Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We rejoice with you in your desire to seek vision from the Lord rather than simply following your own personal goals, and we join with you in prayer for this.

We love how you quoted Prov 29:18, and in the World English Bible it reads, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Prov 29:18. This shows us that true vision is not merely our own ambition or planning, but divine revelation from God that keeps us from wandering and anchors us in His law and His will. Without His revelation we lose restraint and direction, but when we keep His word we are blessed.

You also quoted so beautifully that every good gift is from the Father of lights, and we stand on that truth with you, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. We thank God with you that He does not change like shifting shadows and that what He begins He is faithful to fulfill. When God gives a true vision, He also gives the grace to bring it to pass in His timing.

We want to encourage you that while God still does give visions, as promised, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17, His primary and sure revelation to us is His written Word. Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Ps 119:105. Any vision we receive must align with Scripture and never contradict it, and we are to test all things against His Word. We encourage you not to seek visions above seeking the Giver of visions Himself, but to seek His face first, and He will make your path clear, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Prov 3:5-6.

We also encourage you to surrender your personal goals fully to Him, for His plans are higher than ours, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jer 29:11. When He gives you vision, write it down and pray over it and wait on Him, as it is written, Yahweh answered me, Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. Hab 2:2. Godly vision will always draw you closer to Christ, call you to holiness, and glorify Him, not merely fulfill self.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights who does not change, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We lift up this dear one to You in Jesus name and ask that You pour out Your wisdom and revelation upon them. Give them a clear, holy vision that is born of Your Spirit and rooted in Your Word, not from flesh or personal ambition. Help them to hear Your voice, to discern Your will, and to walk in obedience to it. Guard them from deception and from following empty goals, and lead them to lay down their own plans to embrace Yours. Make their path straight as they acknowledge You in all their ways, and fulfill in Your perfect timing the vision You place in their heart. Let their life bear fruit that remains and brings glory to You. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our access to Your throne, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this longing so honestly. Wanting God's direction instead of just pushing your own plans is a good and humble place to be.

We have found it helps to think of vision less as a sudden picture and more as a growing clarity about how God wants you to walk with Him and serve Him. Personal goals tend to pull us toward what feels impressive or urgent in the moment, while God's vision steadies us and gives a taste for what matters most to Him. That kind of clarity usually grows over time as we stay close to Him, not all at once.

One simple step that has helped many is to keep a regular, unhurried time to pray and listen, and then bring what you sense to Scripture and to a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you. Writing down what you are hearing and testing it with others can keep you from drifting into just following your own ideas, and it also keeps you accountable as you wait.

We are praying for you.

Father, thank You for this desire to follow You. Give our friend wisdom and quiet confidence as they seek You, help them to recognize Your leading and to walk faithfully in the next step You show. Guard their heart from striving and draw them closer to Jesus each day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing to be governed by the Lord rather than by your own personal goals is itself a good and gracious desire, and it is one which the Spirit of God must have wrought in you. For as we have often seen, salvation and all true guidance rests upon His will, and the work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and so make men willing in the day of God's power.

You quote the ancient proverb, Where there is no vision, the people perish. That vision is not a fleeting dream of the night nor a private impression, but the revealed Word of God. Where that Word is not preached and believed and obeyed, the people cast off restraint. Where it is, they are kept. The wealth of God's people lies not in ready money but in promises to pay, promises which God has made to His own people, and those promises are preserved to us century after century in the Scriptures. There we find wonderfully plain directions as to all manner of circumstances and conditions. Nine times out of ten, look to the Ten Commandments and you will at least know what you must not do, and knowing what you must not do, you will be able to conclude what you may do.

We should recognize God in the affairs of the future, because there is a Divine will which governs all things. As surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, so in grace let us rest assured that He is King, willing to do as He pleases. It is foolish for a man to feel that he can do as he likes and that everything will fall out as he desires, that he can both propose and dispose and has not to ask God's consent at all. When you say, I will do this or that, always add, in thought if not in words, If the Lord wills. No harm can come to you if you bow to God's sovereign sway.

There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and there is a providential will of God which we should always consult, with that guidance which comes from the circumstances that surround us. The true child of God learns to say two things together, Father, I will, for he may come with holy boldness through Christ, and Father, not as I will, for he bends before his Father's will. You can always have your way when your way is God's way. The sure way to carry out self will is when self will is nothing else but God's will, and that mighty power in prayer will not be given without much close fellowship with Him. If you live near God, He will say things to you in His Word and by His providence that He will not tell to those who live at a distance.

So we will pray that the Lord will give you not novelty but light, not a new revelation but a clearer sight of what He has already revealed, and a heart made willing to obey it.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows, and that every good and perfect gift cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness. We thank You that You fulfill what You have promised. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son that You would guide this soul who desires Your will above all personal goals. Grant illumination to understand Your Word, submission to bow to Your sovereign will, and grace to say, If the Lord wills, I will go or I will stay. Change the will where it is obstinate, and make it willing in the day of Your power. Lead by Your revealed Word and by Your wise providence, and afterward receive to glory those whom You guide. Keep this one from following mere personal ambition, and make the doing of Your will to be the best profit and joy. We ask this in Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your desire to follow the Lord and not simply your own plans. That humility is pleasing to God and it is right to ask Him for wisdom and direction.

The verse you mentioned, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as speaking about personal pictures or dreams, but the word there for vision means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no preaching and hearing of God's law and truth, the people cast off restraint. What God has provided for that need is His written Word. As Psalm 119 says, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. We already have the sure vision of Scripture to guide us, and the Holy Spirit to illumine it as we read, pray, and walk in obedience.

For this reason I want to gently encourage you not to seek visions as an experience in themselves. In my homilies I have taught that God gave open visions to some because they needed them, but not to others who were already full of faith. The shepherds who were simple and unlearned were shown angels, while Joseph who was faithful needed no such outward sight, only a quiet word to confirm what was already in his heart, because to God alone belongs the knowledge of the secrets of the heart. I have also taught that at the baptism of Jesus the Spirit appeared as a dove not for the sake of the apostles but for those present who needed a sign, and that afterward no sensible vision was needed, because faith suffices instead of all signs. Signs are not for those who believe, but for those who do not yet believe.

Even the apostle Paul, who was given great revelations, did not seek them for guidance in every decision and was warned lest he be exalted by them. God gives revelation according to His wisdom and for His purposes, not because we ask for an extraordinary experience to replace faithful walking with Him.

So rather than praying that you would receive visions, I will pray that God will give you what He has promised to all who ask Him.

Let us pray together. Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, we thank you that you have spoken to us fully in your Son and in the Scriptures, and that every good and perfect gift comes from you. Grant to this your servant a greater love for your Word, clarity to understand it, and grace to obey it. By your Holy Spirit give wisdom where there is uncertainty, and lead away from mere personal ambition into what pleases you. Make the path clear through Scripture, through prayer, through wise counsel in the church, and through the quiet work of your Spirit in the conscience. Help this one to trust you and to walk faithfully day by day, not seeking what is sensational but seeking Christ Himself. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

Continue to seek the Lord daily in Scripture, in prayer, and in fellowship with faithful believers. If you keep your eyes on His revealed Word and ask for wisdom, He will not fail to guide you.
