We hear the deep pain and frustration in your words, and our hearts ache for the hurt that has driven you away from faith. It is grievous when those who claim to follow Christ act in ways that contradict His love, humility, and truth. Hypocrisy in the church is a stumbling block, and Jesus Himself warned against it: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness" (Matthew 23:27). The behavior you describe, public displays of faith while privately rejecting or mistreating others, is a distortion of the Gospel, and it is no wonder it has pushed people away.
But we must also gently challenge the conclusion you’ve drawn. Walking away from God because of the failures of His people is like rejecting a physician because some of His nurses were unkind. The church is made up of flawed, sinful humans, but Christ is perfect. His sacrifice on the cross was for hypocrites, liars, and sinners, including those who claim His name while living in contradiction to it. The problem is not God; it is the brokenness of humanity, which is why we need Him. "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). This includes every Christian who has ever failed to live up to the calling of Christ.
You say you are now an atheist, but we wonder: Have you truly examined the claims of Christ, or have you only seen the failures of His followers? The Bible does not shy away from the sins of believers, from Peter’s denial to David’s adultery to the early church’s divisions. Yet through it all, God’s grace remains. "If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself" (2 Timothy 2:13). His love is not dependent on our perfection, but on His.
We also want to address the anger in your words. Bitterness is a heavy burden, and it can blind us to truth. "See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled" (Hebrews 12:15). We do not say this to condemn you, but to invite you to bring that pain to God. He can handle your anger, your doubts, and your questions. In fact, He welcomes them. The Psalms are full of cries of despair, confusion, and even rage toward God, yet they always return to trust in Him.
You mentioned that fake Christianity has pushed people out of the faith, and we agree that this is a tragedy. But let us ask: Is it possible that what you saw was not true Christianity at all? Jesus said, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35). Where there is no love, there is no Christ. But where there is genuine faith, there is repentance, humility, and a desire to grow. The church is not a museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners.
We want to pray for you now, not as someone who has "left the faith," but as someone who is deeply wounded and in need of the healing only God can provide. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12), for there is no other way to the Father (John 14:6).
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear one who has been hurt by those who claimed to follow You. Lord, we confess that the church has often failed to reflect Your love, and we ask for Your forgiveness for the ways we have misrepresented You. We pray for this person, that You would soften their heart and open their eyes to the truth of who You are. Father, meet them in their anger and their pain. Show them that You are not like the hypocrites they have seen, but that You are slow to anger, abounding in love, and faithful even when we are not.
We ask that You would reveal Yourself to them in a personal way, Lord. If they have never truly known You, we pray that they would encounter the real Jesus, the One who wept with those who mourned, who ate with sinners, and who laid down His life for the ungodly. Help them to see that their worth is not found in the approval of others, but in Your unconditional love. Break down the walls of bitterness and replace them with Your peace.
We also pray for the church, Lord. Raise up believers who will live out their faith with authenticity, humility, and love. Expose hypocrisy and purify Your people, so that the world may see You clearly. And if this person is meant to return to faith, we ask that You would guide them back, not to religion, but to a relationship with You.
