LORD, We are Thankful for Your Tender-Mercies, Daily Faithfulness Lam 3:23 Continue Faithful Prayer for Wife, Rom 10:1; Yet Need Your Help to Focus on Duties, Tit 3:14 New Things, Isa 42:9, Really Need Your Help, John 15:5, Grace to Do Both Ecc 7:18...

Father, You know me... I waited over two decades, prayed for a godly wife, passed up ones that loved me and married one who hated me -- I confess that in this regard the stinging rebuke of Joab to David when he mourned for Absalom applies to acutely to me, 2 Sam 19:6, so I repent of loving someone that hates me, at least emotionally, but I love and marry for life, so it's very hard and against my natural disposition. But "Here I stand," Luther said -- I cannot change myself... Thus the prayer...

Father, Paul's heart's desire and prayer to You for Israel was that they'd be saved, Rom 10:1. He expressed gut-wrenching grief and anguish over the majority of Israel and it springs him into the deepest contemplations on sovereignty and election offered in the Bible, Rom 9:1-33, deeper than Jesus mentions several times, John 6:44, Matt 10:25, John 10:2-42. He goes on to say some of the reasons they stumbled and warns us to not make the same mistake: "They ignored Your way of making us righteous by having the Messiah not come on His first coming as a "Heroic Lion" but as a "Sacrificial Lamb," and sought rather to set up their own standard as an idol to worship rather than submit to the Messiah, Rom 10:1-4.

Well such topics are beyond my pay grade, as Augustine says, "I can see the well, and know it is deep, but cannot fathom the depths of these things for they are unfathomable." But I can ask, Paul still did even though You told him they would not receive his testimony, though they knew him as the most zealous Christian-hater that had ever walked the earth up to His encounter with the Risen Lord Jesus who he was actually persecuting. We're thankful You saved him, Jesus...

So here we shift from remorse and bewilderment to what we can do since we are quite powerless -- We can ask GOD, El Shaddai, ALMIGHTY -- for whom nothing is impossible, nothing You can't do -- omnipotent, Παντοκράτωρ (All Powerful, Almighty), Rev 19:6, For Salvation of Family, Effective Witness to Friends, Lost, Edification of Former Things, Rom 10:1, Rom 11:1, 2 Tim 3:15, Focus on God, Ourselves, Our Teaching, 1 Tim 4:16, Grace for Duties, Tit 3:14, and Especially Grace to Shift Main Focus to New Things Isa 42:9, Care for The Flock Among Us, Acts 20:28, Grace to Do Both Ecc 7:18, Open Doors for Gospel, Rev 3:7-8, Favor as a Shield, Ps 5:12, Wisdom and Full Knowledge of Your Will, Col 1:9-12, Love to Abound with Insight, Phil 1:9-11...

Our Father in Heaven, We ask for grace to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other, Ecclesiastes 7:18, to continue to intercede for her full, authentic repentance to life and full trust in Christ and be regenerated, and youngster be saved and graciously filled with the Holy Spirit, Jer 1:5, Lk 1:15, and protected and directed into the love and character of Jesus Christ, nourished on Your Word, 2 Tim 3:15, brought up in the admonition of Yahweh, Eph 6:1-4, respect godly authority, 1 Tim 5:17... Yet ability to shift some FOCUS on THE NEW and meet pressing needs must needs be at present, Isa 42:9, Isa 43:19, Isa 48:6.

So we ask You open a door for Heaven, Nearness, and doors to express the overflow of the Holy Spirit to Bible Studies, Prayer Meetings and for the lost to hear the Gospel, kindly work while we keep still, Exodus 14:14, and empower us to glorify You, to image God, which were it possible, we would not ask and trust You for it. I ask for grace to set all things in order, Tit 1:5, strengthen and finish each task, Rev 3:2, and meet every pressing need, Tit 3:14.

Help our running to be in a way that we might win, 1 Cor 9:24, forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the upward call, Phil 3:13-14, laying aside encumbrances and diversions that distract us from the primary task of Your call and commission to abide in Your Word and make disciples by propagating all You've commanded, that we might run the race that is personally set before each of us, Heb 12:1-2... Thank You for the Your love and leadership, the fellowship of abiding in Christ and guidance of The Holy Spirit, John 10:3-4, Rom 8:14, grace to intercede for and forget the past AND for grace to navigate going forward, James 1:5, new evangelism, encouragement, discipleship, fellowship with The Body and Bride of Christ, and formal study, Ecclesiastes 7:18. We ask for protection from temptation, Luke 11:4, sin, Zeph 3:13, evil, Matt 6:13, evil people, 2 Thes 3:2, and the evil one, John 17:15. Thank You in Jesus' Name...

