The tempest brow of this waiting time may bear letters of lightning, but they spell not His absence, only His majesty.
Wait on the Lord. And what is this waiting? Not a folding of the hands in despair, but a brave waiting, as a servant waits upon his master, ready for whatever direction he gives. You are a traveler looking to your Guide; the Pilot holds the helm. Will you snatch it from His hand because the harbor is not yet in sight? His promise may tarry, but it never fails. He is a waiting God, longsuffering, full of compassion, and blessed are all they that wait for Him.
You say you need this visa, and your need is real. But the deeper need is to know that you are His, approved in the Beloved, regardless of earthly permissions. The blood of Jesus Christ secures for you an eternal acceptance which no Australian immigration officer can grant or revoke. The desire for this visa is not something to condemn, but let us not set our hopes on it as though it were our ultimate good. For our true citizenship is in heaven, and the things of this earth are passing shadows. When you pray, do not think that God is bound to grant every request like a servant obeying a master; rather, He often delays or denies in order to prove the sincerity of your faith. As I have said, God even tempted Abraham, not to learn what He already knew, but to show forth the man’s fortitude to all. So this waiting may be a trial to refine you, to teach your children patience, and to make your hope rest not on human approval but on the God who sees your hearts.
Pray, then, with that mind. Say, “Lord, You know what is needful for this family. If this visa be for our good and Your glory, open the door; but if not, grant us grace to abide content under Your will, for You are all-powerful and Your lovingkindness is better than life.” I do not say this because I think you will fail the test; I am persuaded of better things of you, things that accompany salvation. But it is better that I speak plainly, even at the risk of seeming severe, than that you should set your affections too firmly on an earthly outcome and come to think of God as a mere dispenser of favors.
Let your conduct be such that even the officials may wonder at your peace and integrity. Not as pleasing men, but God, who proves our hearts. If the approval comes, give thanks and use this residence for the work of the kingdom. If it is withheld, know that the crown is not for those who merely cry “Lord, Lord,” but for those for whom it is prepared by patient endurance and noble deeds. Remember Epaphroditus, who counted not his life dear for the sake of the Gospel. You too have a service: to raise your children in the fear of the Lord, to keep your marriage bed undefiled, and to witness to Christ in a strange land. That is your high calling, whether on a visa or not.
