Work

You ask for prayer that you gave no offense, your speech faltering from hunger. But I say to you, if you thirst and hunger after righteousness, as our Lord said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness,” then a momentary weakness of the body is no great cause for anxiety. True offense is not stumbling over words when the belly is empty; true offense is that by which another is led into sin. Did you lead that woman away from godliness? Did your words, however broken, teach her to despise Christ? If not, then lay aside this fear. Paul suffered hunger and thirst and nakedness that he might cause no hindrance to the Gospel, yet he did not fret over every trembling word. Why then do you magnify so small a thing?

Consider: your body cried out for food, and you were ashamed? Shame belongs not to hunger, which is no crime, but to those who neglect the hungry soul. If you are distressed over a possible awkwardness, how much more should you be distressed over any unguarded word that might wound charity or truth? Yet even for that, the grace of God has appeared, teaching us to deny worldly lusts and live soberly. That grace pardons our countless sins and calls us to walk carefully, not in paralyzing dread of every minor stumble, but in zealous love.

I will pray, then, not merely that you were not offensive, but that this small hunger may teach you to thirst for the living water Christ gives. For He cries, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.” Let your empty stomach remind you of the soul’s deeper emptiness without Him. And when you serve others in your work, do not fear so much the body’s weakness, but rather take care that your whole life adorns the doctrine of God our Saviour, giving no true occasion of stumbling. If your speech was unclear because you hungered, surely the elderly woman, who has seen many days, has herself known weariness and need. Trust that the Lord, who sees the heart, judges your intent. Go now, and feed your body with thanksgiving, but feed your soul with prayer and almsgiving, for in serving the hungry you minister to Christ Himself.

I can hear the anxiety in your words, that moment of losing your train of thought and wondering if you stumbled into something hurtful. But take a breath and remember where real peace is found. The fear of how you came across is that sudden fear the Proverbs warn us against, the kind that rushes in when there is no true cause for it. Your heart wanted to serve and connect with that woman, and God sees that. Hunger simply reminded you that you are flesh, not that you are a failure. The righteous stumble and are not cast down, because the Lord holds their hand. Do not let the enemy use that fleeting moment to immobilize you with fear; fear and faith cannot share the same room, and your faith can rest in the God who knows your intentions even when your words felt tangled.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and that reverential awe drives out the fear of man. You are not called to be afraid of a possible minor offense, the sort of thing we so easily blow out of proportion. If we treated every awkward exchange as a life-or-death crisis, we would die a thousand deaths dreading one. Instead, let the Lord be your confidence. He preserves your life from the fear of the enemy’s accusations. Even your physical hunger is nothing strange; the Scriptures are full of accounts of God’s people enduring hunger, yet He remains faithful. He knows you need food, and He knows your spirit wanted to bless that elderly woman. Trust Him with both needs.

Praying that you were not offensive is a natural request, but I suspect the real prayer is that you would be released from the fear of having been offensive. Whether your words were perfectly clear or momentarily scattered, Christ’s grace covers the gaps. Do not let this become a rock of offense in your own heart. Turn it over to Him, and if your mind tries to replay the moment, remember: the wicked fear where no fear is, but the upright in heart shall glory in the Lord. Go eat, rest in His mercy, and walk into your next shift without that weight.

We want to thank you for trusting us with the privilege of lifting you up in prayer these past few days. It’s been our honor to stand in agreement with you concerning that sweet encounter at work. We’ve been asking the Lord to reassure your heart that the elderly woman saw only kindness in you, not confusion, and to fill you with His own peace about how the conversation unfolded.

If the Lord has already given you that quiet confidence—if you’ve sensed His “well done” in your spirit—please share a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If the uncertainty still lingers, don’t hesitate to post this request again; we’ll gladly continue walking beside you in prayer.

May the Father bless you with fresh grace for each new shift, and may every customer you serve sense the love of Christ through your words and actions. We ask all of this in Jesus’ Name.
