And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments. - Luke 23:34 Devotional: A South African woman stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer ### acknowledged his responsibility in the death of her son. Along with others, he had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. He and the others partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes. Eight years later, ### and others arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, ### came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured gasoline over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were "Forgive them." Now ### stood awaiting judgment. South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. "Three things," she said. "I want Mr. ### to take me to the place where they burned my husband's body. I would like to gather up the dust and give him a decent burial. "Second, Mr. ### took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ### and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him. "Third, I would like Mr. ### to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real." As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, ### fainted. Someone began singing "Amazing Grace." Gradually everyone joined in. Forgiveness is sometimes hard for us to give, but I would think that most of us have not had to forgive someone like this woman did. If she could find it in her heart to forgive...what is stopping you Prayer: Father God, remove the hardness of my heart so that I can forgive those that have wronged me. Please open the hearts of those I have wronged and allow them to forgive me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We stand in awe of the profound example of forgiveness demonstrated by this courageous woman from ###. Her story echoes the very heart of Christ, who, even in the midst of unimaginable suffering, cried out, "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they do" (Luke 23:34). Her ability to extend grace to those who committed such heinous acts against her family is a testament to the transformative power of God’s love working within her.

Yet, we must also acknowledge the weight of your prayer request. The struggle to forgive is real, and the pain of betrayal, hurt, or injustice can feel insurmountable. But Scripture is clear: forgiveness is not optional for those who follow Christ. Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors" (Matthew 6:12). He even warned that if we refuse to forgive others, our Heavenly Father will not forgive us (Matthew 6:15). This is not to condemn, but to remind us that unforgiveness is a prison of our own making, one that keeps us bound to bitterness, anger, and separation from God’s peace.

We also recognize that forgiveness does not mean excusing evil or pretending harm never occurred. The woman in this story still sought truth and justice through the ###. Forgiveness is not about minimizing sin; it is about releasing the offender into God’s hands, trusting Him to be the righteous Judge (Romans 12:19). It is about freeing ourselves from the burden of carrying hatred, so that we may walk in the freedom Christ died to give us.

If you are struggling to forgive, we encourage you to meditate on the cross. Jesus endured the worst humanity could inflict, betrayal, mockery, torture, and death, yet He chose forgiveness. His grace is sufficient for you, too. Lay your pain at His feet and ask Him to soften your heart. Remember, forgiveness is a process, and it may require daily surrender to God’s will. But with each step, He will strengthen you.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, yet full of hope in Your power to heal and restore. Lord, we confess that unforgiveness has taken root in our lives, and we ask for Your forgiveness for holding onto bitterness, resentment, and anger. We surrender these burdens to You now. Soften our hearts, as You softened the heart of the woman in this story, so that we may extend the same grace You have shown us. Help us to see those who have wronged us through Your eyes, broken people in need of Your love and redemption.

Father, we also ask for the courage to seek forgiveness from those we have hurt. Reveal to us any areas where we have caused pain, and give us the humility to make amends. Let Your love flow through us, breaking the chains of unforgiveness and filling us with Your peace.

We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who redeems even the darkest of circumstances. Just as You brought beauty from the ashes of this woman’s life, we trust You to bring beauty from our pain. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to love as You have loved us. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus Christ, we urge you to consider the truth of His sacrifice. He is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), and it is only through His name that we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you feel the Holy Spirit drawing you to Him, we encourage you to confess your sins, repent, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior. He is waiting with open arms, ready to forgive and restore you.

What an incredibly powerful story of forgiveness and grace. We can hardly imagine the depth of pain this woman endured, yet her response was one of profound love and mercy. It humbles us to realize how often we hold onto bitterness for far smaller slights. Her words echo Jesus' teaching that true freedom comes when we release others from the debt of our anger, just as He released us from our sins through His sacrifice.

We want to encourage you, if unforgiveness has taken root in your heart, it’s not a sign of weakness to ask God for help in letting go. In fact, it’s an act of courage to admit we can’t do it alone. Jesus understands every wound, and He longs to carry that burden for you. You don’t have to force yourself to feel forgiveness right away; sometimes, it begins simply with a prayer for the willingness to forgive.

May God meet you in that space of surrender and fill you with His peace that surpasses all understanding.

In Jesus’ name, we pray.
