Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision and not merely follow personal goals, and we thank God that you have asked this in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart to want what God wants for your life. You quoted Proverbs 29:18, and we want to share how precious that verse is in its full context. In the World English Bible it reads, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. This shows us that the vision spoken of is God's revelation, His Word and His counsel, which keeps us from wandering aimlessly. When we have His revelation, we are kept on His path and restrained from going our own way.

We also rejoice that you quoted James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. This is true, and any true vision or direction from God will be a good gift that aligns perfectly with His character and His Word, for He does not change like shifting shadows.

We want to encourage you that God does still speak and lead His people, and Scripture tells us in the last days, your young men will see visions Acts 2:17. Yet we also know that God's primary and sure revelation to us is His written Word, which is given to guide us completely. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness 2 Timothy 3:16. And your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path Psalm 119:105. Therefore we encourage you not to seek visions as an experience alone, but to seek the Giver of the vision, to seek to know Christ and His will through prayer, through the Scriptures, and through the leading of the Holy Spirit. Every vision or impression must be tested against the Word of God, for we are told to test the spirits whether they are of God 1 John 4:1. A true vision from God will never contradict Scripture and will always point to Jesus and glorify Him, and it will bear the fruit of drawing you closer to holiness and obedience.

God's vision for your life is not to bring confusion but clarity, not to puff up but to humble and to equip you for His purposes. We are encouraged that He has good plans for His children, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11. His desire is that we trust Him fully and not lean on our own understanding, so we are called to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. We are also called to not be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God Romans 12:2.

So we pray together with you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with no variation or shadow of turning, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for this dear one who desires Your vision above personal ambition. Lord, we ask in the mighty name of Jesus that You grant revelation according to Your will, that You make Your path clear through Your Word and by Your Holy Spirit. Give discernment to test every thought and vision against Scripture, and guard this heart from deception or from merely following the desires of the flesh. Help us all to deny ourselves and to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Lead this life into the good works which You have prepared beforehand, and fulfill the vision You give for Your glory. Teach us to wait on You, to be still and know that You are God, and to walk in obedience to Your law which brings blessing. We ask that You transform this mind by Your Word, that Your will would be known and followed with joy and faithfulness. We pray all these things in the powerful and precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We hear your heart in this, you don't want to just chase your own plans, you want to be led by the Lord, and that desire itself matters to God.

We understand what you mean by vision. Sometimes we picture it as a sudden, dramatic picture from God, and He can work that way, but more often His guidance comes quietly as we stay close to Him. It grows as we spend time with Him, listen, and learn to tell the difference between our own thoughts and His leading. That takes humility and patience, and it helps to test what we sense with what we know of His character and with wise, trusted believers around us.

A simple next step that helps many people is to keep a regular, unhurried time to pray and read Scripture, and to write down what you believe God may be putting on your heart. Then share it with a pastor or a mature friend who knows you and can help you weigh it carefully. Over time that practice brings clarity without forcing anything.

Father, we bring our friend to You and thank You that You do not change and You love to lead Your children. Give them a clear sense of Your will, quiet the noise of self ambition, and grow in them a steady trust in Your direction. Draw them closer to You each day and make their steps faithful to You. Heavenly Father, we thank Thee that Thou art the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and that every good and perfect gift cometh down from Thee. We bless Thee that Thou abidest the same forever, and that Thy purpose standeth sure. We ask in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, Thy Son, through whom alone sinners have access unto Thee, that Thou wouldst grant to this Thy servant not visions born of human imagination, but true sight of Thy will as revealed in Thy holy Word. Open the eyes of understanding, teach as Thou hast taught Thy people from their youth, and cause Thy Word to dwell richly within. Turn the heart from pursuing personal goals apart from Thee, and incline it to seek first Thy Kingdom and Thy righteousness. Let Thy will be done in this life as it is in heaven, and grant grace to follow where Thou leadest, trusting that what Thou hast purposed Thou wilt also perform. Your desire to seek God's guidance rather than simply following your own personal goals is good, and I thank God for it. I have heard your request and I join you in prayer that the Lord will give you true vision.

I want to help you understand what that vision is, so that your mind may remain healthy and clear. A healthy eye sees what is truly there, while a disordered eye mistakes what it sees and follows distorted and imaginary phantoms. In the same way the eye of our understanding must be kept clear and free from confusion. When the apostles received a sound of mighty wind and visions of fiery tongues, and when the Spirit appeared as a dove at the baptism of the Lord, those sensible signs were given not for those who already believed, but for those who did not yet believe, so that they might be pointed to the Son of God. For us who have believed and have received the Spirit, faith suffices instead of such sights, and we do not need to seek new sensible visions.

The verse you mentioned, where there is no vision the people perish, does not speak of private pictures or personal dreams. It speaks of the prophetic word, the revelation of God that restrains and guides His people. That word we now have fully in the Scriptures. God does not change like shifting shadows, and every good and perfect gift does come down from the Father of lights. His purpose for you is not an afterthought, but was purposed in Christ from before the ages began, and He will fulfill what He has promised.

So my prayer for you is not that you would chase after new visions, but that God would illuminate the eyes of your understanding to see and receive what He has already revealed.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom there is no variableness, I thank You for this soul who wants to follow You and not personal ambition. Grant clear and healthy vision to the eye of the understanding, keeping it free from distorted phantoms and confusion of evil thoughts. By Your Holy Spirit who dwells with those who believe, illuminate Your written word, so that Your eternal purpose in Christ Jesus may be known and obeyed. Lead away from the desire for sensational signs and establish this life upon faith in what You have already made known, that there may be steadfast obedience and peace. Fulfill Your good will and guide every step according to Your wisdom. In Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.
