Vengeance is God’s

We hear your heart in this statement, and we want to affirm the truth that vengeance indeed belongs to the Lord. The Scriptures are clear on this matter, as it is written in Romans 12:19, "Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.'" This is a powerful reminder that we are not to take justice into our own hands but to trust in God’s perfect and righteous judgment.

However, we must also consider what it means to "leave it to God." Does this mean we do nothing in the face of injustice? No, for we are called to be salt and light in this world (Matthew 5:13-16). We are to stand for truth, speak out against wrongdoing, and seek justice in ways that align with God’s Word. For example, if someone has wronged you, it may be appropriate to address the matter with them in love and truth, as Jesus instructs in Matthew 18:15-17. If the offense is against the law, we may need to involve authorities, for God has established governing bodies for the purpose of justice (Romans 13:1-4).

But let us be clear: leaving vengeance to God does not mean passivity. It means we do not take matters into our own hands with bitterness, anger, or a desire to harm. Instead, we trust that God sees all and will act in His perfect timing and way. We must also examine our own hearts, are we harboring unforgiveness or resentment? If so, we must release it to God, for He calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging that vengeance belongs to You alone. Lord, we confess any bitterness, anger, or desire for revenge that may linger in our hearts. Cleanse us, O God, and fill us with Your peace and Your love. Help us to trust in Your justice, knowing that You see all and will repay according to Your perfect will. Teach us, Lord, to respond to injustice with wisdom, grace, and a commitment to truth. Give us the strength to forgive those who have wronged us, just as You have forgiven us. May we be instruments of Your peace in this world, shining Your light in the darkness. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these Scriptures as well:
- Proverbs 20:22: "Don’t say, 'I will pay back evil.' Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you."
- 1 Peter 3:9: "Not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing; knowing that to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing."
- Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"

May the Lord give you the grace to walk in His ways and the peace that surpasses all understanding as you trust in Him.

We hear the tension in that question mark, like part of you is confident that leaving vengeance to God is the right choice, but another part is still wrestling with what that really looks like in your heart. That’s a deeply honest place to be, and we’re glad you brought it here.

Choosing not to avenge isn’t weakness; it’s an act of trust. You’re essentially handing a heavy burden over to the only One who can carry it with perfect justice and timing. The head can know that long before the emotions catch up, and that’s okay. You can make the decision to release the matter to God even while anger or hurt still stir inside. Over time, as you keep handing it back and asking Him to tend the wounded places, the feelings often quiet.

When the urge to retaliate or replay the offense rises, you might try whispering a very short prayer: “Jesus, I trust You to handle this. I give You my anger and this person.” Nothing fancy, just a quiet, deliberate letting go, as many times as it takes. It’s not pretending the hurt didn’t happen; it’s freeing yourself from the exhausting role of carrying out a justice that isn’t yours to enforce.

We’re praying with you now:

Lord Jesus, thank You that justice and judgment belong to You. We lift up this struggle, the tension between knowing the truth and feeling the pull of resentment. Quiet the inner storm, and let trust settle deep. Bring healing where there are wounds, and let Your peace stand guard over this heart. In Your name, amen.

You speak of leaving vengeance to God, yet consider well what that Day of Vengeance truly is, lest your heart be found looking upon it with a secret satisfaction that is far from the mind of Christ. The terrible day of the Lord’s vengeance fell upon our blessed Surety, when the sword awoke against the Man who is God’s fellow, and all the transgressions of His people met upon His head. If you have fled to Him for refuge, then for you vengeance has been spent and exhausted at Golgotha. There is now no condemnatory wrath for those who are in Jesus, and to lust after another’s ruin is to forget the pit from which you yourself were digged.

It is not enough to forbear your own hand while your spirit nurses the hope of divine retaliation. He who has forgiven you for Christ’s sake commands you to forgive your brother from the heart. Look again at Calvary: there vengeance and mercy kissed; the Just died for the unjust that He might bring us to God. If you have tasted that forgiveness, let the sweetness of it melt away every hard thought. Go not forth with a sense of grim satisfaction that the Almighty will settle your accounts, but rather with the tender pity that prays for the offender’s repentance.

There is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared, and that fear teaches us to walk softly in compassion. Set not Jesus at nothing by an unrelenting temper, for if you have been freely released from your debt, will you take your fellow-servant by the throat? The Lord’s release must govern your dealings with all men. Leave the throne of vengeance to Him who alone sits there in perfect holiness, and busy yourself rather with the errand of mercy, proclaiming that there is forgiveness for the chief of sinners.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You speak of leaving vengeance to God, but consider whether you truly leave it. To say "I never avenge" can itself be a judgment, a way of condemning another in your heart while appearing righteous. Remember that God's long-suffering is not a license for us to store up grievances. His patience is meant to lead you to freedom from sin, not to a quiet pride that secretly tallies wrongs. If you misuse this, you only heap up a stricter account for yourself.

For you will be condemned by your own words. The Pharisee spoke truth about his deeds, yet he was condemned because he judged another. When you claim you leave vengeance to God, are you not still setting yourself up as the one wronged, the one worthy of vindication? That posture itself invites a measure you cannot bear. You give yourself over to extreme vengeance by the very act of withholding mercy in your spirit, even if you take no action.

Do not demand to know how God's justice works, as if He must conform to your reasoning. Strict justice would have consumed us all long ago. The secret things belong to Him. What He requires of you is a heart so free from resentment that you can pray for those who harm you, leaving no room for any imagined debt. When His judgment comes, it will be perfect and complete, a victory that needs no help from your memory of offenses. Until then, your task is not to declare your stance on vengeance, but to cultivate such mercy that you are found safe from judgment yourself.
