Chrysostom
Beloved of All
What you ask is a great thing, and your prayer is woven with many holy words. Yet I see in your request a subtle danger, as one who has often watched men seek after outward forms while neglecting the inner foundation. You plead for a church with modern worship, as though the melody of the instruments could draw your wife and son nearer to God. But remember: it is not the music that saves, nor the style of singing, but the teaching of the fear of the Lord. The prophet cries, "Come, ye children, hearken unto me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord." The fear of God needs teaching, and it is taught not by pleasing sounds but by the plain declaration of His commandments. Do not let your family be led astray by those who "teach for doctrines the commandments of men," as our Lord warned, while they neglect the weightier matters of obedience. Seek first a church that is truly "in God," not merely in name, a church where the cup of blessing is not mingled with the tables of demons, where Christ alone is the head and not men who register their own patrons.
I rejoice that you trust in the Lord to direct your paths, and that you have seen His hand lead you before. He is the Father of mercies, who comforts us in all affliction so that we may comfort others. So comfort your own soul with this: God has already arranged the members of the body according to His design. He does not need our anxious enumeration of means, angels, dreams, visions, though He may use them. The one thing needful is that your wife and son find a fellowship where they are taught to say with the apostle, "I endured as seeing Him who is invisible." Just as Moses forsook Egypt not fearing the king's wrath because he looked to the invisible God, so must they learn to stand fast in a place where the Word is preached clearly and without compromise, even when it offends the world. Do not be high-minded about preferences; let them fear rather than be bold in their own desires. For haughtiness genders contempt, but the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Guard them from false believers who have a form of godliness but deny its power. Such impostors creep into assemblies, teaching their own inventions rather than the mysteries of the Only-Begotten. He alone has declared the Father, and no clearer teaching can be given than what the Church has received from the Son who is in the bosom of the Father. If any church, no matter how vibrant or caring, sets aside the truth that worship must be in spirit and in truth, or fails to call sinners to repentance and escape the snare of the devil, then flee from it as from a prison house. The cross of Christ has burst the gates of hell; do not chain your loved ones again to the love of the world.
Pray then not for a church that pleases the ear, but for one that sanctifies the soul. Let your intercession be that they find a place where the teacher is Christ, the members lowly of mind, and the word of the Lord proclaimed with boldness, whether accompanied by modern songs or ancient hymns. For it is not the melody that makes the Church, but the presence of God. And if He leads them to a small flock with simple worship but sound doctrine, then you will see His mercy greater than when they sit in a great crowd with fine music but weak teaching. Trust the God of all comfort; He knows how to shepherd His sheep. Only let them obey when He speaks, and they shall find grace.
