The nations will be judged for how they have treated that ancient people. That coming judgment shows both His justice and His mercy, for even ruthless powers are not beyond His reach, and His purpose is to bring them to reverence rather than only to destruction.
This also reveals the faithfulness of God. He has promised to again work directly with the nation of Israel, not because that people have earned it, but for His holy name's sake which has been profaned among the nations. For a time He has set aside Israel as a nation in terms of special favor, so that Jew and Gentile now stand on the same ground and both must come by faith, yet He has not cast them away forever. As Paul explains, blindness has come upon Israel in part for a season, but the natural branches can be grafted in again. God is the potter and we are the clay, and in His sovereignty He chooses and calls according to His purpose, not according to our resolve or works. Not all who are descended from Israel belong to the true spiritual Israel, which is those who are children of Abraham by faith. There remains a faithful remnant whom the Lord will call, and in that day He has promised to pour out His Spirit upon the house of Israel and bring a great spiritual revival, so that those who were once told you are not My people will be called My people.
There is a distinction God keeps between His program for Israel and His work in the church, which is the bride of Christ. We who have trusted Christ have a blessed place in Him, waiting for the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. We do not need to envy what God has promised to Israel, but we can rejoice in His faithfulness to keep every promise He has made to them, for that same faithfulness secures His promises to us.
For you today this verse is meant to give steady hope. The strong powers that seem to dominate history and defy God are not outside His authority for a moment. He is sovereign over all history and over every nation. That should lead us to be still and know that He is God, that He will be exalted among the nations and in all the earth. It should also move us to share the gospel with confidence, knowing His plan has always included all peoples, as promised to Abraham that through his offspring all nations would be blessed, and as Jesus commanded to go and make disciples of all nations. Even those who seem farthest and most hardened can be drawn to Him when He is lifted up.
As you yield your life to Him, may you discover more of His blessed plan for you and abound in every spiritual gift in Christ. May you rest in the certainty that His justice will prevail, His mercy is extended even to the rebellious, and His Word, the living Bread from heaven, will not fail until every strong people honors Him and every ruthless city reveres Him.
