Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your request for your father has been heard and we join you in bringing him before the Lord with compassion and hope.
We pray first for his salvation, for there is no other hope for any of us except through Jesus Christ alone. As the Scriptures teach, our confidence must not rest in human relationships or in chance, but in repentance and faith toward God. We ask that God would draw your father to Himself, open his eyes to his need for Christ, and give him a hunger to read the Bible and to know the truth that is found there. That truth is that Christ is the Life and the Light who alone can deliver and preserve us for His kingdom.
We also pray for his life and his struggles. It is painful to see someone caught in repeated harmful relationships and to feel that everything fails. We do not ask God to bless relationships outside of His design, for He has ordained marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and has reserved intimacy and living together as husband and wife for within that covenant. Instead we pray that God would heal your father from the wounds of verbal and physical abuse, deliver him from patterns that harm him, and teach him continence and holiness. We pray that he would turn from what is destructive and be made whole, and if it is God's will for him to be married, that he would one day pursue that holy estate in a way that honors God.
We pray for his daily needs as well, that God would provide for him, give him stability and meaningful work, and lift the discouragement that comes from feeling unlucky. Our lives are not ruled by luck, but are in the hands of a merciful Father who quickens and restores. We ask that your father would come to know God not only as Creator but as Father through faith in Christ, and find peace that endures beyond present afflictions.
We thank God for the Christian friend in his life and pray that the Lord would work through him. May that friend speak the gospel with clarity and love, live in a way that shows the power of a changed life, and have many opportunities to point your father to Christ and to the Scriptures.
We will continue to pray that your father will open the Bible, that the Lord will give him understanding as he reads, and that he will be drawn from vain hopes to a living hope in Christ. May God also strengthen you as you love your father and intercede for him, and help you to keep showing him grace and truth.
Father in heaven, have mercy on this man. Draw him to Your Son Jesus Christ, forgive his sins, give him new life, and lead him into Your Word. Heal what has been broken, deliver him from what is harmful, and set his feet on a steady path. Use his Christian friend to speak Your truth faithfully. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who alone saves. Amen.
