War and Starvation

Thousands of Ukrainians are starving to death in a frontline city which has been cut off by Vladimir Putin. All roads leading away from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine have been littered with mines by Russian soldiers, trapping 2,000 people inside. Constant Russian drone attacks and artillery shelling have made it impossible to deliver essential food and medicine supplies, mortally endangering the remaining population which includes around 50 children. In desperation, residents are attempting to flee via the 'Death Road' to the southern city of Skadovsk. But the 62-mile route is life-threatening: the road is full of mines and Russian drones target anything that moves. Those who die are no longer buried, because even the mortuary has been bombed. Bodies lie in cellars or on the streets, where, according to witnesses, they are being gnawed at by dogs. Civilians are increasingly worried about how they will survive the winter without regular food deliveries, medicine, electricity, or reliable transport The local hospital is deprived of basic medical supplies, electricity, and running water, and is barely able to operate Around 6,000 people may remain in Oleshky and the surrounding area, including about 200 children. Please pray for this emergency situation.

We join you in lifting up this desperate and heartbreaking emergency before the Lord together in Jesus' name, for our hearts are heavy for the people trapped in ### and the surrounding area.

We are grieved to hear of thousands cut off by mines, of relentless drone attacks and shelling, of children starving and without medicine, of a hospital without supplies, electricity or water, of bodies left unburied and of families forced to risk the death road to survive the winter. God sees every suffering soul and He is not distant from this affliction. He tells us the Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit Psalm 34:18 and that He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble Psalm 46:1. He also reminds us to defend the weak and fatherless, maintain the rights of the afflicted and oppressed Isaiah 1:17 and to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves Proverbs 31:8.

We rebuke the evil of this war and the violence being inflicted upon innocent civilians. The Lord hates violence and the shedding of innocent blood Psalm 11:5, and He will bring justice for those who afflict the helpless. We pray that those who are perpetrating this siege and targeting anything that moves would be convicted, restrained, and brought to repentance, for God desires that all would turn from evil and live Ezekiel 33:11. We pray against every scheme that would starve children, block mercy, and destroy hospitals and homes.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share why that is so important to us. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are reconciled to God and can come boldly before His throne of grace. We encourage you to place your trust fully in Him.

We pray together now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, and we lift up the roughly ### people still trapped in ### and the surrounding villages, including about ### children. Lord, You know each one by name. You see their hunger, their cold, their fear, and their wounds. We ask You to make a way where there seems to be no way, to open roads for food, medicine, clean water, electricity and medical care to reach them. Protect those who attempt to flee along that mined road from drones and shelling, and guide their feet to safety. Comfort those who have lost loved ones and are unable even to bury them with dignity, and have mercy on the little ones who are most vulnerable. Strengthen the doctors and nurses who labor without supplies, and sustain the civilians facing winter without heat or transport. We ask You to restrain the hands of the aggressors, to bring an end to this siege, and to let Your peace which passes all understanding guard hearts even in the midst of terror Isaiah 41:10. Let the nations and those with ability to help not turn away, but remember Your word that whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers, you did for me Matthew 25:40. We pray for a just and lasting peace, for the healing of this land, and that even in this darkness Your love and provision would shine brightly. We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17 for these precious people, to cry out for their daily bread Matthew 6:11 and for God to pour out His light upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death Luke 1:79. May the Lord keep you steadfast as you intercede, and may He show His mercy and deliverance in the days ahead.

We were so burdened to read what you shared about ###. Two thousand people trapped, children among them, mines on every road, drones overhead, a hospital without power or medicine, and winter coming. The images of bodies left unburied and families trying that dangerous road to ### are hard to hold.

Thank you for bringing this before the Lord instead of looking away. It is a lot to carry, and it is understandable if you feel helpless, angry or weary as you pray.

We are joining you in prayer for these neighbors by name before God, even though we do not know their names. We are asking for safe delivery of food and medicine, for protection especially for the children, for those trying to flee to be spared, and for strength for medical workers trying to serve with almost nothing. We are also praying for an opening for aid and for comfort for those grieving.

If you are able, one steady way to help beyond prayer is to support a trusted Christian relief agency already working in southern ###, and to keep praying in small, specific ways rather than trying to hold it all at once. And please be gentle with your own heart as you stay with this story. Talk with others, rest, and bring your own sorrow to the Lord too.

Father, in Jesus name we lift the people of ### and the surrounding villages to you. Have mercy. Provide bread and medicine, keep the children safe, make a way where there seems to be no way, and sustain them through winter. Comfort those who mourn and guide those who can bring help. Amen.

We come together with burdened hearts having heard of the great distress in ### and the surrounding villages where thousands are cut off, hungry, without medicine, without light and water, with children among them, with the roads sown with mines and the heavens filled with drones, with bodies left unburied and a hospital barely able to stand. In such testing times we would remember the truth of God's salvation, that it is not a temporary work, that it never fades, and that it is real in its constancy.

Our best pleas lie within the compass of God's Character and God's promises, and therefore we beseech the throne of grace. O Lord, whose thoughts are not our thoughts and whose ways are not our ways, whose ways are holiness and purity, have mercy upon these afflicted people. Thou art patient and long suffering and delightest to pardon, and Thy Word which is Thy thoughts and ways spoken shall never be broken to those who trust Thee.

As long as there remains hope we are bound to pray for peace, yea even in the time of war to cry that Thou wouldst send us peace in our days. We abhor war itself, and we pray that Thou wouldst restrain the hands that sow mines and send drones against the defenseless, that Thou wouldst open a way where there seems no way, that bread and medicine and clean water might reach the hungry and the sick, that the children might be kept safe, that those who must flee by that perilous road of some ### miles to ### might be hidden under the pavilion of Thy sovereignty and the tabernacle of Thy sacrifice, beyond the reach of their adversaries, where their feet shall not slide upon the rock of Thine immutability.

We remember that Christ our perfect Savior was made perfect through sufferings, that suffering was the penalty of sin which He bore, and that He suffered being tempted, yet without rebellion, that He might succor those who are tempted and afflicted. Look, O tender Savior, upon those who suffer outside the camp, who bear cold and hunger and fear, and let them know Thy sympathy who hast entered fully into human trial. Grant that many there may see God's Salvation, not only the Worker of salvation but Salvation itself in Jesus Christ, that in Him they may find that blessed doctrine of substitution, Believe and live, and so receive a real pardon through a real atonement, a salvation Divine from top to bottom, Divine in the beginning, Divine in the carrying on and Divine in the concluding.

We ask that Thou wouldst sustain the physicians and helpers who labor without supplies or power or running water, that Thou wouldst comfort those who mourn their dead left in cellars and streets without burial, that Thou wouldst preserve the little ones, some ### within the city and some ### round about among the ### who remain, and keep them through the winter that now threatens without regular food or medicine or electricity or reliable transport. Provide what man cannot provide, for Thy thoughts of mercy are far above ours, and Thy grace can bring deliverance where our eyes see only desolation.

Grant to all who hear of this sorrow a heart to intercede without ceasing, to declare Thy wondrous works from youth to age, and to wage that holy war against error and sin which alone brings true peace among men. Hasten the day when our eyes shall see Thy Salvation perfected, when bodies shall be made like His glorious body, no more weak and suffering.

Hear us, O God, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Thy Salvation, in whom we plead. Amen.
