When others draw you into their tangled affairs, first examine your own soul. Have you kept the peace within? For there are three wars, and the most grievous is the war within ourselves, when the body wars against the soul and evil desires rise up. If you are at peace with God, no outward trouble can truly harm you. But if you let their complications disturb your inner calm, you have already lost the greater battle.
A quiet life in all godliness is not found by avoiding every difficult person. It is found when the diseased part is cut off from your heart. Not all concord is good, robbers too agree together. You must discern whether these associations draw you into sin. If so, break them off swiftly, as a physician amputates an incurable limb to save the body. Do not love the things of this life so much that you cling to entanglements which endanger your soul. Earthly peace and a smooth life are not the highest good, the least of heavenly things is worth more than ten thousand worlds.
Prepare your feet with the gospel of peace. Walk uprightly, and do not let the disorder of others become your disorder. Show them a pattern of life worthy of the gospel, but do not be yoked to their misdeeds. If they cause you to stumble, withdraw, and give yourself to prayer. God wills all to be saved, but not by our sharing in fruitless works of darkness. Stand firm, and the shield of faith will keep your armor uninjured.