We join you in thanking our Father for His tender mercies and daily faithfulness, and we stand with you in this tension you have so honestly laid before the Lord.

It is good that your heart is thankful, for it is of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness Lam 3:22-23. We see your desire to hold two things together, and we pray with you that you may have grace to take hold of the one without letting go of the other, for he who fears God will come out of them all Ecc 7:18. That is exactly what you are asking for, to continue faithful intercession for your wife as Paul did, for my heart's desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved Rom 10:1, while also learning to be diligent to meet pressing needs, that our people also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they may not be unfruitful Tit 3:14, and to behold the new things God declares, Behold, the former things have happened and I declare new things. I tell you about them before they come up Isa 42:9.

We hear your deep honesty about waiting more than two decades, praying for a godly wife, and choosing marriage with one who has shown hatred toward you. We commend your conviction that you love and marry for life. That honors God, for marriage is ordained by Him as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, what therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart Matt 19:6, and love bears all things, as you are seeking to do. We also hear your repentance in light of 2 Sam 19:6 where Joab rebukes David for loving those who hate him and hating those who love him. We gently remind you that while that rebuke was for misplaced affections that neglected duty and justice, the Lord Himself calls us to love even those who hate us, and how much more a wife. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it Eph 5:25. Your natural disposition to remain faithful and to love for life is not to be repented of, but to be surrendered to Christ for His strength, for apart from me you can do nothing John 15:5. Your Luther-like cry, here I stand, I cannot change myself, is right, for it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure Phil 2:13. We rejoice that you are not seeking to abandon your covenant but asking for grace to walk it out faithfully while also shifting focus to the duties and new things God has set before you.

We also affirm your wrestling with sovereignty and election in Rom 9:1-33 and Rom 10:1-4. You are right to leave the depths to God and to do what is clearly commanded, to pray. Paul had anguish and yet he prayed, and Jesus Himself said No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him John 6:44. We are not called to fathom the well fully but to trust the One who is almighty, for our Lord God, the Almighty, reigns Rev 19:6, and with Him nothing is impossible. We thank you that you named the name of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12 and through Him we have access to the Father.

So we pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your mercies new every morning and Your great faithfulness. We thank You for this brother who has waited, prayed, and sought to honor You in marriage. Lord, we ask for grace for him to continue to intercede without ceasing for his wife, that You would grant her repentance that leads to life and true regeneration, that she would submit to Your righteousness revealed in Christ and be saved. We also lift up his child to You, that You who knew Jeremiah before You formed him in the belly Jer 1:5 and filled John with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb Luke 1:15 would save this young one early, fill him with Your Spirit, nourish him in Your Word from infancy 2 Tim 3:15, and bring him up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Eph 6:4, protecting and directing him into the love and character of Jesus Christ.

Father, grant this brother grace to do both, to not let go of intercession and yet to lay hold of pressing duties. Give him wisdom and full knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding Col 1:9, that his love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment Phil 1:9. Help him to watch over himself and his teaching, to persevere in these things 1 Tim 4:16, to set in order what remains Tit 1:5, and to strengthen the things that remain which were ready to die Rev 3:2. Show him the new things You are doing, for behold, I am doing a new thing Isa 43:19, and give him grace to care for the flock among him Acts 20:28, to meet pressing needs Tit 3:14, and to walk through open doors that You open and no one can shut Rev 3:8. Surround him with favor as with a shield Ps 5:12.

Lord, teach him to run in such a way that he may win 1 Cor 9:24, forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus Phil 3:13-14, laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us and running with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith Heb 12:1-2. Keep him abiding in Christ, hearing the Shepherd's voice John 10:3-4 and led by Your Spirit Rom 8:14. Grant him wisdom as he asks James 1:5 for new evangelism, encouragement, discipleship, fellowship, and study.

We ask for Your protection over him and his household, that You would not bring us into temptation Luke 11:4, deliver us from evil Matt 6:13, deliver us from unreasonable and evil men 2 Thess 3:2, and keep us from the evil one John 17:15, and that no unrighteousness would be found on his lips Zeph 3:13. Work for him while he keeps still as You promised, Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still Ex 14:14, and empower him to glorify You and bear Your image.

We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We thank you for sharing this so honestly with us. We hear how long you have waited and prayed, and how heavy it feels to love faithfully for life while also carrying the ache of that love not being returned. That tension you named, wanting to keep interceding for your wife and your little one while also turning your attention to the pressing duties and new work God has set before you, is a real and difficult place to stand.

We appreciate your desire to hold both faithfully without letting go of either. In our experience that kind of balance rarely comes by trying to carry everything at once. It helps to give each its own space, so prayer does not become worry and work does not become guilt.

