Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We rejoice with you in your desire to seek God's direction rather than simply following your own personal goals, and we join with you in asking for His clear guidance.

We love your heart for Proverbs 29:18 which says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. In the original language this vision or revelation speaks of God's prophetic word and revealed will, not merely a personal dream or ambition. Without His word and direction we do indeed wander and perish, but when we keep His law and walk in His revealed truth we are blessed. This is why your prayer is so pleasing to the Father, because you are asking not for your own plans to succeed but for His will to be made known to you.

We want to gently encourage you to seek His vision in the way He most clearly gives it. God does still speak and He can give dreams and visions as Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:17 remind us, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. Yet we know that every true vision from God will never contradict His written Word, and His primary way of revealing His will to us today is through Scripture illuminated by the Holy Spirit. We are told in Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. And in Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

So we encourage you not to chase a mystical experience for its own sake, but to diligently seek Him in His Word, in prayer, and in quiet waiting, testing every impression against Scripture, for 1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits whether they are of God. Personal goals are not wrong when they are surrendered to Him, but God's vision is greater, as Jeremiah 29:11 declares For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. When we delight in Him, He shapes our desires to align with His purpose.

We thank you for praying in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved, as John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And we agree with your remembrance that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow, James 1:17. He indeed does not change like shifting shadows and He is faithful to fulfill what He reveals.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, and that You delight to lead Your children. We ask in Jesus' mighty name that You pour out wisdom and revelation upon our dear fellow believer who seeks Your vision. Open the eyes of their heart to understand Your Word, speak clearly through Scripture, through Your Holy Spirit, and through godly counsel, and make Your path straight before them. Give them a holy vision that is rooted in Your truth, not in personal ambition, and grant them the courage to write it down and wait for it as Habakkuk 2:3 teaches, for the vision is yet for the appointed time. Guard them from deception and from leaning on their own understanding, and help them to test every spirit and hold fast to what is good. Fulfill in their life what You have purposed for Your glory, that they may walk in obedience and bear fruit that remains. We ask that You align their desires with Your will, that they may not perish for lack of revelation but be blessed as they keep Your law and follow Your Son. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We appreciate the heart behind your request. You want God to lead and not just your own plans, and that desire itself honors Him.

We have found it helpful to think of vision less as a sudden picture and more as a steady sense of calling that grows as we walk with God. It is the difference between chasing our own ideas of what would feel exciting and learning to want what God wants day by day. That kind of vision usually becomes clearer through faithful small steps than all at once.

One simple practice that helps many is to keep a quiet space each day to bring your plans before the Lord and listen, then write down what you sense He is impressing on you and bring it to His Word and to a mature believer who knows you to help weigh it. Over time you will start to see patterns in His leading.

We are praying for you and are grateful that God delights to guide His children and is patient to make His way clear as we keep seeking Him.

Father, thank You for this hunger to follow You and not self. Give clear leading, a humble heart to receive it, and courage to obey what You show step by step. Draw them closer to Jesus as they seek Your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow your own personal goals but to be led of the Lord is itself an evidence of a work of Grace upon the heart, for naturally we do not like being guided and would choose our own course.

The text you quote is precious, but you must understand it aright. Where there is no vision, the people perish, does not speak of dreams or private ecstasies, but of the prophetic revelation, the Word out of God's mouth. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from Divine Inspiration must be as unsatisfying food. The vision that keeps a people from perishing is that sure Word which the Holy Spirit has given, and which Paul brings forward as invested with Divine authority. Apart from that light men cast off restraint and run each man to his own way.

You ask for visions, and I would point you to how the Lord does guide His people. First, be guided by the general directions given in God's Word. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the will of God. By that very acquiescence in the Divine will we are furnished with unerring guidance. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief, but to stand at ease in the midst of trial and to see the salvation of God shows a veteran spirit and much Divine Grace.

Remember also that God's purpose is infallible. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the Divine purpose. You and I are as waves upon His great sea, yet the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. It is the miracle of miracles that the creature is free, absolutely free, and yet the Divine purpose stands. You need not fear that if you submit yourself as God's pupil, He will fail to teach you. David could say, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He was chastened but never cast out, still continued as God's pupil, made to observe God's work in himself and in others until he wondered at it.

Therefore let us pray together that the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, will grant you not a fleeting fancy but true spiritual sight.

O Lord our God, You do not change like shifting shadows, and You fulfil the counsel of Your will. We bless You for Your unchanging Word and for the blood of Jesus Christ Your dear Son which cleanses us from all sin. We ask of You for this soul, that You would open the eyes of the understanding to behold wondrous things out of Your law. Guide with Your counsel, and afterward receive to Glory. Take away love of self and human wisdom, that Divine Wisdom may appear. Make this one Your pupil, and then Your witness, declaring Your wondrous works with pen and voice as You give opportunity. Keep from perishing by keeping near to Christ, who is the clearest witness both of Your hatred of sin and Your love to sinners. Let not personal goals rule, but let Your purpose stand, and give grace to acquiesce therein with joy. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is the way of salvation. Amen.
