Toxic work environment

Disciple of Prayer
My boss has been incredibly tough on me. Even though I am trying my best and working after office hours and weekends to finish tasks, I am told that I am no value add and that my performance rating would be poor. Please please pray for me to get through this and found a great job with great colleagues and boss. I am struggling so much. I come to work with so much anxiety and stress everyday. I cry everyday. I am so scared

We hear the weight and pain in your words and we are carrying your burden with you before the Lord. To go to work every day with anxiety and stress, to cry every day and feel scared and told you are of no value, is deeply distressing, and we weep with you and pray for you. Know that your value is not determined by a boss or a performance rating. You are fearfully and wonderfully made and precious in God's sight, and He sees your diligence, your tears, and your honest effort when you have been working beyond office hours and weekends to do your best.

The Lord invites you to bring this anxiety to Him. We are reminded in Philippians 4:6-7 not to be anxious in anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, to let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Also 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for you. And Isaiah 41:10 promises, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. When your heart is overwhelmed as it is now, Psalm 61:2 reminds us to cry to Him, When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. And Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

We also want to gently share something important with you because your request did not mention the name of Jesus. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord, for Romans 10:9 says if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name we pray and find peace and hope even in a toxic workplace.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the toxic environment, the harsh words from the boss, the fear of a poor rating, the exhaustion from working after hours and weekends, and the daily tears and anxiety. Lord, we ask You to surround this child of Yours with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and to guard the heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Comfort the fear and wipe away the tears, and remind this precious soul of true value in You. We ask for Your wisdom and strength to endure this season, for favor and justice at work, and if it is Your will, open the door to a great new job with kind and encouraging colleagues and a boss who leads with fairness and grace. We pray for the boss as well, that You would soften that heart and bring conviction to lead with kindness, for Colossians 4:1 says masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. Help our friend to work heartily as for You and not for men, as Colossians 3:23-24 teaches, while also finding rest in You, for You invite the weary in Matthew 11:28 to come to You, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Lead to provision, to daily bread, to hope for the future, for we trust Romans 8:28 that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, Amen.

We encourage you to keep committing your work to the Lord as Proverbs 16:3 says, Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed. Continue to do your best as unto the Lord, but also remember that God ordained rest and does not ask you to destroy your health to prove your worth to man. Seek wise and godly counsel, perhaps a trusted pastor, counselor, or mentor, and if needed, wise guidance at your workplace, and set healthy boundaries where you can while trusting God to be your defender and provider. Guard time for prayer, for sleep, for Sabbath rest, and let Him renew your strength. We are praying that whether God restores peace where you are or leads you to a new place of work where you are valued and supported, you will see His hand and know that He has not forgotten you and that He will carry you through this.

We read your note and our hearts go out to you. Coming to work every day with dread, staying late and giving up weekends and still being told you add no value would wear anyone down. It makes sense you feel anxious, exhausted and scared, and we are so sorry you are carrying this and crying every day.

Please hear that one tough boss and one harsh rating do not define your worth or your future. God sees both how hard you are trying and how heavy this has become.

You should not have to carry this alone. Is there someone safe outside of work you could talk with soon, a trusted pastor, mentor, or counselor, who can listen and help you think through options? When anxiety and daily tears and stress continue like this, it is also wise to reach out to your doctor or a counselor for support alongside prayer, so you have care for your health while you navigate work.

For the job hope you mentioned, you don't have to solve everything at once. Taking one small, steady step at a time can help it feel less overwhelming, like quietly updating your resume or noting what a healthier team and manager would look like for you. Keeping a simple private record of your hours and completed tasks can also give you clarity if you need to speak with a mentor or HR.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus' name. You know the fear and pressure they feel each day. Give them Your peace and rest, wisdom for each conversation and decision, and kind, wise people to walk beside them. Lead them to the right next place You have for them and sustain them until then. Amen.

Your letter has been read with deep tenderness of heart, and your tears and trembling have been laid before the Lord with earnest prayer.

You write that you come to your work each day with anxiety and stress, that you labour even after hours and on weekends and yet are told you add no value, and that you cry daily under a great fear of what shall come. This is a heavy trial, and it is no light thing to bear the frown of those set over you when your conscience tells you that you have done your best. The inquiry of fear rises very naturally in such a place, Will He plead against me with His great power, will even God be against me in this trouble.

Hear then the answer of faith which Job was taught, No, but He will put strength in me. That very power which you fear is now your refuge and your hope, for the Almighty delights to lend His omnipotence to the weak and weary. When you feel you have no strength left to stand before the demands of man, the Lord Himself will put strength into you to endure, to do what is right, and to wait upon His deliverance.

You must know that the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. Fear is weakening, and the fear of man bringeth a snare. Therefore labour to get rid of fear as much as possible, not by hardening your heart, but by casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you. Tell not your anxiety only to yourself, where it will feed upon your spirit, but tell it unto your Father in heaven. There is a plant which grows very plentifully in God's garden, and its name is Fear not. Fear not, for I am with thee, Fear not, for I will help thee, Fear not, thou worm Jacob, saith the Lord. It is not merely a preacher who says Fear not, but Jesus Himself who whispers to His poor servant fallen as dead at His feet, Fear not.

In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly, and God upheld him when all else was taken away. If He could uphold Job in all that loss and reproach, be assured He can support you. Should trials come even like those which happened to Job, it shall be well with your soul if your heart is kept right with God, not charging Him foolishly, but trusting that He sees your labour, your integrity, and your tears.

We have prayed for you, and will continue to pray, that the Lord will give you peace in the midst of this storm, that He will guard your heart from despair and your mind from tormenting fear, that He will give you wisdom and favour to do your work faithfully unto Him rather than unto men, and that in His own time and wisdom He will open a door to a better provision, a place of honest labour with kind colleagues and a just master, if it be for your good and His glory. We have asked also that He would soften the heart of the one set over you, or restrain unkindness, and that He would let your true diligence be seen.

Take this word for your daily bread, Fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God, I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee. Trust in promised strength, and let that promise chase away fear. He who numbers your tears will not leave you to sink. Though He may try you, yet will He help you, and in due season you shall find that His grace was sufficient for you.
