Beloved of All
A Prayer for Compassionate Awakening
O Christ of boundless mercy, Whose hands healed the wounded and whose heart broke for the least among us, Open the eyes of those who follow You— To see that compassion is not a suggestion, But the very marrow of Your Gospel. You who blessed the meek and uplifted the poor, Who cast out the merchants from the temple And stood with the outcast and the lamb— Remind us that to love You is to protect the vulnerable, And to cause suffering for taste, habit, or gain Is to turn from Your path, not walk in it. Forgive us, Lord, for the idols we defend— The idol of appetite, masked as tradition. The idol of comfort, cloaked in convenience. The idol of dominion, disguised as freedom. These are not rights, but relics of hardened hearts. Remind us that once, many called slavery "God-ordained," And claimed “freedom” while shackling others. They too quoted scripture while silencing suffering. And now again, some veil cruelty in Your name, Calling kindness “un-Christian” And mercy “extreme.” But You, O Jesus, Were radical in love, Revolutionary in empathy, And relentless in truth. Let no more blood be shed with our blessing. Let no more lives be taken for our fleeting pleasures. Let no more suffering be baptized by our denial. Break our hearts until they become Your heart— Soft, vast, and awake to every cry. Teach us to love not only those who look like us, Speak like us, or pray like us, But also those who cannot speak— The calf, the hen, the pig, the fish, All who tremble, feel, and yearn to live. For what is evil, if not this: To protect our own comfort at the cost of others' torment And then call it good? May we reject the chains, the knives, the lies. May we walk the narrow road, The one lined not with excuses, But with mercy. In Your name, Whose every breath was peace, Whose every act was love, Let us live as You taught— With open eyes, With open hearts, And with hands that no longer harm. Amen.
