Wind and storms

Beloved of All
Praying for the high winds to calm and protection for all in the path of the heavy rains and flooded areas, in Jesus' name, Amen

We lift our voices together in prayer, standing firm in the authority of Jesus Christ, as we intercede for those facing the fury of wind and storm. Heavenly Father, we acknowledge Your sovereignty over all creation, over the winds that howl, the rains that fall, and the floods that rise. You spoke the world into existence, and You hold every element in Your mighty hand. We declare that the storms must bow to the name of Jesus, for there is no power greater than Yours.

Lord, we ask You to calm the winds that rage and still the waters that threaten. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, cover the hearts of those in the path of these storms. Protect every life, every home, and every family in the way of danger. Be a shelter for the weary, a refuge for the frightened, and a strong tower for those who feel helpless. We speak life and safety over every community, trusting in Your promise that You will never leave nor forsake Your children.

Father, we also pray for wisdom and discernment for those in leadership, mayors, governors, emergency responders, and volunteers, as they make decisions to protect and serve. Grant them strength, clarity, and courage in the face of chaos. Let Your hand guide their efforts, and may Your love be evident in every act of kindness and rescue.

We rebuke the spirit of fear that seeks to grip hearts in this time. For You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We declare that faith will rise in the midst of the storm, and Your name will be glorified through every testimony of protection and provision.

Lord, we also lift up those who may not yet know You. In the midst of the storm, reveal Yourself as their Savior and Deliverer. Let them see Your hand at work and turn their hearts toward You, for there is salvation in no one else but Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). May this time of trial draw many into a deeper relationship with You.

We trust in Your unfailing love, O God, and we rest in the assurance that You are our ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Even as the winds blow and the rains fall, we will not fear, for You are with us. We declare Your promises over this situation: that You will command the storm to be still, and it will obey Your voice (Mark 4:39).

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We hear the weight in your words, the howl of high winds and the threat of rising water can shake even the bravest hearts. In moments like these, when machines and plans feel fragile, it’s good that you’re turning your face toward the One who holds all things. We’re standing with you in prayer, trusting that Jesus is near to every person huddled beneath a roof or fleeing a flood.

While we pray, simple steps can help steady our hands. Keep a phone handy and heed your local emergency guidance; know the safest room in your home and have a flashlight and water close. If you can do so without risking your own safety, check on a neighbor, especially someone elderly or alone. In another tornado season, we saw a pastor crawl from his own damaged house and dig a trapped neighbor out of the rubble. That kind of quiet care reflects God’s heart in the middle of hard moments.

Let’s pray together now:

Lord Jesus, you spoke to wind and wave, and they obeyed. We ask for your mercy: still the violent gusts, ease the heavy rains, and shield every person, home, and livelihood in the path of these storms. Guard the first responders, the anxious, and the most vulnerable. Wrap your peace around those who are afraid, and bring calm where there is chaos. In your name, amen.

You feel the wind and you hear the rain, and your first thought flew straight to the throne of grace, for yourself, yes, but also for all the souls within this storm’s reach. That is the instinct of a heart the Lord has already made alive. A renewed spirit cannot bolt the door against others and pray only for its own dry corner. No, a child of God, when the tempest breaks, thinks at once of the Father’s great household and cries, “Keep them all, Lord, keep them every one.”

And He will. You may be sure of this: the wind has never once left the hollow of His hand. The rain does not spill a single drop without His leave. When the disciples cried out in the boat and the waves were slapping over the sides, what did our Master do? He did not scramble for a bucket or strain at the oars. He spoke to the wind as a man would gently hush a startled child, and the squall lay down like a lamb. That same voice marshals the storm sweeping over you now. It is not a runaway giant. It is a servant on a short leash, and the hand that holds that leash is pierced with a nail for love of you.

So do not let your mind paint pictures of the worst that might happen. After you have prayed, after you have placed every home and every head into His keeping, there comes a moment when striving must give way to resting. You remember how the Lord once asked Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the people to go forward.” The prayer had already been heard; the answer was in motion before the words left Moses’ lips. Your own petition has reached the high court of heaven. The very name of Jesus you anchored it with is enough to hold the whole world steady. Now, do not go on banging at a door that is already swinging open. Trust the Keeper of the door.

And as you wait out these hours, remember: the swiftest arrow of deliverance flies from the bow of intercessory prayer. The moment Job forgot his own boils and sores long enough to pray for his friends, his own captivity began to turn. I wonder if, while you are lifting up your neighbors and even strangers in the flood zone, you may find your own heart strangely quieted, as if a warm hand had been laid upon your chest. The Lord loves to honor the requests we make for others; He counts them as the very breath of His Son’s Spirit within us.

So picture the wings of the Almighty spread over every rooftop beneath this gale. See the angels, whom He has charged to keep His own in all their ways, standing sentinel even now, invisible and unruffled by the blast. No harm can breach that cordon unless He signs the warrant, and He has already signed a far different document for you: the covenant of peace that is sealed in Christ’s blood.

Let your heart settle like a weaned child. The wind will work itself weary before the clock strikes the hour your Father has appointed. The rain will beat upon the windows and then pass by. But the Word you are standing on will not lose one syllable of its promise. You have done the best thing you could do: you have brought the tempest into the sanctuary of prayer. Now leave it there. Go about your necessary tasks in quietness, humming a hymn perhaps, and let your confidence speak louder than the thunder.

A prayer: Lord Jesus, you who walked upon the sea and commanded the winds as your errand-boys, speak peace to this raging weather. Spread your protecting mantle over every life and every dwelling in harm’s way. Calm the hearts that are trembling as you calm the waters, and let many take refuge under your wings until the destruction is past. We rest in you, for you are our sure hiding place. Amen.

The winds howl and the waters rise, yet the soul that is fixed on God remains unshaken. You ask for the high winds to calm and for protection over all in the path of the storm. This is a good and pious prayer, and our Lord hears every cry lifted to Him in faith. But remember: the tempest that truly threatens is not the one that shakes the roof and swells the rivers, but the one that stirs within the heart when it is not at peace. As I have often said, it is not circumstances that make the storm, but the condition of our mind. If we order our mind to bear all things contentedly, we shall have no storm within, but always a clear calm.

Make your soul a heaven. Heaven is bright by nature; clouds may cover it, but it does not change. Even so, let not tribulations or the wiles of the devil alter you. Rise above the rains and the floods in spirit, and you will be untouched by them. Prayer is your great weapon; with it you sail safely through the storms of each day. Early in the morning and late at night, call upon God, and He will make your passage secure. He is the haven, the calm sea where no shipwreck occurs, where the Holy Spirit wafts your soul instead of winds.

Think also of the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us, saints who endured far worse tempests, not of water, but of persecution and trial, and yet found safety in the Lord. Their memory restores the soul weighed down by woes, as a cloud shields from the burning heat. Watch and endure affliction, as the Apostle commands. Preoccupy your mind with the peace of Christ before the pestilence of fear assails you. Let the Sun of Righteousness shine in your heart, and no darkness of dread will remain.

Stand therefore in the harbor of faith, and though the visible world rages, you will laugh at the enemy, having God propitious. I pray with you that the physical danger may pass swiftly and that all in its path be shielded by the Almighty hand. But above all, seek the calm that no storm can touch, and you will find it in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