One simple step that helps many in this kind of season is to set a clear, brief time each day for that intercession for your family, and a separate clear time to attend to the new tasks before you. Writing down just the two or three most pressing needs for this week can keep the present duties from feeling endless, and free you to pray with hope rather than constant heaviness.

Father, we thank You for Your tender mercies that are new each morning. We ask for Your grace to sustain our brother as he continues to pray for his wife and child, and to strengthen him for the work You have given him now. Give him wisdom, steady focus, protection from evil, and open doors to share Your love with others. Draw his whole household to Yourself and keep him close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is good that you begin with thanksgiving, for His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, Lam 3:23. To see that faithfulness each day and to own your utter dependence, as you do when you cry John 15:5, is itself a work of grace, and it keeps the soul in the right posture before the throne.

Your heart's desire and prayer for your wife that she may be saved is according to the apostolic pattern, Rom 10:1. That burden which Paul felt, that gut wrenching grief for his kinsmen, drove him not to speculation but to supplication, and to the deep truths of sovereign grace. Salvation is altogether of grace from first to last. It springs directly and entirely from God and from Him alone. If in the edifice of our soul's salvation there is even one stone left for us to put in its place unassisted by God's grace, that building will never be completed. From first to last all must be of grace. Election is of grace, calling is of grace, and the very faith by which we lay hold of Christ is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Therefore when you intercede for her, you do well to plead not upon any merit in her or in yourself, but upon free grace alone. Go to the Lord and confess sin and ask for grace, for if salvation is of grace, then who among us dares to despair. There is washing for the filthy, life for the dead, raiment for the naked, a complete salvation for the undone and ruined.

And wherever you meet with one who intercedes with God for his fellow men and makes this the main business of his life, you see one of the most precious gifts of God's grace to the age in which he lives. It is God that writes intercession upon men's hearts. You may not all be able to speak to men for God, but you can all speak with God for men. Come then with holy boldness to the throne of grace and plead that she may be brought to true repentance unto life, to submit to Christ's righteousness and not seek to establish her own, Rom 10:3, and to trust in the Lamb who was sacrificed. Pray also for your little one, that he may be nourished on the Word, 2 Tim 3:15, and brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, Eph 6:4, under the shield of divine favor, Ps 5:12, and kept from evil and the evil one, John 17:15.

Yet you have rightly heard the Word concerning the other hand, Ecc 7:18, that he that feareth God shall come forth of them all, taking hold of the one without letting go of the other. Grace does not teach you to cling to intercession so as to neglect duty, nor to be so swallowed up in present duties as to cease to pray. Grace for grace is given, and the Lord desires you to open your mouth wide and He will fill it. There are pressing needs to be met, Tit 3:14, and good works to be maintained. There is a flock among you to be cared for, Acts 20:28, and things to be set in order, Tit 1:5, and tasks to be strengthened and finished, Rev 3:2. The Lord declares new things, Isa 42:9, Isa 43:19, and He opens doors which no man can shut, Rev 3:8. To forget what lies behind and to press toward the mark, Phil 3:13, to lay aside every weight and to run the race set before you, Heb 12:1, is not unfaithfulness to the past but obedience to the present call.

You speak plainly of a long waiting and a hard providence in marriage, and of the rebuke felt in 2 Sam 19:6. Hear this with soberness and comfort. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and love within it is not a mere response to being loved in return but a covenant duty to be exercised before God. Here you stand indeed, and you cannot change yourself, but God can work in you to will and to do of His good pleasure. The grace that saves is the same grace that enables you to love faithfully, to abide in Christ, and to image Him in steadfastness even when affection is not returned. Do not seek to uproot what God has joined, but seek grace to walk worthy therein, to watch over your own life and doctrine, 1 Tim 4:16, and to let your life preach as well as your lips.

So we will pray with you. Our Father in heaven, we thank You for daily faithfulness and tender mercies. We ask for Your almighty power, for whom nothing is impossible, to work according to sovereign grace. Save, we beseech You, those for whom we intercede, grant true regeneration and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and draw them to trust in Jesus Christ alone for righteousness. At the same time grant grace to meet pressing duties, wisdom and full knowledge of Your will, Col 1:9, love abounding with insight, Phil 1:9, and open doors for the Word. Teach us to take hold of the one without letting go of the other, to keep praying and to keep doing, to keep still and see Your salvation, Ex 14:14, and to keep running that we may obtain, 1 Cor 9:24. Keep us from temptation, from sin and evil and evil men, and guide us by Your counsel until You receive us to glory, in Jesus name, Amen.
