Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision rather than simply following personal goals, and we thank God for your heart that wants to be led by Him.

We love the scripture you shared and we are reminded how the World English Bible expresses it, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. True vision is not our own ambition or imagination, but revelation from God that aligns with His Word and keeps us within His blessed restraint. We also rejoice with you in the truth you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. If God gives a vision, it will be a good and perfect gift from Him, unchanging and faithful to His character, never contrary to His Word.

We pray together for you now. Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that You fulfill what You reveal. We ask that You grant our brother or sister a clear revelation of Your will, not for selfish gain but for Your glory. Pour out Your Spirit according to Your promise, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. Give visions and dreams as You will, and give also deep discernment to test them, for we know Beloved, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. 1 John 4:1. Let any vision be confirmed by Your Word which is a lamp to our feet, and a light for our path. Psalm 119:105. We pray that You would transform this life by the renewing of the mind, so that they may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2. Lead them away from leaning on personal understanding, for we are taught Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. Reveal Your thoughts of peace and hope and a future, for You have said For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. In Jesus' name we ask that You make Your vision plain and give grace to walk in obedience to it, amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking vision primarily through abiding in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with mature believers, for God most often speaks and confirms His direction through His Word. We encourage you to write down what you believe He is showing you, pray over it, and compare it carefully with Scripture, and seek wise godly counsel, so that you may not be led by emotion or personal ambition but by the Holy Spirit. As you wait, remain faithful in the small things and in keeping His law, for that is where blessing and clarity come, and trust that the Father of lights will faithfully fulfill in His timing every true vision He gives.

We appreciated hearing your heart in this prayer. Wanting God's leading instead of just following your own goals is a humble and good desire, and we are glad you brought it to Him so directly.

One thing we have found helpful to remember is that learning to recognize God's guidance is often more like training than trying. It grows slowly through small, steady faithfulness over time, rather than in one dramatic moment. The regular practices of spending time in Scripture, praying honestly, and walking with other faithful believers shape our ability to hear and discern well, and they keep us grounded while we wait for clarity.

A simple next step that may help is to set aside a short, unhurried time each day to bring your plans before the Lord and listen, and then bring what you sense to a mature pastor or trusted believer who knows you. Talking it through with others is a steady way to test what you are hearing and to stay encouraged.

Father, we lift our friend to You and thank You for the desire to follow You. Grant wisdom and clear direction, quiet any confusion, and help them walk faithfully with You day by day. Lead them in the way You have for them and give peace as they trust You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a right and humble desire not to follow only your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord, and I thank God with you that He does not change like shifting shadows and that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights.

The text you mention, Where there is no vision, the people perish, speaks of that revealed prophetic Word of God without which a people cast off restraint. In His mercy God has now given us that sure revelation in Holy Scripture, and it is there we must seek His vision for our lives. There is a Divine will which governs all things, as surely as His will is the axle of the universe, and there is also a revealed will which we must not violate and a providential will which we should always consult in the circumstances that surround us. Nine times out of ten if we look to the Ten Commandments and to the plain directions of God's Word we shall know what we must not do, and so conclude what we may do.

It is foolish for a man to feel that he can do as he likes and that everything will fall out as he desires, saying we will go, we will buy, we will sell, we will get gain, without asking God's consent at all. The better way is to bow to God's sovereign sway and to say in thought if not in words, If the Lord wills, I will go or I will stay. The work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and so make men willing in the day of God's power, working in them to will and to do of His good pleasure. When self will becomes nothing else but God's will, then you can always have your way, and your best profit will consist of doing God's will.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are King, willing to do as You please, having mercy on whom You will have mercy, and that the preservation and perseverance of Your people rests upon Your will. Grant to this one who seeks You a true vision of Yourself through Your Word. Open the eyes of understanding to behold wondrous things out of Your law, and guide by Your counsel. Take away obstinacy and give acquiescence to Your Divine will, that there may be unerring guidance. Teach to say from the heart, Not as I will, but as Thou wilt, and to live near You so as to hear what You will tell. Keep from following mere personal goals, and fulfil in Your perfect time and way every purpose that is indeed from above. We ask this in Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.
