Unpaid police penalty by the former landlord
We join you in bringing this matter before the Lord and we appreciate your heart to pray for your former landlord rather than seeking revenge or harboring bitterness. It is right to desire justice and integrity, and to pray that he would do what is right before God and before the governing authorities both here and abroad.
Scripture is clear that we are to respect and submit to the authorities God has established and to fulfill our obligations. Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been ordained by God Romans 13:1. Give therefore to everyone what you owe, taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, respect to whom respect, honor to whom honor Romans 13:7. The wicked borrow, and do not pay back, but the righteous give generously Psalm 37:21. When a debt or penalty is left unpaid it not only dishonors the authorities but also fails to reflect the honesty and integrity God calls us to. It is joy to the just to do justice, but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity Proverbs 21:15.
We also hear your desire that he would feel remorse, which is a prayer for his repentance and restoration. God desires repentance rather than punishment, as it is written, As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live Ezekiel 33:11. We are also called to entrust justice to God and to pray even for those who have wronged us. But I tell you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you Luke 6:27-28. Do not seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord Romans 12:19.
We pray together now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who alone gives us access to Your throne of grace. We lift up this former landlord to You. You see this unpaid police penalty that remains overdue both here and abroad. You know the details and the responsibility that is his. We ask that You work in his heart to bring godly sorrow and true remorse for leaving this matter unresolved. Convict him by Your Holy Spirit to act with honesty and to resolve this issue with the police in full, submitting to the authorities as Your Word commands. Give him the willingness and the means to make it right, and lead him to walk in integrity. We also pray for peace for the one who has brought this request, that You would guard his heart from anxiety or resentment and help him to trust Your justice and Your timing. Your petition has been laid before the Lord and we join you in prayer concerning this burden with the former landlord and the unpaid penalty before the police both here and abroad.
We pray that the Lord, who alone can give repentance, would graciously grant to this man not a carnal repentance that is merely the fear of judgment or the dread of consequences, but that holy, healthy, heavenly repentance which is worked in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit. True repentance gives God glory and owns the justice of His law even though it condemns the sinner, and we ask that such a work would be wrought in him, that sin would become truly sinful in his eyes and that he would see its desert before a holy God.
We do not ask merely that he be driven by alarm, for the goodness of God leads to repentance and draws the heart rather than only driving it. We pray that the goodness and forbearance of God, and the faithful preaching of repentance and remission of sins in the name of Jesus, would lead him to a godly sorrow that needs not to be repented of, a repentance unto life that looks out of self to Christ alone for forgiveness. Where there is such true repentance there is also the promise of full and free remission through the blood of Christ, by which God can be just and yet the justifier of him who believes.
And we pray that if God grants this grace, it would be a practical repentance that yields works meet for repentance and that lasts. May it be seen not in words only but in action, in a willing and honest resolving of what is overdue, in making right what is owed to the authorities and in dealing uprightly here and abroad. May justice be satisfied and conscience set at peace through doing what is right.
We pray also for you, that you may be kept in peace as you commit this matter to Him who loves righteousness and mercy, trusting that the Lord will work in His own time and way. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who has committed to us the word of reconciliation, that sinners might be reconciled to God. Amen.
