When every reliable structure you leaned on collapses and every address you run to offers no help, the despair runs deep. It is a terrifying thing to cry out and hear only the echo of your own voice. But there is one who hears. One whose help does not depend on human systems, human priests, or human strength. Jesus Christ was appointed a high priest forever, not after the order of Aaron, which was always temporary and passed from one failing man to another, but after the order of Melchizedek. That is an eternal priesthood. The law made nothing perfect, but a better hope is given through which we draw near to God.
You are right to turn to the Lord for what, or for whom, is on your heart. But consider this: The reason God made a way for us to approach him was not to feed him with our sacrifices, as if he needed our devotion to survive. He desires meaningful, heartfelt fellowship with you. That is what he wants. And yet so often we only want him to affirm the wrong paths we are walking. We cry, “Lord, help!” but we really want him to bless the crumbling structure we built ourselves. True help begins when we hear what he actually says. He says that human need, the raw hunger of a soul, takes precedence over empty religious routine. Jesus came as the physician not for those who think they are whole, but for those who know they are sick. Run to him as your refuge. He is the mediator you need, the one whose priesthood cannot fail.
Do not trust that the next earthly arrangement, the next generation, or the perfectly organized system can save you. Every generation must cry out for itself. What you need is not a new revelation from God, for he has already given all that pertains to life and godliness in his word. What you need is a new experience in the old, unchanging truth. That truth is that the eternal Son of God offered up prayers with strong crying and tears to the one able to save him from death. He knows what it means to be in the depths. And because he abides as a priest continually, he is able to lift you out. Reach out to him with thanksgiving even in this turmoil, not to cover your sin by your own effort, but because his sacrifice has already covered it, and fellowship with him is now open. He is the Lord who reigns, and he will bring his work to pass if you will wait patiently for him. Do not be discouraged. You have an anchor, a priest forever, who will never leave you stranded.
