You cry out for peace, and rightly so, for peace is the mother of all good things, the foundation of joy. But do not mistake the world’s peace, a mere truce among circumstances, for the peace of Christ. See how the apostle greets the churches: “Grace to you and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is no light word. It is the peace that Christ Himself left His disciples, saying, “My peace I give unto you.” When you hear the presiding minister in the assembly pronounce, “Peace be unto you,” receive it as Christ’s own gift. True peace is not the absence of trouble but the reconciliation of heaven and earth, the cutting off of what is diseased so that the whole body may be healthy. You ask for a quiet heart and a stable life; then cling to this peace, not the fragile calm of robbers agreeing together, but the peace that comes from being rightly ordered under your King, who is both King of righteousness and King of Salem, that is, King of Peace.
Why are you discouraged, worried, overwhelmed? You say you do not fully understand, but look closely: your heart is entangled in earthly things, finances, the future, even the numbers on a screen. These are the very cares that choke the word. You measure your worth by followers and views, as if registering the names of men as patrons of your work. But your calling is from God! You are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be a saint, and you are not your own. Of Him that calleth is everything; of you, the called, what is there but to obey? If He created the universe out of nothing, a truth far more staggering than any daily provision, will He not care for you and your household? You ask for open doors; He is the door. You beg for wisdom; He is the wisdom of God. Trust not in your own reasoning, for the philosophers who rely on that are blown about by every doubt. Faith is required. Believe that He is working even when your eyes see nothing but closed paths.
You long for a simple, peaceful life. This is not a small thing, but do not imagine that peace depends on a full purse. The Lord’s peace is a gift that flourishes in poverty and plenty alike. Remember, each believer has an angel who continually beholds the face of the Father, your guardian is not idle. So be sober, as in the presence of a tutor, and do not let the demon of fear whisper that you are abandoned. The very fact that you cried out shows the Spirit at work within you.
And as for your blogging, understand this: you serve not men but the Lord Christ. If you create with a joyful heart, entrusting the outcome to Him, then your labor is not in vain, whether ten or ten thousand read it. Better days are ahead, yes, but they may not look as you imagine. They are the days of drawing closer to the eternal peace, the days when you learn to overlook worldly things and cleave to what is spiritual. In that way, you will have earth with heaven, and all anxiety will be put to flight.
Rise, then, from your discouragement. He who called you is faithful. Go in the peace of Christ, and let that peace rule in your heart. The Lord carries what you cannot carry, only do not snatch it back. One day at a time, one prayer at a time, look not at the waves but at Him who walks upon them.
