Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..."

Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s vision for your life. The verse you shared from Proverbs 29:18 reminds us that without God’s revelation, His people wander without purpose or protection. How precious it is that you desire His voice above your own ambitions! Let us lift this before the throne of grace together.

Father in Heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega, the One who holds all wisdom and knowledge. Lord, Your Word declares in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." We ask that You open the eyes of our dear brother/sister’s heart to receive Your visions, dreams, and guidance. Remove any distractions, fears, or doubts that may hinder their ability to hear from You clearly. Let Your Holy Spirit speak in ways that are unmistakable, through Your Word, godly counsel, circumstances, and even supernatural revelation, so they may walk in the path You have prepared.

We also pray for discernment, Lord, for the enemy seeks to deceive with counterfeit visions or false signs. Guard their mind and spirit, that they may test every spirit against the truth of Scripture, as 1 John 4:1 instructs: "Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." May they be rooted in Your Word, so they recognize Your voice alone.

Father, if there are areas in their life where they have been leaning on their own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6), we ask that You convict and realign their heart to seek You first in all things. Help them surrender their personal goals, ambitions, and plans at the foot of the cross, trusting that Your plans are higher and better than anything they could devise. We declare over them the promise of Psalm 32:8: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you."

We rebuke any spirit of confusion, doubt, or rebellion that would keep them from walking in the fullness of God’s vision for their life. In Jesus’ name, we break every chain of self-reliance and declare that their steps are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23). May they be like the men and women of faith in Hebrews 11, who moved forward not by sight but by the assurance of Your promises.

Lord, we also ask that You surround them with godly mentors and fellow believers who can confirm Your leading. Let them be encouraged by the body of Christ, as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17). And if there are any sins or unconfessed areas in their life that may be hindering their prayers, we ask that You bring them to light so they may repent and walk in freedom (1 John 1:9).

Above all, we pray that their life would bring glory to Your name. May their obedience to Your vision not only bless them but also draw others to Christ. We thank You, Father, for hearing our prayer and for the privilege of coming before You in the name of Jesus, the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). It is through His blood that we have access to Your throne, and it is by His authority that we pray.

We trust You to fulfill Your purposes in their life, and we declare that Your vision for them will come to pass, for Your Word says in Habakkuk 2:3, "For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay." In Jesus’ holy and precious name, we pray. Amen.

What a wise and humble request, to want God’s vision more than your own personal goals. We hear in that a heart that truly wants to walk in step with Him, and we join you in asking for that clarity.

We’ve found that God’s vision rarely comes as a sudden, dramatic download, but often unfolds as we steadily stay close to Him. It’s less about waiting for a lightning bolt and more about learning to recognize His voice in the ordinary, through His Word, prayer, and the nudges of the Holy Spirit. One simple practice that helps many people is setting aside a few minutes each day to read a passage of Scripture with the question, “Lord, what are You showing me about Your heart and my next step?” Then jotting down what comes, even if it’s just a small shift in perspective. Over time, those impressions often weave together into a clearer picture.

Talking it through with a mature believer you trust can also help you test and sharpen what you sense. The Lord often confirms His direction through the body of Christ, not in isolation.

Let’s pray together now.

Father, thank You for stirring this deep desire to follow Your leading, not just our own plans. Open this dear person’s eyes to see what You see, maybe not through a spectacular vision, but through a growing, steady awareness of Your purposes. Quiet their heart to hear You, align their desires with Yours, and give them patience as Your Spirit works. May they rest in knowing that You guide the humble, and that You are already at work. In Jesus’ name, amen.

You do well to fear the mere following of your own personal goals, for where there is no true vision, the people perish indeed, casting off restraint and rushing headlong. The heart is deceitful above all things, and to be guided by its native impulses is to steer a ship with a compass that points ever downward. What a wisdom it is, then, that you would say to Him, "My God, You shall guide me with Your counsel!" This is the very path of safety.

But will God guide us? Of all beings, God is most easy of access, and He has promised to lead the blind by a way they know not. How does He guide? First, by the general directions of His Word, that lamp unto our feet. That sacred volume is full of light for every step. But more than this, the grace of God infuses great principles, principles of self-denial, faith, humility, and contentment, which supply unerring guidance from within. Bowing with holy submission to the Divine will, obstinacy is dethroned, haste is checked, and by that very fact we are furnished with direction. The man of God alone with God, who declares all his ways as to a confidant, shall not go amiss. Make Him your counselor in all things, hiding nothing, and wait upon Him daily. You will go amiss if you do not.

Seek not visions of a fevered fancy, for the art of god-making is very common among men. They imagine a god after their own ideas. Shun this. The clear vision we must have is a personal sight and appropriation of God Himself. It cannot be that a Christian should be in the dark and not have his God with him. For if his God is with him it must be light round about him. We each one feel this to be his chief defense, this to be his personal holdfast: "My God will hear me." Let the personal pronouns take their hold, "My God, my God." Live by appropriating your God to yourself. When He is your God, the God of the hills is equally the God of the valleys for your soul. He sees you, He defends you, and He has in ambush a multitude of mighty men for your deliverance.

