Tormenting spirits

We hear your cry for deliverance from tormenting spirits that seek to disrupt your peace, focus, and well-being. The Word of God is clear: the enemy comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but Christ has come that we may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). These spirits have no authority over you if you are in Christ, for He has already disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in the cross (Colossians 2:15). You are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12), and the weapons of your warfare are not of the flesh but are mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).

First, we must address the foundation of your faith. Have you placed your trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? It is only through His name that we have access to the Father and the power to resist the enemy. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have already done this, we rejoice with you and stand with you in the authority Christ has given you.

Now, let us rebuke these tormenting spirits in the name of Jesus. We command every spirit of fear, anxiety, confusion, and oppression to leave you now. You have no place in this child of God, for greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). We break every assignment of the enemy against your mind and body, and we declare that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and your thoughts in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). We plead the blood of Jesus over your mind, your emotions, and your physical body, and we declare that no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

We also encourage you to put on the full armor of God daily so that you may stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). Fasten the belt of truth around your waist, put on the breastplate of righteousness, shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, take up the shield of faith to extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one, take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:14-17). Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication, and stay alert with all perseverance (Ephesians 6:18).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. We thank You for the authority You have given us over all the power of the enemy. We stand on Your promise that nothing shall by any means harm us (Luke 10:19). Lord, we lift up this dear one who is being tormented by spirits that seek to steal their peace and focus. We rebuke every lying spirit, every spirit of fear, anxiety, and confusion, and we command them to leave in the name of Jesus. We break every chain and assignment of the enemy against their mind and body.

Father, we ask that You fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in the peace and freedom that Christ has purchased for them. Guard their heart and mind with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding. Help them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5) and to meditate on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8). Strengthen them to resist the devil, and remind them that he will flee from them (James 4:7).

Lord, we also ask that You surround them with Your angels to protect and minister to them. Let Your presence be a shield around them, and let Your light dispel every darkness. Help them to stand firm in their faith, knowing that You are with them and will never leave them nor forsake them (Hebrews 13:5). Renew their mind with Your Word, and let the truth set them free (John 8:32).

We declare that this one is more than a conqueror through Him who loved them (Romans 8:37), and that no weapon formed against them shall prosper. We thank You, Father, for Your deliverance and for the victory that is already theirs in Christ Jesus. In His precious and powerful name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to stand firm in your faith and to continually fill your mind with the Word of God. Memorize scriptures that speak to your situation and declare them over your life daily. Surround yourself with believers who can pray with you and encourage you in your walk with Christ. Remember, the enemy is already defeated, and you have the victory in Jesus. Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9). Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and He will lead you into all truth and freedom.

We hear the distress in your request, and we’re standing with you in prayer right now. When tormenting thoughts press in and focus feels impossible, it’s exhausting, and you’re not weak for feeling that way. Spiritual resistance often intensifies when we try to turn our attention toward what is good or toward God, because the enemy wants to keep us scattered and overwhelmed. The reality of this battle doesn’t mean you’re losing; it often means you’re contending for something important.

One simple, concrete thing that has helped many believers in moments like this is to speak the name of Jesus aloud, even quietly. Not as a formula, but as a deliberate act of faith that his authority is greater than whatever is troubling your mind. When the noise escalates, pause and say, “Jesus, I belong to you. Cover my mind.” You don’t need a long, eloquent prayer, just a steady, repeated declaration of his presence and power.

Also, if you have a trusted Christian friend or pastor, consider asking them to pray with you, even briefly over the phone. There is a special strengthening that comes when someone else agrees with you in prayer and helps carry the burden. You weren’t meant to face this alone.

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, we ask you to surround our friend right now with your peace that surpasses understanding. Silence every tormenting whisper and shield their mind and body from any spirit that is not from you. Grant them the clarity to focus on what they need to do, and the deep rest of knowing you are their defender. In your mighty name we pray, amen.

Tormenting spirits! The battlefield lies within that very frame which clothes your living soul. It is a strange thing, the greatest paradox, a regenerate man still in a body which remains under corruption. In that body there dwells no good thing, nothing but what is evil, and what should we expect but that these foul intruders would plague us? They come like a frost from the north, chilling the soul, yet they can only move as the Lord wills. When the Spirit, like a rushing mighty wind, fills the house of your being, these adversaries flee. The same oil that bedewed the Head bedews the skirts of the garment; cry out for that unction. The blood is sent even to the extremities of the body by the heart's pulsings, and the Spirit of God operates upon every power and faculty. Let the living, thinking mind hide itself in the wounds of Christ, and the tormentors must retreat.

Yet mark this fire that searches and torments, it is owned by the Lord. It burns to purify, to discover the wickedness of our nature. The Spirit lights a candle within to show us things as they really are, so that we put not darkness for light. You groan, being burdened; so do all who are in this tabernacle, waiting for the deliverance of the body. But hear this: before the clouds closed, I saw it. Two spirits rising, one whispering, “You shall be with Me in Paradise,” the other, “Nevertheless I am continually with You.” Even now, while the dust of the body clings to you, you are caught up in that mystic and everlasting union. The enemies may imprison the mind for a season, but you are no longer under the law of their bondage. Christ has come under it for you. Let praise fill up your day, for you are delivered from this present evil world and the very members that seem a cage will one day be a temple perfected, not destroyed.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You speak of tormenting spirits, and I hear the cry of a soul that longs for peace. But ask yourself this: what have you allowed to take root within that gives these enemies a foothold? The devil cannot force the will; he can only tempt. If your mind is scattered and your body feels assailed, first examine your own watchfulness. Do you feast the flesh with luxury and idleness, and then wonder why it rises up against you? That is not the body’s fault, it is an instrument, good in itself, but the slothful will that abuses it. When you fill it with excess and soften it with ease, you nurse an invalid, not a soldier. A body weakened by self-indulgence becomes a harbor for low spirits and every dark thought. So mortify it, not by destruction, but by discipline. Let voluntary hardship and self-control burn away the chaff, and you will find strength returning.

Yet do not fix your gaze only on the physical, for the battle is in the mind. The Apostle calls it “the flesh lusting against the Spirit,” but he means the earthly mind, the depraved will, not the body itself. Those tormenting whispers, they find their power when your inner choice inclines toward them. So renew the spirit of your mind. That is not a small thing uttered in passing: “In the spirit of your mind,” meaning let the Holy Spirit remake the very way you think. A mind set on things above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God, cannot be dragged downward for long. When you brood on grievances, entertain impure images, or give yourself to disordered anxieties, you open the gate. Shut it by filling your mind with prayer, especially that prayer the Lord taught: “Deliver us from the evil one.” For His is the kingdom and the power and the glory, what demon can stand against that name?

And consider what is given you at this very altar. The Body and Blood of Christ, the same Body adored by angels, the very medicine of immortality, do you approach it carelessly? When you partake with faith and a clean conscience, you become one with Him who has trampled down every spiritual foe. No enemy can endure the presence of that indwelling Fire. So run to the Mysteries often, with fear and trembling, and you will taste not only healing but a fortress around your soul.

Do not imagine that your struggle is unique or that you are abandoned. The enemy attacks precisely because he sees you striving toward focus and prayer. But he is a chained hound, able to bark but not to bite those who stay close to the Master. Stand firm, make the sign of the Cross upon your forehead and your heart, and say, “I am marked for Christ; what have I to do with you, spirits of wickedness?” Let the will be firm, and the passions will become fuel for the fire of the Spirit rather than kindling for the enemy. This path of self-denial is a living martyrdom, and the crown awaits those who persevere.
