Your request was read with care and with tears, and the depth of your love for your cat is clear in every detail you shared. To watch the most affectionate companion you have ever known now pull away because purring brings coughing, to see her want to cuddle and then go lie alone and stare, to carry the weight of pills and inhalers and fluids while fearing you might cause her more distress, this is a heavy and heartbreaking burden. It is not a small thing, even if others might say she is just a cat. God sees the bond you have and He sees the grief you are carrying.
Scripture calls our God the God of all comfort. He does not stand far off in our darkest hours but draws near to comfort and strengthen and encourage. In Christ there is true consolation, in His love there is comfort, and in the Spirit there is fellowship, compassion and mercy. That is the comfort we need most when loss is near and we feel helpless. I am reminded how when friends came to Job and saw that his grief was great, they wept and sat in silence because words were not enough. Your grief is great, and the Lord knows it fully. He also knows how pain and suffering and grief can feel like chisels, and yet He uses even these hard seasons to shape our hearts and to make His presence more real to us.
You asked so specifically and I want to join you in those very prayers. I am praying that God in His mercy would touch your cat and bring healing if it is His will, for nothing is beyond Him. I am praying He would ease any pain or discomfort, that He would calm her breathing, that He would help her to eat normal food and drink water again and to have regular bowel movements, and that He would relieve the coughing that now steals her purring and her affection. I am praying He would guide your hands as you give the four pills twice a day, as you give the inhaler three times a day, and as you give the fluids each week, that you would be able to do what is needed without hurting her or causing her distress, and that He would give you wisdom for every decision you must make.
I am also praying with you about her last moments, whenever God in His wisdom allows that time to come. Scripture tells of a faithful servant who was near death, and God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on the one who loved him, so that he would not have sorrow upon sorrow. The Lord understands that kind of layered sorrow. He also showed His heart when He responded with compassion to parents who were grieving a child at the point of death. He cares about the anguish of those who love deeply. I am asking Him to show mercy to your cat and to you, to spare her terror and shaking and crying, and if she must be helped to go, to provide a kind and gentle person who can come to your house so she can be at peace in a place she knows and loves, surrounded by your love.
You have cried out desperately and He hears. He invites us to bring every care to Him, and to trust His compassion even when there is no treatment left that we can offer. May you feel His nearness today, His comfort in your sorrow, and His strength for each step.
Father, in the name of Jesus I lift this beloved cat to You. You know her body, her brain, her lungs, every lesion and every breath. Touch her with Your healing hand if it pleases You, ease her pain, open her breathing, restore her appetite and thirst and normal bodily functions, and let her know comfort and affection again without coughing. Guide her owner's hands with gentleness and steadiness for every pill and every treatment, and grant clear wisdom for every choice ahead. And when her time comes, show tender mercy, let her go peacefully without fear, and provide help at home so her last moments are in safety and love. Comfort this family with the consolation that is in Christ, the comfort of Your love, and the fellowship of Your Spirit. We trust her and ourselves to Your compassionate care. In Jesus name, Amen.