Look unto the Lord Jesus, the Great Defender of His Church, riding forth in sovereign power. And remember, the promises of God have a perpetual value in them, ever ready for a new fulfillment. Yet there is no true understanding of any truth of God except by a personal experience of it. The Truth never seems to have such vividness about it as when a man tells it out of his own soul. Go, then, and plead your cause before Him who has pleaded the causes of your soul. Tell Him, "My God, I ask not for a sign to gratify curiosity, but for the guiding light of Your countenance, that I may not perish in willfulness, but live in the light of Your purpose." Pray thus, and know that the God who inclined your heart to seek this will surely grant it for Jesus' sake. Let nothing drive you from your faith. Still hold on Jesus, sink or swim. As for me, if ever I am lost it shall be at the foot of the Cross.

God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. The desire to receive visions from God is not a small thing, but take care that you understand what true vision entails. The word of the cross is the power of God to those being saved, but to those perishing it is foolishness. Therefore they who inquire by reasonings and seek after signs of their own devising are the ones who stumble. God’s revelation has already sketched out before your eyes what is coming, not in trances and ecstasies alone, but in the life of self-denial and in the commandments. You recall the blessed Antony, to whom divine visions were vouchsafed and who showed forth such a life as the laws of Christ require. Yet that same grace was given to him precisely because he had first made himself the last of all and had bruised his heart from every swelling passion.

When you ask for visions that you may not follow personal goals, examine whether your personal goals are already your master. For if any one is entangled with the love of women, or of riches, or of glory, he laughs at hell and despises the kingdom, becoming a slave to vainglory, than which what can be more worthless? The potion that kills the serpents within us is the precious Blood of Christ received with full assurance, together with the divine Scriptures carefully heard and almsgiving added to our hearing. A hand that is bruised cannot be lifted up on high; so a soul that is bruised with mourning for sins cannot be puffed up by its own ambitions. How then will you receive a true vision if the eye of your soul is darkened by neglect of the poor? For even though you practise self-denial, even though you practise virginity, you are set without the bridechamber if you have not almsgiving.

Do not imagine that a private revelation can substitute for the strictest obedience to what has already been spoken. The great prophecy of Antony concerning the Arians served to demonstrate the truth and instructed many in self-denial, yet it was the fruit of a life already laid down. You must first cast from you every unsavory word and seek after a good disposition and gentleness. If you pass by the things of God and hasten after extraordinary experiences, neither will ordinary obedience follow. Seek first the virtues which are able in the greatest degree to profit your neighbor: prayer that is made efficacious by mercy, fasting that has strength from almsgiving. For your prayers and your alms come up for a memorial before God. It is by this cleansing that the inner sight is restored, and only then shall you truly live and not perish in the trap of your own hidden lusts.

Your request cuts to the heart of why we so easily drift. You’ve identified the danger: living only by personal goals is a form of spiritual blindness that leaves the soul starved for what truly lasts. The longing for a God-given vision is right, because it means you want your life to answer the purpose for which you were made. And Scripture is clear: you and I were not created for our own pleasure or to chase our private ambitions; we were made for Him. A life that truly satisfies is one that seeks to please God. So praying for vision from Him is really praying to see what He sees, to love what He loves, and to walk in the works He prepared beforehand.

The key is understanding the nature of that vision. It is not primarily a set of new plans or vivid mental pictures about your career or circumstances. In its deepest sense, the vision that saves people from perishing is the unveiling of Jesus Christ Himself. All through Scripture, when God wanted to rescue His servants from aimlessness, He gave them a fresh sight of who He is. That is what the Apostle John experienced: the revelation of Jesus as the risen, reigning Lord in the midst of His churches. Every true vision from God will always bring you back to the centrality of Christ, His faithfulness, His authority, His love, and His soon return. As you see Him more clearly, the Holy Spirit works to conform you into His image, so you will respond as He responds, love as He loves, and become His faithful witness to the world.

So I will gladly join you in this prayer, but let’s ask the Father for that kind of unveiling. Ask to see Jesus as the one who proved Himself by His miracles, died for your sins, and whom God raised from the dead because death could not hold Him. When He fills your vision, the clutter of self-focused goals begins to fade. You find you have a strength you didn’t know you had, simply because you’re resting in His power rather than your own. And He sets before you an open door: a life where you no longer aimlessly wander but become a pillar in the house of God, with His name written upon you, secure in belonging to Him forever.

The promise running through every age is that those who keep the word of His patience will be kept from the hour of trial designed for those who rebel. That doesn’t mean a life free of trouble, Jesus Himself said in this world you will have tribulation, but it means a life anchored in His protection and purpose. So pray boldly: “Father, give me not just a goal, but a sight of Your Son, and let that vision master my heart.” He delights to answer that prayer, because it aligns you with the eternal pleasure for which you were designed. Every morning, lift your eyes past your own ideas and say, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.” That is the vision which never perishes.

It is our heart’s desire that you would hear clearly from the Lord, so that your steps align not with personal ambition but with His perfect will. Scripture reminds us that without vision, the people perish—and so we have continued to lift you before the throne, asking the Holy Spirit to open your spiritual eyes and speak to your heart in ways that are unmistakably from Him.
