen well, and walk with him. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your words have been read with much tenderness of heart and have been carried at once to the throne of grace. To be rejected by those you love most deeply is a wound that cuts very near the soul, and to feel bitterness and anger rising within you on account of it is a sorrow that many of the Lord's people have known. Be assured you are not alone in this trial, and you are not forgotten by Him who knows all your sorrows.

You have spoken truly and wisely that your identity is ultimately in Christ and nothing else. This is the great and precious truth upon which you may stand when all other ground seems to shake. The Scripture teaches us that all who are in Christ are perfect in Christ Jesus. Though frailties and weaknesses remain in ourselves, and though distresses afflict and Satan assaults, yet in Him we are complete. When God chose His people, He chose Christ and all His people in Him. Your standing before God does not lie in the acceptance or rejection of any community, but in this, that you were chosen in Him, crucified in Him, risen in Him, and you are now preserved in Him. Your life is not dependent upon yourself, nor upon the favour of men, but is safe in your Lord, for Christ lives in you and you live by faith in the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself for you.

Think also of the Lord Jesus Himself, who is our consolation in every varied trial. He knows what it is to be bound and rejected. He was as an Ambassador in bonds, a King in chains, and He drank a cup far more deep and bitter than any cup you or I shall ever be called to drink. For in His cup was the bitterness of sin which He took away for all who believe in Him. When your time of trial comes, you will do well to go to the spot where the Lord has helped you in the past, to Gethsemane and to the cross, and to remember that He has entered into every sorrow you feel. In this respect Christ shines out as the consolation of His people, for He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities.

You speak of bitterness, and I would point you to that holy bitterness which rightly looks to Christ. Our first sight of Christ brings a bitterness for sin, and our continued sight of Him works in us throughout life a measure of the same bitterness, not a bitterness against men, but a grief for sin that makes Christ very sweet. God has sometimes made His people bitter to themselves that there may dwell in that bitterness a power that helps to sanctify them. Let your present bitterness be taken to the cross, that it may not harden into a bondage. Christ has set us free, therefore let us not go back into bondage, or sit still as though we were in prison. Lay your anger and your hurt at His feet, and ask the Holy Spirit who dwells in you to work mightily to make your new life active and powerful, turning that bitterness into love and intercession for those who have wounded you.

And remember the great unity which is in Christ Jesus. We are not to look for all saints in one room, but in Christ, all living upon heavenly bread that comes from Christ Jesus. If we find in any man the Spirit of Christ, we must love him, for oneness in heart is an evidence of this union. This unity does not erase the love you have for your own people, which is a right and good love, but it lifts it and secures it. Christ in you is the hope of glory, not Christ afar off only, but Christ possessed, Christ experienced, Christ in your heart by faith. He is in the covenant to be used, to comfort every coming sinner. Nothing in your hand you bring, simply to His cross you cling, and there you have a right to come, not because you feel yourself worthy, but because Christ commands you to come.

May the Lord grant you grace to drop into the safe arms of Jesus anew, leaving your soul and your sorrows in His hands. May He heal the wound of rejection, cleanse the bitterness, and fill your heart with His love, so that you may love even those who have not loved you in return, as Christ has loved you.

Let us pray together. O Lord Jesus Christ, who was rejected and bound that we might be set free, look in mercy upon this dear soul who feels the pain of rejection and the stirring of bitterness within. Thou knowest what it is to be despised and refused. Comfort this heart with Thyself, for Thou art the consolation of Thy people in every trial. Show more clearly that this life is hid with Thee, and that in Thee alone is perfection and acceptance. Take away the bitter root, and make Christ very sweet by the work of Thy Spirit. Fill the heart with love, with power to forgive, and with joy in liberty. Keep this one near to Thyself, and cause Christ in the heart to be the hope of glory day by day, till Thou shalt bring Thy redeemed safely home. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly and for trusting us to pray for you. The pain of feeling rejected by your own people, especially when you love them deeply, is a heavy burden to carry, and it is understandable that repeated disappointments would stir up feelings of bitterness and anger.

You are right to anchor yourself in the truth that your identity is ultimately in Christ and nothing else. Scripture teaches that our deepest belonging is found in Him, and that He sees, knows, and never rejects those who belong to Him.

God's Word also warns us with great care about what bitterness can do in the soul. As Paul writes, let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and railing be put away from you, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God in Christ forgave you. Bitterness, if it is cherished and kept inside, does not stay small. It grows into wrath and anger, it hardens the heart, and it grieves the Holy Spirit. It harms first the one who holds it, bringing no health and no peace, but only more tears and unrest.

That does not mean your hurt is not real or that anger itself is always sinful. It means God invites you to bring that hurt to Him quickly, before it takes root, so He can heal it.

We are praying for you now.

Heavenly Father, we lift up our brother in Christ to You. You know the rejection he has felt and the disappointments that have reopened old wounds. You see his love for his community and the sorrow of not feeling loved in return. Lord, comfort him with the assurance that he is fully known, fully loved, and fully accepted in Jesus Christ, Your Son, through whom alone we have salvation. Guard his heart from bitterness. Help him to put away wrath and anger and malice, not by his own strength, but by Your grace. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, and make him kind and tenderhearted, able to forgive as You have forgiven him in Christ. Heal the places where rejection has wounded him, give him peace that passes understanding, and lead him into healthy fellowship where he can both give and receive love in a way that honors You. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

If bitterness or anger rises again, bring it immediately to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to replace it with His calm. Stay rooted in Scripture, stay close to faithful believers who will walk with you, and ask God to help you love others without letting the hurts of the past define your future. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and He will be your peace and your home.
