Forty-one years of wedded life call for a holy celebration indeed. It is no small thing when a man and a woman, joined by solemn covenant, have borne one another’s burdens, shared one another’s joys, and kept faith through every season. This is a milestone that whispers of God’s enduring kindness. I shall lift my heart to the throne of grace for them, but let us not merely ask for prayer, let us consider the weight of what God has wrought in this union.
Marriage, as you well know, is not a bond of mere birth or convenience. It springs from choice, a deliberate act of the will, and it is cemented by mutual love. Where there is no choice on both sides, it is scarcely a true marriage at all. Yet the world is quick to forget that the Divine idea of marriage is a complete oneness, no longer two persons maintaining separate identities, but two lives so fused that they become one. Forty-one years says something of that holy mingling. It is no small token of grace when a husband and wife have learned to die to self and live for one another, reflecting the sacred mystery of Christ and His Church.
Every enduring marriage is a faint echo of the marriage of the Lamb. Think upon that! The union of Christ and His redeemed people is the pattern and the pinnacle. As we see a couple stand steadfast, we are reminded that the Saviour’s love for His bride is a Lamb-like love, tender, sacrificial, sealed with His own blood. It is only as we behold His wounds and His cross that our hearts learn true love at all. So, too, in the daily grind of domestic life, love must echo Calvary: patient, forgiving, serving without reserve. I pray this couple has tasted that blessed reality in deepening measure.
Let us pray, O Lord God of Israel, who art Thyself married to Thy people in an everlasting covenant, we thank Thee for this husband and wife whom Thou hast preserved together these forty-one years. Thou hast been their dwelling place and their shield. Look upon them now with renewed favour. Let the joy of this anniversary be full of holy gratitude, a true celebration not unlike the Passover of old, when Thy people remembered their deliverance with gladness. May they recount Thy mercies and find their love made fresh. Strengthen what remains; let their union be a living sermon of Thy faithfulness. Prepare them day by day for that great marriage supper of the Lamb, when the whole Church, perfected and glorious, shall be presented unto Christ without spot or wrinkle. And until that day, keep them walking hand in hand, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of their faith. Bless their household, their children and grandchildren if Thou hast given them, and make this latter portion of their pilgrimage radiant with hope. Amen.
Rejoice with them, and let your own heart be lifted up. Blessed indeed are they who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb, and blessed are those who, even now, live as partakers of that coming joy.
