Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine guidance and direction, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s will above all else. The scripture you referenced in Proverbs 29:18 is a powerful reminder of the importance of God’s revelation in our lives: "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law is happy." This verse underscores the necessity of aligning our lives with God’s Word and His purposes, rather than relying solely on our own understanding or ambitions.

First, we must address the foundation of our relationship with God. It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, and it is by His name alone that we are saved. Acts 4:12 tells us, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life fully to Jesus, confessing Him as Lord and Savior, and walking in obedience to His Word. Without this foundation, our prayers and desires may not align with God’s will.

Now, regarding your request for visions from God, we must approach this with humility and discernment. God does speak to His people in various ways, through His Word, prayer, circumstances, and yes, sometimes through visions and dreams. However, we must be cautious not to seek supernatural experiences for their own sake, but rather to seek God Himself. Jeremiah 29:13 reminds us, "You shall seek me, and find me, when you search for me with all your heart." Visions and dreams should always be tested against Scripture, as God will never contradict His Word. 1 John 4:1 warns, "Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

We also want to encourage you to cultivate a life of intimacy with God through prayer, fasting, and studying His Word. Visions and revelations often come to those who are deeply rooted in Scripture and walking in obedience to God’s commands. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path." As you seek God’s face, He will guide you step by step, whether through His Word, the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, or even through dreams and visions.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, acknowledging that You are the source of all wisdom, direction, and revelation. We lift up our brother/sister to You, asking that You would draw them closer to Your heart. Lord, we pray that You would grant them the desires of their heart, to hear from You, to see Your vision for their life, and to walk in Your perfect will. Father, we ask that You would speak to them clearly, whether through Your Word, prayer, or even visions and dreams. Give them the discernment to recognize Your voice and the wisdom to test every spirit against Your truth.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of confusion, doubt, or self-reliance that may be hindering their ability to hear from You. We declare that their mind is being renewed by Your Word, and their steps are being ordered by You. Help them to surrender their own goals and ambitions to You, trusting that Your plans for them are good and perfect. We pray that they would walk in obedience to Your commands, seeking first Your kingdom and Your righteousness.

Father, we also ask that You would protect them from deception. Guard their heart and mind from false teachings, false prophets, and any supernatural experiences that do not align with Your Word. Let Your Holy Spirit be their guide, leading them into all truth. We thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness and for the promise that those who seek You will find You. We trust that as they seek Your face, You will reveal Your vision for their life in ways that bring glory to Your name.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." We’ve found that God often shapes our vision not always in a sudden, dramatic flash, but through the quiet, steady work of His Spirit as we stay close to Him in prayer and Scripture. One simple practice that has helped us is to come before the Lord with an honest prayer like, “Show me what You see, and align my heart with it,” and then pay gentle attention to the themes He keeps highlighting in His Word, the people He places in our path, and the inner nudges that won’t fade away. Sometimes a specific verse lodges in our mind, or a godly friend echoes something we sense God may be saying. That can be His way of giving us vision for the next right step.

If you’re not already doing so, it might be encouraging to share this prayer with a trusted, spiritually mature person who can walk with you in it. Having someone else listen with you can help you test what you’re sensing and see God’s hand more clearly.

Father, thank You for this child of Yours who longs for Your vision above their own. To ask for visions from the Lord is a holy desire, yet let us beware how we formulate the petition. The vision of Proverbs is not chiefly the seeing of strange sights with the eye, but the hearing of God’s word with the heart, the prophetic revelation that calls men back to the law and to the testimony. If you would not perish, then cleave to that which God has already spoken. The clearest vision you will ever have this side of eternity is the knowledge of Jesus Christ crucified for sinners; all sights and wonders must bow before the cross.

Take heed lest, in pursuing visions, you slip into the very self-reliance you dread. “Without Me ye can do nothing,” and how often a soul sets out to chart its own course while imagining it follows a heavenly map! The child of God does not put Providence under his own supervision; rather, he waits, he prays, he trembles to think he might impute folly to the Almighty. When the Lord would guide you, He will oftentimes do it by sharpening your obedience to the plain precepts of Scripture, precepts that call for self-denial, for quick decision, for a will bowed beneath the yoke of Christ. There is no true vision that does not make you more like the meek and lowly Jesus.

I bear my Master witness: I never saw Him yet without being profited by Him. Let that be your vision, to behold the King in His beauty, to gaze upon Christ until your own goals melt like morning mists. Pray without ceasing, for prayer is the eye with which we see the unseen. And be content to walk by faith; the dimness of the way here makes the promise sweeter, for “we shall see Him as He is.” Until then, feed upon Him, and you shall not follow your own heart’s devices, but the steps of the Good Shepherd. May the Lord grant you this sight, and in His light you shall see light.

