What happened at youth group

Some people didn't come today, so i pray that they are alright.

2 of the local police officers came, so i pray that God encounters them both in a way that is so clear that it's not a coincidence.

Somehow the conversation got to "sacrificing to the bbq gods" or something like that, was I supposed to say something to that? Obviously I didn't think it was funny. I pray that they realise these little jokes are what God hears & for them to have fear of the Lord, I also need fear of the Lord, as I put my fear of man above Him.

There was a bit of conflict as of the water fight. Some broke the rules, as some of them squirted water at people in the bbq area, rather than the field bit for the water fight. I pray that there is calm & that the Holy Spirit fills them & that His presence is felt.

Neither me, nor the other volunteers, brought up about Jesus. There may have been an opportunity that I didn't take up or I didn't see, same for the other volunteers, but fear of the Lord is what we need.

Other than that it was good, the food was good & there was laughter. I pray for the Lord to work mightily in my community & my church, I pray for a Christian revival in my community as well as the world.

We hear your heart and share in your concerns about the events at youth group. It’s clear you love these young people and desire to see them grow in their relationship with the Lord. Let’s bring these matters before God together, seeking His wisdom and intervention.

First, we lift up those who were absent today. We pray for their safety and well-being, asking the Lord to draw them close and protect them from any harm or distraction that may have kept them away. May they be strengthened in their faith and encouraged to return, knowing they are valued and loved by God and this community. "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." (Psalm 145:18)

We also pray for the two police officers who attended. Father, we ask that You encounter them in a way that leaves no doubt this was Your doing. Open their hearts to Your truth and let them see Your love in a tangible way. May they come to know Jesus as their Savior and Lord, and may their lives be transformed by Your grace. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes." (Romans 1:16) We pray they would experience Your presence so powerfully that they cannot ignore it.

Regarding the conversation about "sacrificing to the BBQ gods," we understand your concern, and we agree that such jokes can trivialize the holiness of God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and it’s important to address even seemingly small things that dishonor Him. "The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7) We pray that the Holy Spirit convicts hearts gently but firmly, leading these young people to a deeper reverence for God. We also ask for forgiveness for our own fear of man, may we always prioritize Your glory over the approval of others. Help us to speak up with love and boldness when opportunities arise to redirect conversations toward You.

The conflict during the water fight is a reminder of how quickly sin can disrupt peace, even in playful settings. We pray for the Holy Spirit to fill each heart, bringing calm and unity. May they recognize the importance of respecting boundaries and honoring one another, even in fun. "If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men." (Romans 12:18) Let Your presence be so evident that they desire to live in a way that pleases You.

It’s understandable that you feel convicted about not mentioning Jesus during the gathering. While we don’t always have to force spiritual conversations, we must remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. The fear of the Lord is indeed what we all need, it compels us to live righteously and share the gospel boldly. "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7) We pray for courage and discernment to seize every opportunity to point others to Christ. May we not miss the moments You orchestrate for Your glory.

We rejoice with you in the laughter and fellowship that took place, these are gifts from God. But we also join you in praying for revival in your community and beyond. Father, we ask that You move mightily in our churches and neighborhoods, drawing hearts to repentance and faith. Let Your Spirit sweep through our land, awakening souls to the truth of the gospel. "If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14) May we see a great harvest of souls and a renewed passion for Your kingdom.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your will for these young people and our community. Lord, we ask that You protect those who were absent and draw them back to fellowship. Encounter the police officers in a way that leaves no doubt of Your love and power. Convict us all of the fear of the Lord, that we may honor You in every word and action. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, bringing peace where there is conflict and unity where there is division. Give us boldness to speak Your name and share Your truth without fear. We long for revival, Lord, revival in our hearts, our churches, and our world. Use us as vessels to bring glory to Your name. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

We hear the weight you’re carrying about the joking and the sense that you missed a moment to speak of Jesus. It’s a good sign when our conscience is tender about God’s honor, and your own acknowledgement that you need a greater fear of the Lord than fear of people is a prayer He loves to answer. So many of us know that struggle personally. Growth in boldness often happens little by little, not in a single perfect comeback. The fact that you didn’t laugh at the “bbq gods” joke already said something important; you weren’t joining in. In the moment, even a simple, warm redirection like “Well, we can just thank the real God who gave us the food” can plant a seed without sparking a debate.

Maybe the single most practical step right now is to talk with one or two of the other volunteers about how you might back each other up next time. You’re not alone in this, and brainstorming together, or even role-playing a gentle response, can make those moments less intimidating. Trust that God sees your heart, and He can use even your silent loyalty.

Let’s pray together, lifting up the whole evening and your heart.

