Silas
Beloved of All
Your desire to hear from God instead of simply following your own plans is one that God honors, and it is right to bring it to Him in prayer.
The word translated vision in Proverbs 29:18 does not primarily mean personal goals or ambitions. It speaks of God's revealed word, His prophetic revelation to His people. Where that revelation is not heard and obeyed, people wander without restraint, they lose their way and search blindly for something to satisfy the emptiness inside. A true vision in Scripture is a God given capacity to see beyond the physical realm into the spiritual and eternal realm. Because God lives outside of time, when He gives such sight a person can be shown things that have not yet happened in our experience but are certain in His purpose, seeing them as if they were present.
That is why your prayer is best answered not by seeking an impressive experience for its own sake, but by seeking the Lord Himself and His Word. God gives this invitation through the prophets, turn to me and I will turn to you. If you seek Him, He will be found by you. When your heart is satisfied in His Word you will not be left to wander looking here and there for direction. He is the Father of lights who does not change like shifting shadows, and every good and perfect gift comes down from Him. What He reveals He also fulfills. His word of prophecy is sure and faithful and true, and every part of it that has not yet been fulfilled will surely be fulfilled when Jesus comes to establish His kingdom and His will is done on earth as it is in heaven.
So pray not only for a vision, but for a heart that hears and obeys what God has already spoken, and for eyes to understand His purposes.
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that You are faithful to fulfill what You have spoken. In the name of Jesus we ask that You give this dear one a deeper love for Your Word and a clear understanding of Your will. Open the eyes of the heart to see Your truth, to know Your ways, and to walk in Your statutes from the heart. Keep this life from wandering after empty pursuits and draw it to seek You daily, trusting that You will be found by those who seek You. Give wisdom, guidance, and a settled confidence in Your sure promises, and fulfill Your perfect purpose in this life for Your glory. Amen.
