Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..."

Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s guidance through spiritual vision. The verse you shared from Proverbs 29:18 reminds us that without God’s revelation, His people lose their way, wandering in confusion rather than walking in purpose. How beautiful that you desire to align your steps with His will rather than your own ambitions! This is the posture of a humble and teachable heart, and we rejoice in your hunger for the Lord’s voice.

Yet we must also gently remind you that visions from God are not merely for personal fulfillment or even to avoid missteps, they are given to glorify Christ, edify His body, and advance His kingdom. In Numbers 12:6, the Lord declares, "Hear now my words. If there is a prophet among you, I Yahweh will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream." Visions are a sacred gift, not a tool for self-direction alone. We must approach this desire with reverence, testing every revelation against Scripture (1 John 4:1) and submitting it to godly counsel (Proverbs 11:14).

We also lift up any areas where you may be struggling to surrender your own plans. Proverbs 16:9 says, "A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps." Even when we think we know the way, our vision is limited, God’s is perfect. Are there dreams, relationships, or ambitions you’ve held tightly that He may be asking you to release? The Lord often speaks most clearly when we’ve laid down our idols, whether they be career goals, relational desires, or even spiritual experiences.

Let us pray together:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Lord, You see the longing in our brother/sister’s heart to hear from You, to see as You see, and to walk in Your perfect will. We ask that You would open their spiritual eyes and ears, granting them visions and dreams that align with Your Word and Your purposes. Guard their heart from deception, Lord, and let every revelation bring them closer to Christlikeness, not just personal clarity.

We confess that sometimes our own plans can blind us to Yours. So we ask You to search our hearts, reveal any areas of pride or self-reliance, and replace them with trust in Your sovereignty. Teach us to wait on You, to delight in Your law, and to walk in step with Your Spirit. May we not be like those who perish for lack of vision, but like the psalmist who declared, 'Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path' (Psalm 119:105).

Father, we also pray for discernment. In a world full of voices, some from You, some from our own flesh, and some from the enemy, grant us wisdom to test every spirit and hold fast to what is good. Let us not chase after supernatural experiences for their own sake, but seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, knowing all else will be added unto us.

We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who speaks. You spoke creation into being, You spoke through prophets and apostles, and You still speak today through Your Word and by Your Spirit. We trust You to guide our brother/sister into all truth, for the glory of Jesus’ name. Amen."

In your journey, remember that the greatest vision God gives is not always a picture of the future, but a deeper revelation of Himself. Moses didn’t just see a burning bush, he encountered the "I AM" (Exodus 3:14). Paul didn’t just receive a roadmap to ministry, he was blinded by the glory of Christ (Acts 9:3-5). Seek Him above all else, and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6).

If you’ve not yet fully surrendered your life to Jesus as Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so today. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." It is only through Christ that we have access to the Father and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 16:13). Without Him, we are spiritually blind and lost. If this is where you are, cry out to Jesus now, He is faithful to save!

We’re grateful you asked for prayer about this, it’s a deep, honest desire, and you’re not alone in wrestling with the pull of personal goals that sometimes feel too small or self-focused. That verse from Proverbs has stirred many hearts because it points to something real: we need a bigger picture, something that anchors why we get up each day.

A vision from God doesn’t always arrive as a dramatic picture in the mind; often it grows quietly as we spend time with Him, letting His priorities reshape our own. One truth we’ve seen is that when God gives a vision, it tends to reorient us away from merely chasing our own comfort or success and toward His purposes, things like loving others well, serving faithfully where we are, and walking in integrity even when no one sees. It might start as a nudge toward a particular need, a persistent compassion, or a quiet calling you can’t shake. The key is that it draws us to trust Him more than our own plans.

So we’ll pray with you now.

Lord Jesus, thank You for stirring this hunger in our friend’s heart, a hunger not just for direction but for a vision that comes from You and honors You. Quiet the noise of self-focus and anxiety, and help them to rest in Your presence. Open their eyes, in Your time and way, to what You are already doing around them and how they can join in. Give them the courage to follow where You lead, even when it feels uncertain. And as they seek Your face, may they find that their deepest delight becomes simply knowing You and walking in step with Your Spirit. We ask this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

The cry of your heart is one I have often heard among the saints, for to be led of the Spirit and not by the flesh is the great longing of every true believer. Yet we must be clear what is meant by vision. In these days, when God has given us the completed Scripture, the vision that keeps us from perishing is not a trance or a dream spun from our own fancy, but the opened eye of faith that beholds the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Where the Word of the Lord is set before men and the Holy Spirit illuminates it, there the people do not perish; they live, and live abundantly. To seek visions apart from the written revelation is to risk chasing sparks of our own kindling when the Sun of Righteousness has already risen.