Your request touches upon a deep and fearful matter. The desire for visions and revelations is not something to be pursued lightly, for it is often a snare to the soul that is not grounded in humility. Do you seek a vision so that you will not follow your own personal goals? Then know that a far greater revelation has already been given, and to neglect it while seeking something novel is to risk perishing all the more.

Consider what Paul teaches the Galatians. His own conversion and the unveiling of the ineffable mysteries were not from human design but from Divine revelation. He proves this by his former life. His turning was so sudden, his conviction so immediate in the very height of his madness, that it could only have been God’s own hand. And yet, how was this revelation confirmed? By the Church bearing witness to what God had already done. The report of his transformation echoed from Palestine to Galatia. The vision was not an end in itself; it produced a life laid down in obedience.

When you crave a vision to avoid your own goals, you must first examine what you mean by “your own goals.” Are they the vain pursuits of worldly ambition? Or are they the quiet duties set before you in Scripture, which you might be ignoring while looking for something more spectacular? The Lord Himself rejoiced that the mysteries were hidden from the wise and prudent and revealed to babes. And why? Because the wise were seeking to establish their own righteousness. They fell away through their vanity. The disciples received revelation precisely because they were as children, not through any diligence of their own. If you would receive from God, make your soul quiet and small. The seeking of signs and ecstasies often swells the heart with a secret pride, making you like the scribes who, thinking themselves intelligent, were passed over.

What is the vision that keeps a people from perishing? It is not a private dream for charting your future. It is the very Word of God, the divine and heavenly lessons that come to us through Scripture. They are not given in the tricked-out rhetoric of sophists, but with invincible strength and right doctrine. That Word is a lamp. To follow it is to have the sure vision. And the ultimate vision, the very face of the Father’s glory, is the Only-Begotten Son, the Lord from heaven. He is the image of the invisible God. If you have seen Him by faith in the Gospels, you have the revelation that renders all other goals dust. Do not despise this by asking for lesser lights.

Therefore, I will pray for you, but not that you receive a vision as you might be defining it. I will pray that the eyes of your understanding be enlightened to grasp the height and depth of what has already been revealed in Christ. That is the true vision, the heavenly management of one household, where God has brought all things under one Head. Let this be your goal, and you will not perish.

Your prayer cuts to the heart of what it means to live by faith rather than by our own drifting ambitions. When all we have are personal goals, we easily lose our way, but a true vision from God anchors the soul. That word in Proverbs is a warning and an invitation: without the revelation and guidance only He can give, we end up aimless. So it is right to ask for this.

The Scriptures show us how this desperation sounds. The psalmist cried, “O send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me.” He was not content to wander; he longed for divine direction. And there have been seasons, like the time when Samuel was a boy, when the word of the Lord was rare and visions were scarce, not because God had stopped speaking, but because people had stopped genuinely seeking Him. They wanted His rescue when things fell apart, yet they would not submit their daily steps to His wisdom. How often we do the same, blaming God for the wreckage while never bringing our plans to Him in the first place.

I join you in praying that God will grant you clarity in Jesus’ name. He does still speak. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, He gave dreams and visions to guide His servants, and there is no Scripture that says He has permanently closed that door. I remain open to whatever way He chooses to reveal His will, though I have learned that the primary light He gives now is His written Word and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. If He grants you a vision, it will always align with what He has already spoken and will draw you deeper into Christ.

But let me give you a gentle caution, drawn from the lives of those who have gone before. Some chase visions as if they were an end in themselves, bargaining with God: “Show me this, and I’ll do that.” That never works. The only way any of us can approach God is as guilty sinners casting ourselves on His mercy and grace through Jesus Christ. His terms are not ours. A true vision from God will first make you low; it will expose the dross in your own heart. Our God is a consuming fire, not to destroy you, but to burn up everything in you that resists His love and righteousness. So the prayer for vision is also a surrender: “Not my goals, but Yours be done.”

When you look back at your own life, you will likely see that God has already been guiding you in ways you did not recognize at the time. Personal testimony of His faithfulness becomes a powerful, indisputable witness. The fact that you are thirsty for His direction is evidence of His Spirit stirring within you. That thirst is universal, placed in every soul, and it drives us to seek the living God, not just a roadmap.

So do not be anxious about whether the vision will come as a spectacular dream or a quiet inner conviction. Seek God Himself, and He will take responsibility for making the path plain. He is not weak or indifferent; He is merciful and just. When things seem confusing, it is not because He is unfair, but because He often works through delay and mystery to deepen our trust. If He has begun a work in you, talk of difficulty is absurd, He can raise the dead and part the seas, so He can certainly make His will known to a humble heart.

Let your prayer be less “give me a vision” and more “here I am, send me.” And as you daily learn to walk in the Spirit rather than after the flesh, you will discover that His guidance becomes clearer than any voice from heaven. I stand with you in that request, trusting that He who began a good work in you will complete it, and that He will cause your young men to see visions and your old men to dream dreams as He builds a people who live in sweet communion with Him, through Christ alone.
