Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Present afflictions, when borne with patience and faith, work for the comfort and salvation of many. Do not count the loss of those months as mere suffering; God can use your endurance for the good of your son and even for her. Whether we be afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation, and our hope for you is steadfast. Be a partaker of Christ's sufferings, so that you may also partake of His comfort, for the sufferings of Christ abound in us and overflow to others.
Yet take heed: no one is saved by another's virtue alone. The hope of salvation rests in each person's own repentance after the lovingkindness of God. She must turn for herself, and you cannot force that, but you can wash away your own stains by continual repentance, tears, prayers, and works of mercy. Forgive her as you have been forgiven, and let no root of bitterness defile you.
True repentance is not mere weeping or terror but a complete change of mind about sin and a turning to God. Even Esau sought a place of repentance with tears and found none, because his sorrow was not godly. Godly sorrow works repentance unto salvation, a repentance that brings no regret. Worldly sorrow over lost things, lost time, lost comfort, that leads to death. So mourn not for the months gone by as one without hope; rather, let this drive you to deeper prayer and a contrite heart, for God has marked out innumerable ways of salvation for the humble.
She who seems secure now in false security must be awakened. Do not think repentance impossible for her. God takes away not repentance but the second washing; there is no second cross, no new sacrifice. Christ's one offering has perfected forever those who are sanctified. But the renewing unto repentance through tears and confession remains open while breath remains. Now is the acceptable time, now is the day of salvation. He is patient, not willing any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Continue to love her, speak tenderly to her heart, and do not grow weary in fasting and prayer. Entrust the outcome to God's will, saying, "Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done." If she turns, it will be for her salvation and for the raising of your son in the training and instruction of the Lord. If not, your own steadfastness and godly example will be a witness.
Therefore, resist the devil, and he will flee. Cling to the still, small voice that speaks in Scripture and in the quietness of prayer, not always in earthquakes. For your desire that your son knows the Holy Scriptures from infancy is a holy one; do not let the enemy steal your peace. God's mercy is your ground, and His mercy is her only hope. Let your prayer be that she may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
