Your prayer concerning a healthy heart, the heaviness of anxiety, and the desire for forgiveness has been brought before the Lord, and I have pleaded for you at the throne of grace.
Do you tremble and shake for fear, and with a penitent heart desire forgiveness. Hear then what the Lord Himself declares, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. It is a divine forgiveness, and therefore sure and complete. Were all men to hiss at you and withhold their pardon, yet if He forgives, you may enter heaven. It is a surprising forgiveness, so free and so full that the Lord repeats it, I, even I, lest any doubting soul should question it. However sinful your life may have been until now, there is forgiveness with God even for you, through the blood of Jesus Christ alone. He not only forgave at the first, but continues daily to forgive, and this forgiveness is eternal and perfect. If you have been the chief of sinners, you may have the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and that great debt of sin is fully discharged, and the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your heart.
You ask also for a healthy heart and for anxiety to depart if it be His will. This is a right and submissive prayer. Know that hardness of heart is a grievous evil, and the Lord has promised in the covenant of grace, I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. It is Gods work to give you a tender heart, not yours to create it within yourself. When the Holy Spirit puts the Cross into the heart, the heart is dissolved in tenderness. God maketh the heart soft. He is also He who bindeth up the broken hearted. Best of all, as the Healer of broken hearts, God has chosen One whose own heart was broken. Jesus knows what despair means, for His heart was pierced for us, and He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. Bring your poor broken and anxious heart to the heart that was once pierced by the soldiers spear and find sweetest rest in Jesus.
For that anxiety which now surges round you, hear the promise, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee. Peace, perfect peace, even in this dark world of sin, for the blood of Jesus whispers peace within. Peace with sorrows surging round and with thronging duties pressed is still possible to the soul that stays itself upon Christ. All the waters in the ocean are as nothing to the vessel so long as they are kept outside, but when they break into the hold of the heart we are in peril. Look to Christ, stay your mind upon Him, trust Him fully, and He will keep you.
I have prayed for you thus, that the Lord in His mercy would grant you health of body as seems good in His wisdom, that He would calm your anxious thoughts and keep you in perfect peace as you trust in Him, and that He would give you a full assurance of His complete and surprising forgiveness through the precious blood of Christ. May you know that there is forgiveness with Him, that He has taken away the stony heart and given you a heart of flesh, and that He who heals the broken hearted will not despise a contrite spirit.
May the Lord hear according to His perfect will, and cause you to rejoice in His pardoning love. Amen.
