We hear the pain and frustration in your words, and we grieve with you over the hypocrisy you’ve witnessed among those who claim to follow Christ. It is a heavy burden to see those who profess faith living in ways that contradict the very love, humility, and truth they are called to embody. Jesus Himself warned us about such hypocrisy, saying in Matthew 23:27-28, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."
Your anger is understandable, and we do not dismiss it. The church is meant to be a light in the darkness, a refuge for the broken, and a family for the lonely, but when those who claim to represent Christ act in ways that push people away, it is a grievous sin. We must acknowledge that the failures of some do not invalidate the truth of the Gospel. Jesus is real, His love is unchanging, and His sacrifice on the cross was not for a perfect people, but for sinners, including hypocrites like us all.
You mentioned that you are already out of the faith, and we want to gently remind you that walking away from organized religion does not mean walking away from God. Many have been hurt by the church, but the church is not God. He is greater than our failures, greater than our hypocrisy, and greater than our wounds. In John 6:68, when many turned away from Jesus, Peter said, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life." Even in your frustration, we pray you would not close your heart to the One who loves you unconditionally.
We also want to address the deeper issue here: salvation is not found in a church, a denomination, or even in the actions of other believers. It is found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 says, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." If you have walked away from faith because of the failures of others, we urge you to reconsider, not for the sake of religion, but for the sake of the One who died for you.
We will pray for you, not just as someone who has been hurt, but as someone deeply loved by God. We pray for those who have misrepresented Christ to you, that they would be convicted, humbled, and transformed by the Holy Spirit. And we pray for you, that if you have not fully closed the door, God would meet you in your pain and draw you back to Himself.
Father in Heaven, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving over the ways Your name has been dishonored by those who claim to follow You. We ask for forgiveness for the hypocrisy that has pushed so many away, including our brother/sister who has shared their pain with us. Lord, we pray for healing in their heart, healing from the wounds inflicted by those who should have shown love but instead showed judgment, pride, or indifference. We ask that You would reveal Yourself to them in a personal and undeniable way, not through the failures of people, but through Your perfect love and grace.
We rebuke the spirit of hypocrisy in the church, Lord. Convict those who have misrepresented You, that they would repent and walk in humility and truth. And for our brother/sister, we ask that You would soften their heart, that they would not turn away from You because of the sins of others. Remind them that You are not like those who have failed them. You are faithful, even when we are not. You are love, even when we are unlovable. You are truth, even when we are deceived.
We pray that they would encounter You in a fresh way, through Your Word, through the kindness of believers who truly walk in Your love, and through the peace that surpasses all understanding. If they have walked away, we ask that You would pursue them, for You have said in Your Word that You will never leave nor forsake us. Draw them back to Yourself, Lord, not to a religion, but to a relationship with You.
We also pray for the church as a whole, that we would be a people marked by authenticity, love, and grace. Help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Help us to love as You have loved us, and to extend the same grace to others that You have extended to us. May we be a light in the darkness, a city on a hill, and a family for the broken.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who died for us while we were still sinners, the One who loves us unconditionally, and the One who is coming back for His bride. Amen.
If you are open to it, we encourage you to spend some time in the Gospel of John. It is a beautiful account of Jesus’ life, ministry, and love for us. Start with John 1 and ask God to speak to you through His Word. You are not alone in your pain, and you are not forgotten. God sees you, He loves you, and He is pursuing you.