Take heed that the desire to escape mere personal goals does not slide into a craving for signs and wonders, for the fear of man brings a snare, but trust in the Lord makes one safe. The soul that anchors itself upon God’s character and promises stands in a strong tower; it needs no new apparition to bolster faith. The glory of God is not to conceal Himself forever, but to reveal Himself to those whom He prepares to receive the revelation, and that preparation comes by the Law and the Gospel as they are declared in Scripture. Have you felt the hammer of God’s Word breaking your hard self-will? Have you known its fire melting your pride? Then you are in the very school where vision is born. Vision is not given to the casual observer, but to the one who waits on the Lord with a humbled heart, for before honour is humility, and before destruction the heart of man is haughty.

Cry to God, then, that He would engrave His law upon your inward parts and write it upon your heart. Ask that you might see Jesus more clearly as your faithful Friend who loves you everlastingly. That is the vision that will not perish: to know Him, and the power of His resurrection. When you serve Him in the little plot He has given you, tending it day by day, you shall eat the fruit thereof. Do not leave the Scriptures to hunt after voices in the air; rather, search the Word as a king searches out a matter, and pray the Spirit to give you the seeing eye. Then your path will be that of the just, shining more and more unto the perfect day. May the Lord direct your heart into the love of God and the patient waiting for Christ, and you shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

The desire to receive visions from God is a noble one, for without heavenly guidance we do indeed stumble after our own purposes and perish. Yet understand that the vision which truly preserves life is not always a spectacular sight granted to the eyes. The faith that saves requires a revelation from above, as our Lord said: no one comes to Him unless the Father draws him. This is no mere human reasoning, but a gift of light to the well-ordered soul.

Do not imagine that you must first receive a vision in order to abandon self-will. The Apostle Paul was caught up into paradise and heard unutterable things, yet he chose to boast not in those visions but in his weaknesses, knowing that God’s strength is perfected in affliction. If you seek to avoid mere personal goals, then learn from him. He did not establish his own righteousness but submitted to the righteousness of God. Those who seek signs often overlook the quiet work of the Spirit in the Scriptures and in the daily remembrance of God.

Consider the blessed Antony, who dwelt in the desert and had divine visions vouchsafed to him. How did he prepare? By a life of self-denial, by constant prayer, by carrying the remembrance of God always in his thoughts. God hides such things from the wise and prudent who trust in their own intellect, but He reveals them to babes. So become a babe in humility. Let your prayer be less about seeing visions and more about being made fit to receive whatever guidance He pleases, even if it comes through trial, through counsel, or through the quiet conviction of His word.

If you would not follow your own goals, then cease striving to direct your own path. Pray instead that God would grant you a heart that remembers Him from the land of your exile, that He would write His law upon it so you may not sin against Him. The vision that prevents perishing is the constant turning of the soul to God, the recognition of His presence everywhere. Ask for this: to be taught by Him interiorly, to have the eyes of your understanding enlightened. Then, whether He grants a supernatural sight or not, you will walk in the true vision that is Jesus Christ Himself, the way, the truth, and the life.

Your desire for God-given vision strikes at the heart of why we exist. Proverbs tells us that without vision people cast off restraint and perish, but that vision is far more than a personal roadmap, it is seeing clearly what God sees and aligning our lives with His eternal purposes. The deepest vision God offers is the unveiling of Jesus Christ Himself. When John was shown things to come, the revelation was not locked away; it was an uncovering of spiritual reality, an insight into the world we cannot see with natural eyes. The Spirit’s goal is to conform you to the image of Christ, so that you respond as He responds, love as He loves, and live for the Father’s pleasure rather than your own.

You were created for God’s pleasure, not merely to chase after private goals. When we lose sight of that, we drift. But when we truly see Him, whether through Scripture, prayer, or those moments when He breaks into our awareness, our priorities are reordered. The vision you’re asking for isn’t necessarily a dramatic apparition; it’s the Spirit opening your understanding to the things God has prepared for those who love Him. It’s insight into His kingdom, where your part fits into His story, not where He signs off on your plans. In the book of Revelation we see the church in heaven, worshiping, while the world reels under judgment. That eternal perspective helps us now: what we do in these fleeting years echoes into an unending kingdom. A God-given vision burns away self-centered ambition and replaces it with the joy of pleasing Him.

Jesus Himself stands at the door and knocks. He is not a distant Lord giving impersonal orders; He seeks deep, intimate fellowship. If you open that door, He will come in and commune with you. In that nearness, your goals become His goals. You stop asking “What do I want to achieve?” and start asking “Lord, what would You have me do?” The vision you need will flow from that surrendered relationship. It may not come as a voice or a picture, but as a clear conviction, a persistent burden, or a peace that surpasses logic.

Let me pray with you now: Father, in the name of Jesus, I lift up this dear one who longs for Your vision. Open their eyes to see the realities of Your Spirit. Remove every fear and earthly distraction. Grant them the insight that comes from knowing You, not just information about You. Conform their desires to Yours, that they may not perish by chasing shadows but live in the fullness of Your purpose. May they be faithful to the calling You place on their life, and find their true fulfillment in bringing pleasure to You. Amen.

Keep seeking Him in His Word. The same Spirit who unveiled mysteries to John longs to guide you into all truth, and to show you the hope to which He has called you.
