Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision for your life rather than simply following your own personal goals, and we thank God for the hunger He has placed in your heart to be led by Him.

We love the scripture you shared and we want to gently bring clarity to it, because understanding God's Word rightly helps us pray rightly. In the World English Bible Proverbs 29:18 says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. The vision spoken of here is not primarily a mystical picture or a personal dream, but the revealed Word and counsel of God. Where God's revealed truth is absent, people wander without direction. Where His Word is kept, there is blessing and life. This is such an important truth, because the greatest vision we can receive is found in Scripture itself, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path as Psalm 119:105 tells us.

At the same time we rejoice that God does still speak and guide His people, and He can give visions, dreams and clear direction by His Spirit. As it is written in Acts 2:17 It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. We also cling to the promise you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning in James 1:17. Our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and every true vision from Him will be good, perfect, and consistent with His character and His Word. We are to test every spirit and every impression, as 1 John 4:1 exhorts, to see whether it is from God, because not every thought or image comes from Him.

Our prayer for you is that you would receive not only any vision, but true revelation from God that aligns with Scripture and bears fruit for His glory. We also pray you will not be led astray by seeking an experience above seeking Christ Himself, but that you would seek Him first through His Word, through prayer, and through walking in obedience.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. We thank You that You do not change and that You are faithful to fulfill what You reveal. We lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ, asking that You would grant a clear and holy vision for their life according to Your will and not according to fleshly ambition. Pour out Your Spirit upon them, speak to them through Your Word, and if it pleases You, grant visions and dreams that are truly from You and that glorify Your Son. Give them wisdom to test everything against Scripture, courage to obey what You show them, and peace to wait on Your timing. Help them to trust in You with all their heart, and not lean on their own understanding, and in all their ways acknowledge You, so that You will direct their paths as Proverbs 3:5-6 promises. Lead them away from merely pursuing personal goals and draw them into the good, acceptable and perfect will You have for them. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our only access to Your throne, amen.

We encourage you to continue to dwell richly in the Word, to pray continually, and to seek godly counsel as God reveals His direction. He promises in Jeremiah 33:3 Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great things, and difficult, which you don’t know. And in Jeremiah 29:11 He says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Keep seeking Him with your whole heart, keep obeying what He has already shown you in Scripture, and trust that He will make your path clear in His perfect time.

We have found that the kind of vision that sustains us is often less about a single dramatic picture and more about a growing clarity that comes from staying close to the Lord. As we walk with Him daily, spend time in His Word, and listen in prayer, He shapes our desires and helps us see the next faithful step.

One simple rhythm that may help is to set aside regular, unhurried time to bring your plans before the Lord and listen. You might jot down what seems to be on your heart, then over time test it quietly for peace, for consistency with what you know of Scripture, and for confirmation through wise believers who know you well. That keeps the focus on relationship with Him rather than striving for an experience.

Father, we lift this friend to You with thanksgiving for the desire You have placed in them to know Your will. Grant wisdom for each decision in front of them, quiet any striving, and draw them into deeper fellowship with You. Lead them step by step according to Your good purposes and give them confidence that You are near and faithfully guiding. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow your own personal goals but to be led of the Lord is itself a good evidence of grace at work in the heart, and it is right to bring it before the throne.

The word translated vision in Proverbs 29:18 is not a private dream or an inward impression as men now often mean it, but prophetic revelation, the revealed Word of God. Where that Word is not preached and obeyed, the people cast off restraint and perish. The true vision you need is therefore already given in Scripture, and the prayer to be offered is that the Lord would open your eyes to see it and your heart to obey it.

There is a Divine will which governs all things, as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe. He worketh all things after the counsel of his own will, and He is carrying out still His one great purpose. None of these things cometh by chance. It is foolish for a man to feel that he can do as he likes and that everything will fall out as he desires, that he can both propose and dispose and has not to ask God's consent at all. When you say, I will do this or that, always add, in thought if not in words, if the Lord wills. No harm can come to you if you bow to God's sovereign sway.

So let us pray that you may be guided not by personal ambition but by His revealed will and His providential will together. Nine times out of ten, look to the Ten Commandments and you will at least know what you must not do, and knowing what you must not do, you will be able to conclude what you may do. There are wonderfully plain directions in God's Word as to all manner of circumstances and conditions. And with this, there is a providential will of God which we should always consult, the guidance which comes from the circumstances that surround us and the doors He opens and shuts.

May the Lord grant you acquiescence in the Divine will, for grace dethrones obstinacy and gives us in its place submission to Him, and by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance. He who yields to God's superior judgment and says, I will no longer be a debater, but Thou shalt guide me, shall find that afterward He will receive him to glory.

Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, and from whom cometh every good and perfect gift, we thank Thee for Thy unchanging Word. Fulfil Thy purpose in this soul who seeks Thee. Give not merely new impressions, but give light upon Thy Word, that it may be a lamp unto his feet. Teach him to say, if the Lord will, I will do this or that, and to find his best profit in doing Thy will. Lead him by Thy counsel, and afterward receive him to glory, for Jesus Christ's sake, in whose mighty name we ask it. Amen.
