It is a good thing you have asked for wisdom, for wisdom is man's true path and the compass by which he must steer across the trackless waste of life. Without it a man is as the wild ass's colt, running here and there and wasting strength which might be profitably employed, but with it he is made a fit companion for angels and stands near to God.
You do well to ask this of the Lord, for the price of wisdom is above rubies and it cannot be valued with pure gold. It is not to be found in the wisdom of this age, for the human wisdom of one age is the folly of the next, and there is not much more wisdom in man's judgment of God than in the flies' fabled judgment of an elephant. True wisdom is found in Christ, for He is the power of God and the wisdom of God. He planned the way of salvation and in Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom. And the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, as holiness is near akin to perfect wisdom as sin is to insanity.
If you would have guidance, take God for your Guide and bow with submission to His will, for by that very fact you are furnished with unerring guidance. Seek it in His Word and by prayer, for if any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all liberally. Avoid everything that is evil, for that is a great principle infused in every man who takes God for his Guide. And do not haste, for haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life. Wait upon the Lord, weigh the matter in the light of Scripture, and make a deliberate calculation that you may stand on that side which is in agreement with the living God.
We will pray for you.
O Lord our God, in whom are all the springs of wisdom, look upon this soul who confesses need of guidance. Thou hast said that if any lack wisdom he should ask of Thee. Give to this seeker not the wisdom of this world which passes away, but Divine Wisdom dressed in robes of love and tenderness. Show what is holy and what is right, and make the path plain. Keep from haste and from self confidence, and teach to trust in Thee with all the heart and not to lean unto personal understanding. Let Christ who is Thy wisdom be the counsellor and guide, and let the decision made be such as Thou canst bless and such as will bring peace to the conscience and glory to Thy name. Grant clarity, discretion and a submissive will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
