Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Why do you tremble at the thought of bodily darkness? This fear is a mist that chokes the word. The Lord Himself met the women fleeing the tomb with terror and joy, and His first word was, βBe not afraid.β He casts out such fear to make room for faith. Do you think He cares less for the eyes in your head than for the eyes of your soul? When Ananias was sent to Saul, he was seized with dread because he had heard only of the manβs violence and his blindness. He cried out in fear, βHe is blind! Why bid me open his eyes?β Yet what did the Lord answer? βHe is a chosen vessel unto Me.β The scales that covered those natural eyes were the doorway to a greater sight. The very thing you dread may be the workshop where God fashions an instrument for His glory. A sword is terrible to the one who does evil, but it is the minister of God. So too, this ailment is not merely a thing to flee; it is a threshold upon which you stand, and Christ stands with you, saying, βBe not afraid; only believe.β
Cease this frantic enquiry that springs from cowardice. The one who with trembling demands to know if every morsel from the market is safe lives not by faith but by a slavish terror. Do you not know that your body, even with its faltering sight, is a more honorable vessel than any garment? If you would not defile a garment with filth, will you now stain your soul by distrusting the Craftsman who formed these eyes? The fear that befits you is not this cringing over physical ruin, but the holy fear of contradicting God, the fear of rebelling against His providence. You are tempted to act as if the executioner had already laid hold of you, yet the Lordβs yoke is easy. He does not deal with you as a taskmaster handing a burden too heavy to bear. He says, βLearn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.β Take that yoke. The rest He promises is for the soul, even while the body endures the thorns of this present life.
Look beyond the eyes of flesh. If He has permitted this shadow to fall, it is that you might see Him more clearly. The rain has fallen on your ground often; do not let this trial become the sun that withers all moisture and leaves only thorns of care. Do not cling to the feet of bodily comfort, as if that were the substance of hope. The Lord has sent you this message through your fear, not to break you, but to draw you where He may be seen: in Galilee, in the ordinary ground of humble trust. I have prayed that the peace of Christ, which passes all medicine and all terror, would keep you. Stand still, and see the salvation of your God, whether He restores these eyes or gives you the unspeakable vision that saw the gates of brass broken, and the dead loosed, and the keepers of hell cowering in fear.