Lord Jesus, we thank You for this youth leader’s sensitivity to You. Deepen in them a holy, healthy fear of You that puts the fear of others in its proper place. Give them and the other volunteers wisdom and quiet courage to speak Your name naturally. We ask You to watch over the young people who weren’t there; guard them in body and soul. Let those two police officers encounter You so unmistakably that they cannot dismiss it as coincidence. Bring calm to the group after the water fight, and fill that space with Your Spirit. And we join the prayer for revival, start in that youth group and overflow into the whole community. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The spirit that would jest about sacrificing to false gods, even in jest, reveals a lightness concerning the Most High that betrays the natural heart. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and where that holy awe is absent, the tongue will run upon vanity. You did well to be grieved rather than amused, yet the question presses, "Was I supposed to say something?" Happy is the man who fears always, and fears concerning his holy things. A solemn word, gently given, might have checked the idle speech and turned the conversation toward the living God who is not to be named alongside idols. Yet if your silence sprang from the fear of man, that is a snare indeed. Confess it, and ask for that godly boldness which trembles only before the Most High.

Concerning the officers who came among you, I have known the Lord meet with men in the very midst of their ordinary duties, and write His message in the book they are accustomed to read. He who drew the wise men from the East by a star they understood can surely cause these men to behold a greater light. Pray on, for the arm of the Lord is not shortened. He is able to make such an impression upon their souls that they shall know it is no coincidence, but the beckoning of the living God.

As for the conflict that arose in the water play, it is a small thing in itself, yet these little breaches of rule often disclose the larger disorder within. The fear of death, though born of sin, restrains many from greater evil, and a healthy fear of consequence is used by God in the economy of human society. Yet the Holy Spirit alone can produce that inward calm and the presence of God which subdues the unruly will. Pray for that, and watch for the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

That you and the other volunteers did not speak plainly of Jesus weighs upon your conscience, and this is a sign of grace. The man who begins to consider God, and to grieve over missed opportunities, is not far from God's heart. Yet do not sink into a slavish fear that paralyzes. The Master did not come to leave you in bondage to your failures, but to deliver you from the fear that has torment. Lay hold of this truth: "Fear not, thou worm Jacob... I will help thee, saith the Lord." Your very sense of weakness is the preparation for His strength. The question of fear cries, "Will He plead against me with His great power?" but the answer of faith sings, "No, He will put strength in me."

Go forward, then, with a holy fear that is not dread of punishment, but a reverent love that desires to honor the Lord in all things. Pray mightily for that revival you long to see, for the Lord is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think. And remember, when the storm of doubt arises and you feel your own insignificance, your confidence shall be your strength, for your Father is at the helm.

You speak of what happened, and you pray for fear of the Lord. This is the very root of what you need. For nothing is so apt to dissolve love and boldness as fear of man, and a suspicion of treachery against God's honor. When your heart pricked you about that silly talk of sacrificing to idols, that was the seed of compunction. Do not despise it. Why did you not speak? Because, as you confess, you put the fear of man above the fear of Him who hears every idle word. Ask yourself: if Ananias had let fear of Saul's reputation silence him, what would have become of that chosen vessel? But the Lord relieved him of his fear, saying, "He is blind, and prayeth." See then your own condition. You saw a table spread with talk of demons, however light it seemed to them, and you kept silent. That jest was a cup offered at the table of demons, and you know you cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. When such things pass the lips, they give an occasion of stumbling. The Gentile derides, the weaker brother is offended, and the name of the Lord is not hallowed among you.

Yet do not let shame over missed opportunity become another snare. You see clearly now that we did not receive a spirit of fear, that we should shrink from exertion, but a spirit of power and love. This is of grace, but not merely grace, it comes when we first perform our own parts. The work of the Lord requires workmen who work, even as Paul labored. The boldness to speak the word without fear often comes, as it did for the brethren, from seeing the bonds and struggles of others. Your own trembling confession here gives courage to another. And do not think the opportunity has passed like water spilt on the ground. The Spirit that pricks your heart now is the same who can pierce theirs. For what reason did Paul use that phrase, Maran atha? "Our Lord is come." He condescended to come down thus far, and are we still in the same state, clinging to our little jests and our little rages in a water fight? The common Lord of all has come; this should make the unruly tremble and the silent speak.

Pray then, as you do, for those officers. For it was not meet that Paul should be induced by men, but only by Christ Himself, and so too it may be with them. He who said, "Behold, he prayeth," sees the heart. Pray that He would prick their hearts and give the spirit of compunction, that His encounter be so clear it cannot be accounted coincidence. And for those who broke the rules and stirred up conflict, that work of the flesh is no light thing. The cup of wrangling is not the cup of calm. Pray that the calm which stilled the sea, which bore Christ's very body on its back, would fill them, and that His presence would bring not a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power to choose peace. This world’s laughter passes, but the fruit of the Spirit remains. Let there be nothing wild, nothing harsh. For the young plants that are fit for fruit, the olive plants, are those that come together not in vain or by chance, but with fear and reverence.

Behold then the goodness and severity of God. The blessings you pray for, the Christian revival in your community, do not abide unmovable if you turn listless. Your fear of man must be shaken off. The Lord has been good to give you this very sorrow; now let it conceive and bring forth the spirit of salvation. May He who pricketh the heart pierce yours in the depth, that through His fear you conceive boldness. And then you, and they, shall come near with confidence, even to that heavenly table, and be counted worthy of the kingdom.
