“We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.†2 Thessalonians 1:3 These are the words God spoke through the apostle Paul to a community of believers in a town called Thessalonica. Because they are the words of Scripture, they are the word of God for us today.\ The letter has just three short chapters and they are full of encouragement. I once heard a recently retired minister speak and he said, “If I could do it all over, the one thing I would do is encourage God’s people more.†The title for our series is “Staying the Course When You’re Tired of the Battle.†That’s what this letter is about...
To thine own self be true! When you are honest with yourself, you will be honest with others. When you love yourself you will genuinely love others, you will help others as well as yourself. Be authentic with yourself and it will be easy to be authentic with others and they will love you back, authentically. When you totally love yourself and are happy with your life, then you can return that affection with others. Create stability in your life before you can share it with the world. Look to yourself for happiness, love and laughter. No one else can give that to you but you. Whatever it is that you are looking for, whether it is for more love, money, self-confidence or any other desire, when you commit to loving yourself first, there is...
RESTORE OUR MARRIAGE “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.†Mark 10:6-9 Is your heart’s cry to the Lord, “Restore our marriage?†How much do you love your spouse? On Monday, Benjamin shared how much he loves his wife. I pray that you will be willing to pay the price of sacrifice by praying, fasting and waiting on the Lord's timing in resurrecting your marriage, reigniting and rekindling your love, and rebuilding your marriage on the solid rock of Jesus Christ one hour and one...
A CUP OF FLOWERS On Valentine's Day, 1987, we were divorced and I lived a hundred miles away from my family. In my opinion, there was no hope for our reconciliation. An article I had written on divorce recovery had just been published nationwide in a denominational single's magazine. I was making more money than ever before. There was a girlfriend seriously in the picture. I had it made, but I was miserable. On Valentine's Day I had prepared dinner for the other woman. The dining table was set using my best hand-me-down tablecloth and my apartment, decorated in “Early American Divorce,†was spotless. This was going to be some romantic Valentine's evening. Five minutes before my guest was to arrive, there was a knock on the door...
My daughter was only two years old when she first verbally expressed love and understanding for her Daddy. Little Dana was watching her father mop up the soaked carpet in the church hallway. He had dropped by the church building to pick up some things and found another septic tank overflow. "What a mess," he said, angrily, and started the all-too familiar chore of cleaning up. Dana asked a few questions and got short, curt replies. She heard a couple sighs of exasperation as her father, the pastor of the church, tried to keep from cursing up one side and down the other at the old, rundown building that took so much of his time in maintenance and repairs. Despite his responses toward her, Dana's tiny heart went out to her frustrated...
Every day, many thoughts pop into your mind – some of which are true, and some of which are lies. That mix of thoughts sounds like a chatterbox, creating incessant noise that can interfere with your ability to clearly hear God’s voice speaking to you. If you let deceptive thoughts distract you from God’s messages, you can fall victim to insecurity, fear, condemnation, and discouragement. The key to overcoming those unhealthy attitudes is crashing the chatterbox regularly so you can hear God’s voice above all others. Here’s how you can do so: Recognize the spiritual importance of your thoughts. The battle between good and evil that’s constantly taking place in this fallen world infiltrates your mind. While the Holy Spirit...
Our Relationship to God In Matthew 22:37 Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." There are various ways of showing God that we love Him. Our worship and praise can put our love into words said directly to Him. But we should also show our love. "Now ... listen to what the Lord your God demands of you: Have reverence for the Lord and do all that he commands. Love him, serve him with all your heart, and obey all his laws" Deuteronomy 10:12 13). "But whoever obeys his word is the one whose love for God has really been made perfect" (I John 2:5). If we want to show our love to God, we will follow the instructions He gives us in His Word. Another way to show our love to God is by...
Wow, this really hits home with me today! What a word! I hope this encourages you all as much as it did me! Scroggymommy5 aka Theresa We Trust Because He Loves If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. 2 Timothy 2:13 (NLT) Shortly after I decided to continue honoring my dead marriage and continue trusting in God’s restorative powers, I felt extremely convicted to share this decision (as well as my faith and hope in God) with my family and friends. It was definitely not something I wanted to do, but since the conviction just wouldn’t leave me alone, I eventually decided to do so. I spent many a terrified afternoon sharing and explaining my position and my faith in God with both Christians and...
