Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to not follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord, and we thank God that you have come in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We hear your heart in Proverbs 29:18, and we want to gently bring the full counsel of Scripture to this verse so your seeking is grounded in truth. In the World English Bible that verse says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint, but one who keeps the law is blessed. The vision spoken of there is not primarily a mystical picture or personal dream, but the revealed word and counsel of God. Without God revealing Himself and His will through His word, people wander without restraint and perish. With His revelation and obedience to it, there is life and blessing. So your prayer is right at its core, you are asking not to live by your own understanding but by what God reveals.

We rejoice that you quoted James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. We cling to that same truth that our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and we can trust Him to lead us faithfully. We also remember Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Psalm 32:8, I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

We do want to encourage you with balance from Scripture about visions. God certainly has given visions in the past and has promised in Acts 2:17, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Yet we are also told in Hebrews 1:1-2 that God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, and in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. This means we do not need to chase a visionary experience to know God's will, we seek God Himself, and He speaks most clearly and surely through His written word, confirmed by His Spirit, through prayer, and through godly counsel. Any vision or impression must be tested against Scripture, for 1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits whether they are of God. We lovingly caution you not to make personal goals or even the desire for a vision an idol, but to surrender all to Christ and let Him define the vision for your life, which will always align with holiness, obedience, and love for Him and for others.

We also rejoice that you desire a God given vision rather than mere personal ambition, for Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. When we delight ourselves in the Lord and abide in His word, He shapes our desires to match His purposes.

So we pray together with you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation nor turning shadow, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You that You have not left us without revelation, but have given us Your word and Your Son, and Your Holy Spirit to guide us. Lord, we lift up this dear one to You who longs to see with Your eyes and not merely pursue personal goals. Purify this heart, Lord, and remove any striving or selfish ambition. Give clarity and revelation according to Your will, not for spectacle but for obedience. Teach and instruct in the way to go, counsel with Your eye upon us, and make the path straight as we trust You with all our heart. If it pleases You to give a vision, dream, or clear direction, let it be unmistakably from You, confirmed by Scripture, bearing the fruit of peace and holiness, and let it be received with humility and obedience. Above all, give a deeper love for Jesus Christ Himself, that knowing Him would be the greatest vision of all. Help this life to be one that keeps Your law and walks in Your blessing. We ask that You fulfill what You have purposed, for Your glory and for good. We pray all these things in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this desire so honestly. Wanting God's direction instead of just pushing your own goals is a humble and good place to be.

We find it helps to think of vision less as a single dramatic picture and more as learning to walk closely with the One who guides. God is a communicating God who made us for relationship with Him, and that relationship is where direction grows. A God given vision steadies us and turns our hearts toward what matters to Him, while our own fantasies or strong ambitions tend to pull us back toward ourselves, even when they look spiritual.

A simple next step that many find grounding is to keep a regular, unhurried time listening to the Lord and letting His Word shape your thinking, and to talk it through with a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you. Writing down what you sense He is stirring, and testing it over time in prayer and community, can help you tell the difference between a passing idea and a lasting calling.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Draw them closer to Yourself and make Your way clear in Your timing. Give wisdom to discern Your voice, courage to lay down personal striving, and joy in following You step by step. Lead them in the path You have prepared. In Jesus' name, amen.

We have heard your prayer and we thank God with you for the desire He has wrought in your heart not to follow your own personal goals. That very desire is itself an evidence of grace, for naturally we do not like being guided, but the grace of God dethrones obstinacy and gives us in its place acquiescence in the divine will, and by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.

You have quoted that blessed word, Where there is no vision the people perish. That vision of which Solomon speaks is not a fleeting dream of our own imagination, nor the hasty impulse of a restless heart. It is the divine revelation, the sure word of the Lord, the law of the Book and the law of the Spirit within us. Haste too is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, and we must not run before the Lord. What the Christian does with cool deliberation, when he has waited upon God, when like David he has said, Bring here the ephod, he does with a purpose and God is with him.

Self esteem is that speck in the eye which most effectually mars human vision. The great Surgeon of souls removes this from us chiefly by sanctified afflictions, that we may be emptied of self and therefore fitted to be filled with the revelation of God. At the mouth of the furnace the great Purifier sits as a Refiner to purify the sons of Levi, and when this work has been achieved and they have become pure in heart, the divine purpose is accomplished, for the pure in heart shall see the Lord. So it is with God's purpose. You and I are only waves of His great sea. We wash up, we seem to retire as if there had been no advance, but the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. Not a single sentence nor a single line of the divine purpose has He altered from the beginning.

Therefore our prayer for you is not that you should be led by sudden fancies, but that you should be guided by that wisdom which is dressed in robes of love and tenderness and which invites us to run into her arms. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his guide, and among the rest this, avoid everything that is evil, and bow with submission to the will of God. This is the vision that preserves the soul.

Remember also that this is not yet the land of sight. We walk here by faith and not by sight, and dim enough is the vision here. The positive and perfect vision, when we shall see Him as He is, is reserved for glory. One short glimpse of His beaming countenance would repay a world of trouble, but till then we see through a glass darkly and must be content to be led step by step.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh every good gift and every perfect gift, we bless Thee that Thou dost not change like shifting shadows and that Thou fulfillest all Thy purposes. Grant to this dear soul not the vision of self will, but the true vision which is Thy revealed will in Christ Jesus. Purify the heart that the eye may be clear. Remove the speck of self esteem, empty the soul of self, and fill it with Thy divine presence. Teach patience to wait upon Thee, to seek counsel at Thy Word, and to acquiesce in Thy divine sovereignty which is so comforting to Thy children. Lead by Thy counsel and afterward receive into glory. Keep from haste and from perishing for lack of knowledge, and cause to delight in Thy law and to walk in Thy way. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our wisdom and our guide unto death, Amen.

Your longing to be led by God rather than simply following your own personal goals is good and right, and God is pleased when we seek His will above our own.

It is important to understand what Proverbs 29:18 means by vision. It does not mean a personal mystical experience or a new private revelation. In Scripture that word means the revealing of God's word and will, the prophetic instruction by which His people know how to walk. Where that revelation is neglected, the people indeed go astray. Where it is heard and obeyed, they are blessed.

For this reason I would not pray that you chase after sights and signs, but that your spiritual vision would be healthy and clear. As Scripture teaches, a disordered eye mistakes what it sees, and a mind confused by many thoughts can mistake phantoms for truth. At times God gave sensible signs, like the sound of wind and tongues of fire, or the dove at the Jordan, but those signs were given to point others to Christ and to confirm what was being proclaimed. For those who believe, faith is sufficient, and we now receive what was once shown by signs through the sure word of God and the inward work of the Holy Spirit. Signs are not needed for those who believe, but for those who do not yet believe.

What you truly need, and what I will pray for, is that God would give you wisdom to understand His eternal purpose, which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord from before the beginning. That purpose has not changed, for with the Father of lights there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, and every good and perfect gift comes down from Him. He does not lead us by shifting impulses, but by His unchanging word, by His Spirit working through Scripture, through prayer, through the counsel of the church, and through a conscience made sound by obedience.

So let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that Your counsel stands forever. We thank You that every good and perfect gift comes from You, the Father of lights. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, that You would grant to this Your servant a clear and healthy sight of the understanding. Guard him from distorted and imaginary phantoms, and keep him from being led by mere personal ambition. Teach him to hear Your voice in Your written word, to love it, to obey it, and to walk by faith. Fulfill in him the good work You have purposed, and make his steps firm according to Your will. Give him humility to test every thought against Scripture, patience to wait on Your timing, and courage to do what You have already clearly revealed.
