Vision

Your desire to be led by God rather than by your own personal goals is good and pleasing to Him, and I am glad you shared it.

The verse you mentioned is often understood as speaking about personal dreams or goals, but its meaning is different. Where it says where there is no vision the people perish, the word for vision means the revealing of God, His Word and His counsel to His people. Where that revelation is not heard and obeyed, people cast off restraint and wander. The answer, then, is not necessarily to seek a supernatural sight, but to stay under the authority of what God has already spoken in Scripture. That is how you will know His direction and not perish by following your own way.

In the Bible a dream and a vision are similar but distinct. A dream comes in sleep, a vision comes while a person is awake and suddenly begins to see what God is showing. Because God is outside of time and space, in a vision a person can be shown things that have not yet happened in our time as though they were happening now, or be shown things happening in another place. We see this with John who was shown the day of the Lord and the coming kingdom, with Daniel who alone saw what was shown to him while those with him only felt a great trembling, with Isaiah who saw the throne of God, and with Paul who in the night at Troas saw a man from Macedonia pleading for help and immediately understood God was calling him there. Peter also needed a vision repeated three times before he understood, and then the Spirit spoke clearly to explain what it meant.

Yet not everyone is led in that way, and God does not require a vision for you to know His will. Many are led simply by a deep and settled desire that God Himself places in the heart, a strong urge to walk in a certain path of obedience and service. That is a real call as well. If God chooses to give a vision, that is His prerogative and we can be open to it, but we should not seek an experience as the foundation for our faith.

Faith that is built on an experience is on dangerous ground, because an experience can fade, or a contrary experience can come and shake it. Faith built on the Word of God never wavers, because the Word never changes. You quoted it well, every good and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. His Word is the fact upon which we stand, and it remains true when feelings and impressions shift.

So my prayer for you is not primarily that you would have a sight in the night, but that God would give you a deeper love and understanding of His Word, and a heart that speaks and obeys it with conviction. As you give yourself to Scripture, the Holy Spirit will make His will clear, whether through the steady counsel of the Word, through the desires He forms in you, or, if He so wills, through a dream or vision. In any case He will confirm His leading and give you peace to follow it.

Father, in the name of Jesus we thank You that You do not change and that Your Word endures. We ask that You fill this dear one with wisdom and understanding of Your will as found in Scripture. Place Your desires in their heart, guide their steps away from mere personal ambition and into Your perfect plan, and help them to trust not in a passing experience but in Your unchanging truth. Give them a clear knowledge of Your love, Your joy and Your peace, and lead them day by day in obedience to Christ. Amen.
